I can't say enough good things about CHMR, or the owner, Charlie Haffner. It is the most inherently "safe" range I've ever been to, and I think that's because there's no advertising except word of mouth. If you've heard about it, you're familiar with gun safety, and probably a fairly dedicated shooter. I'm kind of weird about getting muzzle-swept (I hate it, and will immediately help you in correcting your safety issues), and this has never happened on either the rifle or pistol ranges in my time there. I can't say the same for the TWRA or gunshop ranges.

I just saw this; my apologies if this is a repost. For 2011, Browning is putting out a 1911-A1 in .22lr that is 85% the size of the original, with a blowback action, much like that found on the Ruger 22/45 or Browning Buckmark. I'm not sure whether the market really demands another .22 option for the 1911 enthusiast, but more competition = lower prices, so I hope they make a go of it. With a $600 MSRP, it had better be much nicer than currently available dedicated .22 1911s and conversion kits (so why fixed sights? Historical accuracy?). These will be available sometime in the 1st quarter of next year - when somebody on here buys one, send a range report. Browning Introduces 1911-22 L.R. Autoloading Pistol

According to the Sig rep I spoke to, they're not scheduled to roll out until August of next year, and that's assuming that there are no setbacks that alter their target date.

I hate to be all Darth Friedman about it, but it seems like they all held the reasonable belief that if they paid for something, they owned it, and it shouldn't be taken from them by legislative fiat or revolutionary caprice. I'm not saying they were all saints, no, not at all, but ownership of private property is something that has to be honored for the world to function.

"Day by Day" by (I think) John Muir. It runs everyday on some blogs; thisainthell.us is one that I know of, which is a pretty good place to keep up with what is going on in current military affairs.

BigGovernment.com has done a good job of following the case in detail - for more info, check them out. -
Brian Aitken sentence commuted to time served
StPatrick replied to a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
That squares with what I've read - a pardon was never requested. With a commutation, the appeals process can move forward with Aitken out of prison, and if it fails, he doesn't go back. It seems likely, based on the conduct of the judge (who was removed from the bench by Christie over an unrelated poor ruling), that at appeal a mistrial will be called, and I doubt the state would move to re-try at that point. Asking for a pardon would have been much more risky for Aitken - if the Gov didn't grant it, he'd stay in jail throughout the appeal process. Either way, it's good to be in TN. NJ seems to be very comfortable in their handbasket. -
He'd be a lot happier if the cartels weren't manned by Mexican Army deserters who took their duty M-4s with them, along with heavier stuff - they've been found with SAWs, full-auto COMBLOC weapons, and other leftovers from Central American militaries. This effort by the FATF (you know what the 1st letter means) is an attempt to put lace curtains on an outhouse. The only reason US-sold guns end up getting positively traced is that we're the only ones who keep track. Imagine what you could pick up with $100k in Nicaragua - a semi-auto civilian-legal rifle would be small beans, when you can pick up a surplus M2 or PKM (or six) from the leftovers being sold off by yet another semi-failed socialist state. I'm not an "it's all going to hell, and they'll take our guns" type, but the stubborn insistence on the part of multiple governments to only obliquely confront the issues regarding Mexico's narco-terrorists, at the expense of the free exercise of the rights of US citizens, is disturbing. We have a few reasonable gun laws in this country - enforce them, and force Mexico and Central / South America to do the same with their bad actors. Extra regulations will not stop the flood of murders or guns; it's only polishing a turd. The cloth gets dirty, and you still have a handful of s***. Yes, I know, I like hyphens and semicolons. It's an idiosyncrasy.

Best C&R rifle for a weekend Shooter
StPatrick replied to Mason's topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
I'm planning on applying for a C&R, now that I've been bitten by the milsurp bug, but there's one part of having the C&R I'd like some more info on: Several have mentioned the "fringe benefits" of having a C&R, which includes discounts with some dealers...seeing as how I'm apparently on a quest to increase Midway's share value, I'd like to know more about these discounts and perks, if anybody cares to tell. -
Trucknutz - Now for Gunz! ...seriously, the rifle looks like it has a satchel.

Well, you would know. I'm not so sure about the pink carpet... As for the pad, it really is for lengthening things more than recoil - my nose ends up almost on top of my right thumb as it is currently. I did move back from that position after some unintentional nosepicking, but it's not quite natural, so the extra inch will be great (that's what she said!). As for benching, that's a sickness I haven't gotten yet. I do most of my shooting offhand, and the rest standing with my front elbow resting on something. I can't imagine letting my shoulder take all the force of that 7.62x54r recoil...ugggh. I'm much happier letting my body weight soak some of it up.

Looking at the one I have for a Sig P229, it shouldn't be an issue (not that it couldn't be, but...) since the retention seems to come from the trigger guard area.

What if you only kill paper enemies with your rifles?

You cannot beat TruGlo TFOs.

And since it will be demanded, here's a picture of it taken by the TGO member who sold it to me: ...It still looks the same. My 1st target at 50 yards, front elbow supported: Before you all get too excited and beg to be my friends over that fine display of marksmanship, count the holes. It was a 10 shot string; one was 2" off to the right, and the other is a mystery, cause I effed that one up real good. I feel bad for the imaginary commie standing 2 feet to the left of this one - I think he may have taken one to the junk. This was my first time firing 7.62x54r, and I am officially a fan. It's stout enough that you know you're firing a rifle meant for more than plinking, but the M39 is a heavy gun, so it wasn't unpleasant, even with the metal buttplate. I'll be putting a 1" extension on to lengthen LOP, so recoil is going down in the future.

Daniel / Metalhead - I hate that this happened to you, as I've had nothing but good experiences with both G&L locations. Is it perhaps time to get the family together and craft some sort of policy regarding sales to emotionally agitated customers? As much as I hate how litigated our society has become, there has to be a real financial risk inherent in selling a weapon to an angry man...they only cause trouble 0.001% of the time, but the repercussions could be very negative, for your business and for solid gun owners as a group. +1 to you for handling the situation in a mature way.

This rendition follows the book by Charles Portis. It is not a remake of the John Wayne version - it's a more literal rendition of the original work. I'm guessing Rooster Cogburn is going to quite a bit more flawed (in the book he's still a drunk, but isn't loveable, friendly, or much else other than a hunter of men / drunk). If it really follows the book, Mattie will be the real focus of attention. Either way, these guys have a blank check from me. Fargo, Lebowski, Raising Arizona...I'll go see it; everybody else waits for HBO or Redbox.

It saddens me that "1984" and "Animal Farm" seem more relevant every day. I'm no Rand fan, but it REALLY scares me that some of the hyperbolic content from "Atlas Shrugged" is approaching reality. I have no desire to live in the future that cold-hearted B envisioned...the collapse of everything would be bad enough, but then to have to spend 20 minutes looking at someone while you infer every minor detail about their awesome or debased character would get old fast. Plus, my internal monologue is neither interesting or insightful, so I guess I'm one of the regular folks who starve.

Allow me to fix that for you:

Taurus has a shot timer app as well...I know it's available for iPhones, but you might want to check and see if it's available for more platforms.

That's a well-executed coating job, but what you've got there is a P239.

When G&L had their Hendersonville grand opening, I asked the Sig rep when we'd be seeing these. I was told they'll be available around August, so figure sometime between June and 2012.
