  1. You got hosed by bad weather...I talked to a co-worker in Chicago today who said the wind was outrageous (for Chicago! e.g. they had straight-line winds over 45 mph), and it was very high here as well, with the weather service calling average windspeed at 25+. This afternoon, with the front that moved through, there wasn't a single good spot to try and land a plane anywhere in the midwest / midsouth. Better late than never. I hate that you were delayed, but getting home is the ultimate goal. With the weather today, it sure looks like the right call was made.
  2. I'm just repeating what has been passed down to me from my coaches when I played: there is nothing worse than a two goal lead. You get comfortable, and 45 seconds later, the game is tied. For southern middle-TN folks, the Preds are having an open practice at the A-Game sportsplex in Franklin Tuesday (right beyond Lee company off Seaboard Lane) starting at 3:30; practice runs from 4:00 to 5:00ish, there is time scheduled after that for autographs, along with activities for the kids, etc.
  3. I was looking forward to seeing the custom engraving, but if you have to sell it, it won't last long. I hope you do well enough on the sale to make an even nicer project next time around, and share those pics too.
  4. Having been involved as a coach and participant in other sports, I know that dedicated practice is the only thing that allows a person to reach their "personal best" level; that being the point where their natural abilities are maxed out. Everyone says "practice makes perfect", but I disagree. Practice makes permanent - perfect practice makes perfect. The conventional wisdom says "shoot 1000s of rounds, and you'll improve", and I agree, to a point. Do anything enough, and your consistency will improve. However, if you're not practicing the right things, you are also making bad habits permanent. If you've ever played golf, you know what I mean...Good luck getting better if you ingrain the swing that shoots you an 88 every time out. So, what makes for "perfect practice" regarding accuracy with a pistol? What are the 2-3 key things to focus on every trip to the range? On its face, this probably seems like a dumb question, but I haven't been able to find authoritative sources describing a dry and live-fire practice regimen to follow. As always, your input and suggestions are appreciated.
  5. I've had a membership at both, and I no longer bother with Sam's. I can't recall anyone in this thread quitting Costco to join Sam's, but several have done the opposite - that's pretty strong for anecdotal evidence.
  6. It was (unfortunately) crystal clear in Nashville. I hope my beloved Irish find a defense before next season.
  7. What you say is entirely possible, if not all that likely, but you paint with too broad a brush regarding the meaning of "desperation" - there are easy and legal avenues for gun sales available for those who need money quickly (pawn shops come to mind); following that, you make an appeal to authority (If you have nothing to hide, what is the problem?) that always leads to further control of law-abiding citizens, regardless of the issue at hand. These are both reasonable and pragmatic arguments, but ultimately end up controlling 99.9% of those who follow the law, at the expense of the 1 in 1000 who willfully live beyond the bounds of a legal and civilized society.
  8. I played a round of golf at Greystone CC in Dickson, TN, last year, and the quail were calling quite a bit. I can't recall hearing them anywhere else, but if you've ever been there, you'd know it's not good predator / hog / turkey / deer land - there's not much at all in terms of adjacent forest, while there's plenty of high grass and open area. This is only one observation, but it supports what others have mentioned about quail being outcompeted for resources.
  9. I've always been a tinkerer, so my Ruger Mark III has been played with quite a bit lately. I added the Volquartsen trigger / hammer / sear (awesome!!!!11!!eleventy), and was very pleased. Since the pistol I bought used here on TGO had the Weaver rail included, I decided to mount a red-dot sight on it, just for grins. Not wanting to drop $200+, I decided to take a flyer on the Sightmark Minishot, at $79.99 from Opticsplanet.com. Pros: 1/3 the cost of a C-More or Burris fastfire (after bases are purchased, see below) Intergrated Weaver base (the pricier sights require bases to be purchased separately) Holds zero Two brightness settings (I generally use the high power, as I tend to shoot outdoors) Much better reviews than the sub-$50 sights, e.g. BSA, Barska, other alleged "bargains" Cons: Integrated mount means no other mounting options are possible (the Burris and C-More, among others, offer mounts that fit in the rear sight dovetail, which does give a much cleaner look) No "click" adjustments...most of the time. Sometimes you feel a click, sometimes you don't. It's very much a guess and check zeroing process. For myself, this isn't a big deal, because I use Federal or Winchester bulk ammo, so $0.03 a squeeze doesn't bother me. Overall, I'm very happy with it, for what I paid - it's a winner in regards to price v. value. From a rest, sub 2" groups at 25 yards are possible, if you do your part. I use cheap bulk ammo, so there may be room to improve there. If you don't have $300 to go first-class, this is a sight to check out.
  10. That is absolutely awesome! While a rifle is only wood and steel, the thought, effort, and time you've put into it (along with the heartfelt post above) tells me that there's a boy in Seymour with a great father. That is worth more than the finest rifle ever made by man. Well done, and congratulations.
  11. ...From the way back when? Well, now there's "Beltway Adventure", brought to you by Iowahawk (best satire on the web, bar none)....and it's teh roxxorest!!!111!!on3!! (note: I think that's how you say something is a must-read in internetese) http://iowahawk.typepad.com/iowahawk/2010/10/beltway-adventure.html If you don't get it, you probably don't remember MS-DOS either.
