  1. Were able to prevent my HCP from arriving today, 33 after the application was submitted, and 32 days after printing. TN DOS is getting faster, it seems.
  2. As noted elsewhere on TGO, Nashville is a potential location for a future NRA convention, should the proposed convention center be built. Depending on the square footage, the city might be able to compete for SHOT, but I don't know their space requirements. SHOT is such a huge convention that local laws can't really be taken into account - the only cities with enormous venues are Vegas and Orlando (and possibly New Orleans and San Antonio, IIRC). At some point, local laws have to be accepted because of the massive square footage requirements.
  3. GOP's Brown wins Mass. Senate seat in epic upset - Yahoo! News Hear that grinding sound? It's Obamacare, Cap and Trade, and Card Check coming to a screeching halt. Am I happy, you might ask? Yes, even though you would never ask, since these are the intertubes, and grief is the currency of the land. This is a major political development. Teddy's chair will now be occupied by "a racist homophobic teabagging advocate of violence against women", according to our old pal Keith Olbermann. You know the old saying - if you're taking flak, you're over the target. :D:D Schadenfreude, my pals. It is delicious.
  4. Thanks man, I appreciate it. Wasn't thinking, excited and all that. I'll try again.
  5. My immediate apologies for the title of the YouTube embed - I didn't realize it would appear. Please delete it if it's over the line, admins. Patrick
  6. This post has been deleted because I'm an idiot.
  7. I can throw in a Boston Butt or Picnic Shoulder, if enough Mid-TN folks are down.
  8. I'm channeling some Joe Wilson here - YOU LIE!
  9. Nashville didn't kill anything. An activist judge who legislates from the bench killed it. Internecine wars between different parts of the state deflect attention from the real problem. Instead of complaining about cities here in TN, how about someone who knows tells us how to prevent judges like her getting appointed? This is not a city vs rural issue. This is a people vs judiciary issue.
  10. Late to the party, but "1908 Cubbies", I hoist a cold one to your handle. Someday, my brother, someday. Looking at the roster, 2010 ain't someday. I just hope I live long enough to see it, should it ever happen. Maybe they'll throw us a bone and put Santo in the HOF...at this point, I'll take any scraps I can get to make up for the misery. On the plus side, the 'Hawks are first in the west, and the Predators are playing good hockey too.
  11. Response to myself: I failed to mention that the cut that is worth paying extra is the NY strip. The difference in marbling, flavor, and tenderness is dramatic, plus the added fat makes the strip, which is one of the most demanding cuts to cook perfectly, quite a bit more forgiving.
  12. With rib roasts and ribeye, there is no need to buy "Prime" grade, since the cut has so much marbling that the difference is neglible. Filet follows the same rule, albeit for the opposite reason - there is so little fat in any grade that it's not worth paying the premium price. Bluemax - send me your smoked rib roast recipe, please. I've never done one like that before, and would love to try it. I've never smoked anything but poultry and pork.
  13. I was toying with the idea of buying a Scott Brown win on InTrade - shares were at 18 when he was neck and neck in the polls. Brown shares are now at 71, so the return would have been fantastic. I declined to make the trade after looking at the site, because of the ambiguity involved. For our legal types here: Is InTrade gambling, or a futures market? With TN's strict wagering laws, even if it complied with federal laws, would a user be subject to action by the state when they repatriated profits? The closest analog I can think of is online poker, but that only applies if InTrade qualifies as gambling. Money is kept in an account in Ireland until a check is sent to you, or a transfer through NetTeller is initiated. I've heard that those activities attract the interest of the IRS. Thanks for your advice.
  14. Irish (the green kind, not orange...not that there's anything wrong with that, since we all still like Bushmill's) on both sides. Bit of German on my dad's side, bit of English from mom. It has all worked out well so far - my liver is indestructible, I'm musically inclined, and love books. Unfortunately, the tradeoff is a short temper, a shorter <redacted>, and no ability to withstand UV light. Luckily, I have brown hair instead of red, so I was issued a soul at birth, unlike those dirty ginger kids.
