  1.   Welcome to firearms enthusiasm!  There's so much arcane and trivial knowledge involved in any class of arms you wish to gain knowledge of that you can spend the rest of your life learning while you shoot.  Personally, I find that one of the more attractive features of gun ownership.  Obviously there are the utilitarian uses of guns which everyone is aware of, but the continuous learning is a big plus to me.  You can be as engaged as you want or need to be, and it will never end.  There's always something more to learn.
  2. I bumped into a co-worker earlier today who knows I'm a bit of a gunny, and the small talk quickly turned to guns, especially the big "what next?" regarding potential legislation and executive orders.  He's had a Ruger .357 for years, but recently added a SR9c to the stable, along with 2 17-rounders with grip extensions, along with the standard 10-round magazine.  His concern was eventual magazine replacement, especially regarding the so-called "high-capacity" magazines.  Based on the volume he shoots, those should last longer than he does, but I told him that if (and when) a mag craps out, all that is generally needed is a new spring as long as the feed lips are still in tolerance.  We then checked out Numrich and Wolff to see if springs were available - now it's entirely possible (and fairly likely) that I don't have the smartphone-fu to find the correct parts, but I couldn't.   Is anyone selling replacement springs for SR9 magazines?  If not, what would be a reasonable replacement?  I'd think a spring from a similar-sized P95 could work, but have no way of knowing, and I do not want to steer this man wrong - after all, he's a responsible adult who wants to get more into shooting.  I want to be as supportive and helpful as possible.   Thoughts?
  3.       I haven't used them, just cleaned them out - had some sand and other scunge left over from "real-world" usage.   They feel solid and lock up tight, and the coating has prevented any corrosion, even though several have quite a bit of the black worn off.  Just to see if the coating was still effective after heavy use, I ran several of the mag bodies through the dishwasher sans internal parts.  Nary a rust spot.  Regarding reliability, the guys I know who used the HK mags overseas swore by them, and they are enlisted infantry with multiple combat tours.  If they didn't break them, I won't.   As far as whether or not they're worth the HK premium, I can't say.  For someone like me who will use them on the range in light duty, I doubt it, but I didn't pay $60 for them.  Frankly, I'll never push these to levels where I could evaluate performance at extremes against USGI or pmags, which is obviously where a high-dollar magazine has to shine to justify the increase in cost.
  4. CTD is no friend to the community that supports them.  I won't be putting my hands where they can bite them ever again.
  5. I bought a small tub of Slide-Glide Lite several years ago, and it appears it will last another 10 years.  It's great stuff: http://brianenos.com/pages/slide-glide.html
  6. Brown Santa dropped of 5000 rounds of Eley .22lr today.  THAT should last a while.
  7. Not selling.  Considered it, since I was given an early Christmas gift of a pile of H&K AR mags (the ones that were stupid expensive before Newtown), but I'd rather have them in my possession should our Ear Leader decide to do something stupid.
  8.   1. regarding your assertion as to how a linebacker should separate himself from an OG, you are simply wrong.  When a man 50+ pounds your size gets to you and gets fit, you go where he wants you to go.  An LB spends the first instant of every play reading; the Bama guards were able to go upfield at the snap.  The ND LBs and Safeties (when they were low) were put under physical control by larger men just as they were starting to move to their point of attack.  Had ND played UGA, they wouldn't have even made that gamble.  Their center is just a center, where Barrett Jones has played tackle and guard.   2. I concede that I still can't figure out what Brian Kelly's offense was trying to accomplish.   3. You can talk about who deserves to be in the game all you want, but face facts - the way the system works, had OSU players not traded favors for (likely crappy) tattoos, Alabama isn't in the game at all.  Only two teams had undefeated regular seasons.  Until there is a 16 team playoff, people will argue about who should have been there and who shouldn't.
  9. The challenge here is that were we to use their tactics, we would lose.  Having already been painted as extremists and worse, with the support of a mainly complicit media any overt pushback will be presented in the most negative possible light.  My guess is that something along the lines of smothering them with a million kindnesses is the way to go, but I have no idea how to approach that.  It seems to me that the big issue for the uninformed and uninvolved - e.g. those who haven't taken sides - is finding a way to remove the mystical and symbolic power of guns, such that people see them as wood, metal, and plastic, with no ability to self-determine.  The most effective way to do that is to teach the 4 rules and put a gun in the hand of those who fear them in a talismanic sense, but that's just not feasible on any scale that would make an impact.  That said, I have seen it work firsthand.   Good luck, David.  If you come up with anything, I'll help however I'm able.
