  1. The TCP has a really nice trigger, and that's coming from a guy who summer-carries a Kahr PM9.  As I've said before elsewhere, if the PT709 had the trigger of the TCP, there would be no need whatsoever for anybody to buy a Kahr 9mm.  Get on it, Taurus.
  2. Do you have a use for it, or is it trade bait for later?  I only ask because there aren't that many handgun hunters, and they likely all already have their S&Ws in .41 or .44 mag, while anybody wanting a .30 carbine pistol probably already has a TC Contender.  A man with brass ones might want to take that thing into a herd of wild pigs, but I'm having trouble imagining a niche for the pistol that isn't already filled.  It still gets major points for being unique, but sometimes unique means it didn't solve any problems, hence the discontinuation.
  3. Looks like somebody smashed the fudge out of that box, suggesting some combo of packaging and / or handling issues.
  4. Hey Bonedaddy - I've got some extra "G"s laying around I'd trade for some apostrophes straight up - waddaya say?

Do Not Sell That Pistol!  Money troubles come and go, but that's a once in a lifetime gun - keep it and let the next several generations enjoy a tangible connection with their family history.

    flip up sights

I run Midwest Industries front and rear backup sights and have been very happy with them; they fit nicely under my scope (disregard the Mauser bolt in the foreground, that's part of another project):
  7. I recently replaced my stock A2-style handguards with a MI free-float one piece and have really enjoyed it thus far - it's very slim.  Link to site: http://www.midwestindustriesinc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_ID=450 .  The offer it in lengths from 7.0 up to 15.0 inches.
  8. I picked up this little advertisement while at a Mapco Mart in Franklin, advertising a new gun show in Mt. Pleasant this weekend. The website shown at the bottom provides info on how to get tables, but not much else, other than that there's a show coming up 9/17-18 in Lebanon. There is also a printable $1.00 off coupon on the main page. Anybody know anything about this outfit, or the Mt. Pleasant show in particular?
  9. Bad news on the M1 front...I was all set to shoot last Saturday, but needed to strip and lube the rifle, as it was bone dry.  Takedown was easy, though the follower pin took some effort to remove (note the foreshadowing), but reassembly proved impossible.  After much fiddling and reading, along with more fiddling, I found that the bullet guide was out of spec, and an examination of the follower pin showed it had been force-fitted at the rifle's last assembly.  Whoever did that job had to be a few knuckle hairs from being up a tree, as it must have required some serious strength.  A new bullet guide is on the way, but it will be some time before I have a weekend day free to shoot.  Alas, the wait continues.
  10.   I'll start a new thread in the show and tell section at some point, but before I show it, I want to be able to tell how it shoots.  It should be nice - it's a very tight gun with little sign of having been shot a ton.  The stock is dinged up in spots, as is the exposed portion of the barrel, but everything under the wood looks pristine.  The rifling looks good, the feed ramps and bolt look nice, muzzle gauged at 1+, throat at 2+.  For a milsurp, the trigger is nice - it breaks more cleanly than my k98, though it's a bit heavier.
  11. 5.  Just picked it up, need to give it a once over, lube it up, and shoot it sometime this weekend.
  12. Sadly, I misread the SN and missed a digit. It's a seven digit postwar model.
  13. :woohoo: Check your estore account info. The serial number should also be shown. April 1942.
  14. SHIPPED!   SOON...
  15. Last week, I made an inquiry about the status of my Service Grade H&R order, upon which I was informed that they were backordered, and the delivery timeframe was now 120-180 days.  BOO!   Today, I received the following email from The CMP:   Sir, As you may know, the HRA Service grade rifle you requested is currently on backorder. Our serial number records show that we have significantly more HRA serial numbers than any other manufacturer, so there will not be a problem filling your order.  However, this may take several weeks. There is a very limited quantity of Springfield rifles that we have accumulated. We are working the oldest orders first and are now contacting a few customers to offer the option to change the order to this item.  Please let us know if you would like to change your order to the Springfield manufacturer at the same grade and price. We will need your reply to make the change by August 2, so we are able to fill as many orders as possible. If we do not hear from you by the requested date, we will keep your order on backorder for the HRA Service grade rifle. Thank you, CMP Customer Service   After confirming the Springfields were in as good or better condition (with an earlier delivery date implied by the above message), I sent a polite email response to the effect of HELL YES SEND ME ONE WANT IT NOW NOW NOW!!!!
  16. I've got a fairly beat up Russian-capture K98 I picked up not too long ago - literally the only nice thing about the rifle is the bore; everything else is pretty well roughed up, electro-pencilled, etc. The finish on the stock is flaking off, and everytime I shoot or otherwise handle the rifle, I get little flakes of the finish stuck to my hands, cheek, clothes, etc. Are there any options for dealing with this other than refinishing the stock? I'd prefer to leave it original*, but this is really annoying. The flaking (shown in the picture below) involves the shiny coating coming off the wood and sticking to everything it contacts. Any suggestions? What is the coating on the stock? Thanks for your input. For reference, this is a 1936 built by Paul Mauser & Sons in one of their factories. The Reds did a number on it. Parts of the action appear to have been painted black, not sure if that was originally done or just more fine Russian craftmanship. *The other option, of course, would be to salvage the action and clean things up, put it in a new stock, drill and tap, etc., e.g. a full-on sporterization. With the condition of the rifle as is, I don't see too much point in halfway measures.
  17.   The Whole Foods ones will be worse...they'll be just as fat and will smug you to death.  Zombie, having cornered me: "I only drink cruelty-free free-range certified organic hormone and antibiotic-free milk from cows raised by farm workers who are paid a living wage".  Me: [shoot self].
  18. This is all true, but German has some good qualities.  My favorite is that they can make a complex idea or phrase into one word, for instance: schadenfreude is the pleasure you take from the misfortune of another, and backpfeifengesicht loosely translates to "a face in need of a fist".
  19.   That right there is why when I speed, I speed for real.  I've only had 3 speeding tickets my entire life, but I've always made it easy on the ticketing officer and myself.  I got one 5 years ago during the morning rush heading north on I-65 just north of Harding - absolutely beautiful commute, everybody, all four lanes, running 70+ mph in a 65 zone, no consideration whatsoever for HOV priveleges (stupid as all get out, but that's for another time).  I was running ~82 in the left lane with nothing but wide open space in front of me and got lasered by an unmarked car.  After I pull over, the officer comes to my window as says "What's the legal reason you were going 83 in a 65 mph zone?".  Me:  "Is there one?" :hat:
  20. Not sure if nodakspud.com stamps or mills, but it might be worth an email to find out.  I've seen positive reviews of other products they make.
  21.   No problem.  General rule of thumb on the .40 conversions is that you can always go down, but cannot go up from 9mm (though now that I look at my earlier post, I'm not sure my explanation of why that is so is correct).  Aaaannnd, after a quick Google search, it appears the reason stems from the breech face dimensions, which makes sense.
  22.   QFT.
  23.   I'm assuming you've already been to the shotgun range in Christiana, but just in case you haven't, here's their website: http://www.bigspringsclaytargets.com/ .  $5 / round, nice facilities, all to spec for trap and skeet, plenty of bays.  The only thing I'd hold against them is that it's singles only for trap, but I don't hit the first clay enough to complain about a second opportunity to miss.
  24.   Nope.  The parent case of the .357 SIG is the .40, which has a larger diameter casing that requires different dimensions for the extractor (among other things) than a 9mm.