  15. On the plus side, Glock threads are now 40% less likely to include caps-lock abuse and redundant exclamation points. Regarding my original post regarding extra safeties and the potential legal implications were they to be added by the factory, I'm not surprised at all that the Glockers could find counter-examples and disprove my argument. I was wrong on some points, but due to the wisdom of TGO members, I now know better. I dig learning, so thanks for all your input.
  16. You can bet your bottom dollar that a frame or slide-mounted safety will never be an option on a Glock. The "Safe Action" design is Gaston's bread and butter, and he would never water it down with another (hence redundant) safety. Doing so would imply that a Glock could be made more "safe", which would be a major marketing no-no. Glock pistols are sold based on price point, ease of use, and safety. To undercut any one of those promises would make their existing models less desireable (sp?), and with their popularity among LEOs, that would be corporate suicide. A frame or slide-mounted safety on a new Glock pistol would allow people all over the US and Europe to demand that Glocks without such a safety device, in the hands of our protectors, be turned in in favor of more "safe" weapons, lest lawsuits follow. Beretta, Smith, and maybe even Springfield then laugh all the way to the bank as police departments and other enforcement agencies migrate to models with more safety features. For disclosure purposes, I don't own a Glock, but I appreciate them as examples of good engineering. They are perfect point and click devices, so long as they fit your hands. They don't fit mine, but I have no ill will towards them.
  17. Amen, brother. He must really love SoCal to wade into the mess of violations and sanctions that are about to fall upon USC. I do feel sorry for all my UT buds - this move will hurt recruiting, which sets a program back for years. In 2013 / 2014, who will be the upperclass leadership? Cead Maile Failte. /doesn't know how to add the accent marks to put the phrase in proper Gaelic
  18. Can you imagine how annoying reading 20 "BANG"s would be? There's a guy down in Miami that suggests using a proton pack. If you're a real urban ninja, you could use two at once, providing you were safe enough to not cross the streams.
  19. OT, but experts are in the thread: I have torn the labrum in my left hip. It will be late Feb. before I can have it scoped. Can you think of any reason why light cardio on an elliptical would be a problem physiologically? I need to find a way to be active, since I won't be able to resume full-on "athletic" activity until June. Key points: 1. I can't do anything where my toes don't point forward, nor where there is twisting and loading of the hip joint, without pain. 2. I can hear myself getting fat and slow, so I need to find a way to move soon. I have yet to find it, so please leave a comment if you have some knowledge.
  20. And the CNN anchoress just can't process the idea of it. In fact, she seems pretty well horrified through the entire interview. The dealership owner holds his own despite the obvious discomfort and bias of the reporter.. Ace of Spades HQ Some of you have probably already seen this, since it's older (July 09), but still interesting.
  21. Alright - I know where the clubs are, and I have read what their websites say about beginners. I believe every word, and I know from experience that the pro-gun community is very accepting of n00bs like me, but I'd still like to hear from TGO members who have started from scratch. I know everyone is different, so your own stories would be very much appreciated. What do you really have to know to go out and shoot a match? How long does it take to be competitive (ability and talent are a factor here, but I've asked for testimonials, so go ahead)? Is participation, apart from your range practice, enough to improve your skills? Will there be babes? Thanks, ladies and gents. I'm on the fence about competitive shooting, as far as whether or not it's worth the time and money. I'm thinking it's one of those things that would be cool to try, but...at the same time, I could sleep in as well. Your input, as always, is greatly appreciated.

    XD or XDm

The m also has a shorter trigger reset. I love my XDm 9, for what it's worth. Shoot them both, you can't go wrong with either.
  23. I know it's nearly impossible to avoid purchasing Chinese goods, but the idea of owning a gun made by near-slave labor seems especially malicious and wrong.

    gotta be said

Value for value. I've used this site for several months, and have really enjoyed it. The best compliment I could pay to TGO David is using my money to pay him for his hard work. Keep it up, man.
  25. Hi-Point bashing may be a bit more fair. I was in G&L buying a new P229 when a guy came in with a new Hi-Point, complaining of feeding problems. Everyone within earshot just kinda rolled their eyes, but were nice enough not to say anything. Most reputations are earned, after all.