  10.   Agreed.  When I looked at the schedule pre-season, I saw 4-4 through October with a likely 7-5 finish and a semi-important bowl game, so the 12-0 regular season was MAJORLY unexpected.  I do wish the Irish would have carried themselves better, though.  The poor tackling was so unlike what they'd done up to this point that it was like watching another defense out there.  The BS calls in the 1st quarter may have made some small difference, but the way Alabama played, ND could have gotten all the calls in the world and still been beaten.   Nick Saban deserves a great deal of credit for the way the Tide won the game.  He built a simple run-first followed by play-action game plan based on two gambles, both of which he won.  First, he bet that Center Barrett Jones could handle ND nose guard Lewis Nix one-on-one, something no other team has tried.  Nix was doubled all year; this was the first time someone played "best on best" against him, and Jones held his own.  The handful of times he was beaten were not enough to affect the outcome of the game.  This allowed the 'Bama guards to get to the 2nd level off the snap and neutralize Manti Te'o, which they did very effectively.  At that point, the running game was good to go, which in turn opened up the play-action game.  Saban's second gamble was his correct guess regarding how Bob Diaco (ND defensive coordinator) would play his safeties.  Saban (or his OC) correctly guessed they'd be in a 2-deep look up fairly close, and also inside the hashmarks in order to support run defense.  That's how ND started the game, and the successful run game forced them to stay in that posture.  It helps that Saban knew that ND would be unwilling to bring a safety into the box, exposing their remaining 3 DBs, the defensive backfield being easily the worst part of the ND defense for the last several years.  'Bama then exploited the safeties' positions with multiple long play-action passes where their receivers ran post-corner routes, running over the top of the underneath corners to the middle of the field, then cutting a hard 45 to the sidelines, which prevented the safeties from getting over the top in a position to do anything but tackle after the catch.   I love ND and can't stand whoever they're playing, but the coach in me is very impressed by the simplicity of the Alabama plan and the few assumptions that needed to be proven correct for it to be effective.  It was an absolute masterpiece of game-planning.  Barrett Jones had better have gotten the game ball* - if he had been unable to handle Nix by himself, Alabama would have been on plan B after their first (likely unsuccessful) drive.  I guess if he doesn't get a game ball, he'll still be one of the first handful of OLs drafted, which is not too shabby by its own right.   *Seriously - this cannot be said enough - by doing what no other center had been capable of doing this year (or last year), he allowed his guards to get upfield and neutralize ND's best defensive player, along with the next closest LB or safety.  Te'o was never a factor in the game, and that was no accident.
  11.   /shameless promotion on   I changed out gas blocks from a railed to a low-profile recently, so I have a railed block and Midwest low-profile gas block height front sight for sale in the classifieds.   /shameless promotion off
  12.   Eley's website lists a 40gr. lrn round called the "sport" that does 1085 fps at the muzzle.  The packaging is a different color, but it appears to be pretty much the same thing sgammo is selling.
  13.   Oh boy did it ever!  I just shot up the last of my .22 today, and now I have 5k more on the way - better ammo than I can get at Wally for 1/2 the price.  Great deal and thanks for sharing.
  14. I supervise some folks that make this:
  15.   There's no telling, thus no relaxing.  I think David's quote hit it on the head and provides some direction- our generations need to be vigilant and so do the next to such an extent that the next and subsequent generations don't have to deal with this BS.  Also, I'm not exhaling until after the game tonight.  I was 8 last time Notre Dame played for a national championship, and I really hope they pull one out tonight.  GO IRISH!
  16. And their website is back down.  Way to strike while the iron was hot!
  17. You need to take it out of the stock and look at the bottom of the receiver near the rear - there should be a mark showing what year the receiver was made and possibly a proofmark for the armory where it was forged.  Many Finn rifles were made with very early production receivers from rifles captured during the Winter Wars (around WWI; receivers date from 1890s onward).
  18. Here you go: When posting pictures, click the "photo" icon on the response toolbar. A message box will pop up - paste the direct link to the photograph there, and you're finished.
  19. More out of habit with rifled barrels than anything - my understanding is that aggressive cleaning can wear out a barrel faster than shooting. With a 12ga, I figure that a minor (or even major) amount of fouling won't have any effect on performance, so why bother?
  20. I've been using an o-ring jag with regular patches (I hate to take a brush to any barrel unless absolutely necessary) with good results, but no matter how much the interior of the barrel shines, and mine looks like a mirror, no patch ever comes out perfectly clean.  If you're okay with that you might try this: http://tinyurl.com/cbbdrts (safe link to Brownell's).
  21. I recently changed out the handguards and gas block on my AR, and needed a new front sight as a result.  I bought a Midwest Industries low-profile flip up front sight via our pal JoeBob (love the TGO discount).  When I backed the mounting screw out in order to add a drop of blue Loctite before mounting, the steel thread insert came out with the screw.  I sent a message via the MI customer service page describing the problem (with a link to a picture of the problematic screw and threads) and received a response the same day asking for my shipping info.  I was pleased with the quick response and expected to receive a mailer from them for me to send the defective sight assembly back for repair or replacement.   Today, 8 business days after my reply to their address request, UPS delivered a replacement sight.  No returns, authorization numbers, etc.  I was very pleased.   Anyways, I figured I'd post this since we've all heard about the 20:1 ratio of bad service reported v. good service reported.  Having owned several MI products before this latest experience and being fully satisfied, I decided I'd be one of the few to spread the word about a good customer service experience.
  22. As far as overbuilt goes, there's also the Ruger P95 to consider.  Even if it does break down, it's big and heavy enough to double as a war club...   If I were worried about parts failures to the extent of the OP, I'd lay in a supply of the small parts likely to break and learn how to replace them, along with replacement springs.
  23. I'll run 2 boxes (100 rounds) every time I hit the range.  Sadly, I don't make it there more than a few times a year.
  24.   Agreed.  Now the OP knows about Numrich, and will be able to share with someone else who needs some info.  There are absolutely no downsides to a more knowledgeable population of gun owners, especially as the gun owning community continues to gain in numbers.
  25. I'd hate to see what kind of a load you'd have to work up to damage a Ruger P-series.