  12. I enjoyed the movie (Fear and Loathing...), but the books are where it's at for pure craziness. If you haven't read his stuff, you're missing out. I don't know what it is about his work, but in spite of the fact that I stand for 90% of the things he despises (we agree on guns and explosions, and chemical excess to a limited extent), it's near impossible to put the books down. Sign of a great writer. At one time, I used this as an avatar: It's a picture of HST drawn by Ralph Steadman (the illustrator from "Fear and Loathing" among others), that now appears on Flying Dog Brewery's "Gonzo Imperial Porter". It's ~8% alcohol, so you have to pick it up at da likka sto, but if you like dark malty beers with some serious hops on the side, it's worth a shot.
  13. Here I am, it's a bit old, but I don't take many pictures, so imagine me 4 years older with shorter hair (but I have all of it!). Edit: I'm Patrick (duh), and I'm on the small side for TGO - 6'00", 190 lbs. Need more grits.
  14. The inspiration for your handle preferred mescaline, amphetamines, LSD, ether, pot, opium, coke, booze (rum and mezcal), and explosives, if I remember correctly. Me, I stick to beer and good single malt scotch. Then again, I'm just not that gonzo.
  15. I've torn both of mine, so you have my utmost sympathies...what a crappy injury. The left healed with lots of cortisone and 3 weeks in a cast, while the right required surgery. 5 years after, they both feel great and don't interfere with shooting one bit. Regarding fatigue while shooting, I experience the same thing; I've found that I get more vertical wobble as the session progresses. Personally, my shoulders get fatigued (anterior deltoids). Were I dedicated enough to fix that, 3 sets of 15 front shoulder-raises 3 days a week with ~5 lb. dumbbells would fix the issue. Note that pretty much all the pro shooters have popeye forearms and big shoulders; just find a way to look like JJ Racaza and you're all set. The Army Marksmanship Unit drill manual is floating around on here too...there's some good endurance drills you might be interested in.
  16. "Lawyers, Guns, and Money", by Warren Zevon...specifically, the third verse: Stranded in Honduras; I'm a desperate man. Send lawyers, guns, and money; The **** has hit the fan. I've been using it for the last 8 years, so I'll stick with it. Obviously, the phone is on vibrate at work.
  17. My hoity-toity grease is slide-glide...but it may not necessarily be a lube issue. If you shoot a 1911 with a high "thumbs forward" grip, with the strong hand thumb riding the safety, it's very easy for the thumb to rub against the slide, slowing it down just enough for a failure to return to battery, with no ejection problems. Been there, done that. Even the lightest touch (i.e. you won't feel it, since it all happens so fast) is enough to cause a malf. If the action cycles smoothly by hand, this could be the issue.
  18. Hey, at least it still lets you access this site...it's only a matter of time until TGO reroutes to locavore vegan recipes and locally sourced handmade clothing if those hippies have their way. I love my iPhone, but Apple's insistence on total control of the user experience runs contra their old "1984" commercials more than a little.
  19. In the interest of edumacation, what is the root cause of kesava's feeding problem (symptom), which is cured by leaving one round out of the mag? Is there a permanent way to solve the underlying problem?
  20. Had a chance to fire a Kahr PM9 at the range last weekend...if you're willing to spend the extra money beyond the cost of a Kel-Tec or PT709, the trigger is much better. It's light, very smooth, and has a crisp break and reset.
  21. This is a "should I get sausage or pepperoni on my pizza" thread - you're going to enjoy it either way. If the OP really does want to mod a Glock, as some other posters have suggested, he could also consider an XDm. By the time you put in a Ghost trigger and aftermarket disconnecter, there's just not much difference beyond ergos; cost should be pretty close.
  22. Food for thought - you may want to follow Ace's suggestion: RNC Announces Major GOTV Push -- Make 40 Calls to Voters From Comfort of Own Home . I'm going to do it...who knows what can result?
  23. Those weren't Coyote, at least in the biological sense. The purebred adult Coyote is very shy, solitary, and subsists on rodents and carrion. When Coyote interbreed with domesticated dogs, the offspring inherit the dogs' pack instinct, and will attack larger prey as part of a group. Feral dogs and feral semi-yotes are a threat to anyone raising animals...farmers with young cows, goats, chickens, etc.. The hybrids need to be put down on sight, and the state should allow it with no restrictions. Dogyotes are not indigenous species, after all. The day they allow that will be the day they allow feral hogs to be taken with no restrictions, which is coincedentally the day I'll be named king of whereveristan.
  24. Like Chemprof, I have the Uncle Mike's. Not having seen the Midway bag, I can't make a direct comparison, but I'm pretty sure my range bag will outlive me. A normal range visit for me involves 3 or 4 pistols, 2 sets of eyes, 1 set of ears, disposable earplugs, targets, staple gun and staples, basic tools and cleaning supplies, hordes of magazines, and 100-200 rounds of .45 and 9mm, plus a bulk box of .22lr. I never use all of it, but it's there if the urge arises, and the bag holds it all.
  25. If you're a safety-conscious shooter, and it's not crowded, the Stones River facility is fine. If you aren't safety-conscious fix that **** now. If it's crowded, you'll probably prefer another venue. Like a couple others, I shoot at CHMR (Charlie Haffner's place as referenced by lagerhead and RISC77), having "graduated" from Stones River to someplace better. The retard factor is greatly reduced at CHMR, and the unsafe n00b factor is 0% - you don't find out about the place unless you're really into shooting, or with somebody who is. Also, you can't beat the atmosphere or the price, and Charlie himself is a fine old fella, who has forgotten more about shooting than most of us will ever know. If you're the type who cares about the presence of RSOs one way or the other, note that there are none; shooters are required to maintain proper safety practices themselves.
