  1. When I first bought my mkIII used, I felt the need to strip, inspect, and clean. I'll do so again in about 10k rounds. I envy the YouTube guys whose guns came apart so easy - I have to use a hammer and punch just to get the big mainspring pin out. On the plus side, the mkIIs and IIIs are known to run great dirty. Maybe one day I'll be good enough to tell when my dirty gun is the problem regarding accuracy, but it won't be soon.
  2. The LWRC and POF products are very sharp, but I think when I get around to starting this project, I'll choose CMMG - the price point is more attractive for the 1st EBR.
  3. My attention - you've got it.
  4. There's some medical staffing companies in Nashville that cover middle TN - she might want to try one of them for some temp-to-hire work in the Dickson area. Try Maxim Healthcare Staffing (full disclosure - my brother works for them). I don't think they cover the office staff angle, but somebody in the office should be able to point her in the right direction towards a complany that does.
  5. SNL Goofs on Government Workers I roundly denounce this anti-government rhetoric from SNL. This is clearly a precursor to violence and all principle parties involved should be monitored by DHS. The sketch may not be all that great, but I just love me some blue-on-blue action. You have to admire the left's innate ability to form a circular firing squad every decade or so.
  6. Here's some science to make you feel smart: It is now technically possible to turn lead into gold, but too expensive to do so for production. Mice don't need to drink water to survive - they get their water from food instead. Phosphine gas (WWI weapon) is used to fumigate railcars of cereal grains. The human nose can detect sulfur in parts-per-billion levels (0.0000001%).
  7. Along with Hu Jintao, Wen Jibao, Hugo Chavez, Evo Morales, King Abdullah...bow indeed.
  8. Somebody call SUNTZU and let him know Bill Clinton is using his computer. I'd delete the browser history without looking, too. Some things are better left unkown.

    Range Report

If you ever make it to the Nashville area, you're welcome to shoot mine.
  10. ^^^ Hate Speech!!! I posted that link for the children, and for the greater good of all our communities. By denigrating me, you clearly demonstrate your hatred of children.
  11. Power Line - Have you heard the one about the Jewish merchant? Well, Jim, that should play real well in Tel Aviv. This is pure Smart Power in action. I like tasteless stereotype-based humor as much as anybody, but damn! Jones needs his head examined if he thinks he can get away with something like this in public. Also, where's the part in the story where Johnny Taliban beheads the two Jews?
  12. I know a guy who has given me the opportunity to hunt deer on his land. I only own pistols. While it would be far easier to buy a 700, model 70, or similar in .270, I think this would be a great excuse for my first AR build. CMMG is the only company I've seen building gas-piston uppers (I much prefer this design) in 6.8 SPC...does anyone have any experience with the company? Second, is there a way to build a similar upper with good quality components while saving a buck or six? Thanks, TGOers. If all works out, I'll have questions regarding lowers, parts kits, furniture, and stocks someday.
  13. I'm not a big dude and didn't mind the recoil of the 709, albeit with WWB, not JHP +P. Are other "pocket" 9mm guns more manageable?

    Range Report

The XDm 9mm is a fine gun indeed. I've put ~2,000 through mine since last May; I had to get a .22 pistol just to cut down on ammo costs. If you get tired of the 3-dot sights, TruGlo TFOs are very nice.
  15. OT, since I have nothing to add re: 1911s, you're not weird. In this particular instance, you're dead-on correct. For the record, I drive a Chevy Blazer POS. 140k and still chugging along. And now, back to our previously scheduled program...
  16. The odds say that life is out there, as many have mentioned. It would certainly be a waste of space otherwise, but that doesn't mean we'll find out about it. A major problem with the idea of interstellar travel is approaching the speed of light - ignoring the enormous amounts of energy required, space is not a vacuum. At speeds near L, the lonely Hydrogen atoms that exist in empty space would be enough to irradiate and destroy passengers and equipment. Lack of gravity may get you to your destination, but you'll be DOA. Wormholes have been suggested; the simplest method of bending space-time back upon itself I've seen has been to create a rotating cylinder, approximately the mass of the sun, of which the outer edge is moving at near L. Creating such an object would kill anyone within millions of miles before it was ever completed, notwithstanding the impossibility of controlling it.
  17. I've only been into handguns for about a year, and while my precision (repeatability) has improved, my accuracy (on point of aim) has not. I'm right handed, and have the same problem lots of others do - I miss left or low / left. No reconfiguration of grip or trigger finger position seems to change this. Below are two targets, both from five yards. The tendencies shown are consistent at greater distances, but the spread is greater. I'm asking those of you in the know to help me fix my flaw. I'd adjust my sights, but I don't want to adjust the guns to fit my mistakes; I want to adjust myself to shoot straighter. First, here is one magazine (19 rounds) of WWB at 5 yards from a Springfield XDm in 9mm: Next is a target with 40 rounds of .22 Win "333" HV HP from a Ruger MkIII. The leftward tendency is still there, and the low-tendency is more pronounced with the low recoil. Discount the two flyers; those are a concentration issue, I think. Any suggestions from fellow TGOers are appreciated. Thanks! I use flickr, and it's not cooperating. If anybody knows how to get their images embedded, please let me know so I can fix it.
  18. I just shot it for the first time on Saturday, and I've got some practicing to do. I'm certain it's not the gun, since I've never fired anything smaller than a 229. I'm in Franklin as well; shoot me a message if you want to try it out. Despite my own shooting flaws, my first impression is that it's a good value for the price. Fit and finish are good, and the sights are good enough to do what it's intended to do. Recoil is also very manageable.
  19. Fun stat of the day: home foreclosures for 1Q 2010 are up 35% year over year vs. 1Q 2009. There's still a lot of bad paper to work through, especially since the 5 year ARMs taken out at the tail end of the bubble (approx. 2007) won't come up for readjustment until 2012. Recovery will come, but it will be slow - there's a lot of pain early in the healing process, and this one is not going to be any fun. Keep your jobs, if you've got one, and make sure at least one of your co-workers is less valuable than you. One can only hope that the American people learn more about "spending less than you make" than our legislature. Judging by the sharp increase in the average savings rate (BEA : Personal Saving Rate) since the downturn, it appears the people are smarter than their representatives.
  20. Mike's Van:
  21. I just did mine in December, and the distances were 3, 7, and 15 yards. I've seen posted elsewhere here at TGO that if you score 100% at 3 and 7 yards, you can miss at 15 and still pass the test. If the missus can hit a paper plate at 7 yards, she should be just fine. That said, I can't think of any other pastime where practicing is just so much fun! There's no reason why she can't be Dirty Harriet with some good range time, focus on good technique, and maybe some further instruction (funds and time permitting, of course).
  22. OT *apologies, but I'm curious: What line of work are you folks in that ended up paying? I know too many people who overpay and get too-big refunds, but relatively few that cut a check.
  23. Supertuck or Minituck? I carry a P229 in the Supertuck and it works well.
  24. Nothing like getting smacked in your (previously) pretty face to make you fearful. It seems like pro-gun folks are beset on both sides. We've got our opponents outside, the Bradys et al., and then we have our morons internally. The Brady Bunch is never going to be reformed or convinced. If somebody can figure out how to get our morons to stop doing nearly everything they do short of working or eating; or at least stop filming their idiocy, I'll send a donation.
