You probably do NOT have 3 stages of heat. You've probably got the compressor and electric heat backup. If you have electric auxilliary heat then it will go like this: HP T-Stat R Rc, R G G O O/B W1 Aux W2 N/A Y Y C C The extra terminals on the t-stat (E & L) aren't used.

Generators and vehicles are a great short term solution, but for any extended power outage you will want something that doesn't depend on a hard to get fuel source. (gas, diesel, etc.) This solar panel and portable refrigerator setup looks like it will take care of your needs. I think this setup will end up costing $300-$500 though.
