  1. Rightwinger, my hands aren't quite so steady these days. I'd like to have at least one follow up shot, if possible. I watch the "pros' on the coyote hunting videos, and even they need a second shot pretty often! That's the reason I'm trying to find a Savage bolt action in .223, or a Savage combo 24 in .223/20Ga or .223/12Ga. Either should be within my budget these days. The AK was just a passing thought, as I see lots of yote hunters using the ARs. Thanks.
  2. Has anyone tried to convert the ol' AK-47 to a good coyote gun by putting a .223 barrel on it? Is such a thing financially feasible? Anyone using one for hunting yotes? I was just thinking it should make a pretty good coyote gun. What do you guys think? What kind of accuracy and range could one expect from such a modification? Just trying to come up with a "cheap" yote gun for Middle Tennessee. "To anger a Conservative, lie to him. To anger a Liberal, tell him the truth." Theodore Roosevelt
  3. Has anyone built one of the Romy "G" AK-47 kits using a .223 barrel? Is it possible, without too much parts changing? Has anyone shot one modified like this? If so, what kind of accuracy can be expected , say out to 150 - 250 yards? thanks "To anger a Conservative, lie to him. To anger a Liberal, tell him the truth." Theodore Roosevelt
  4. I believe it's a pretty much proven fact that an AR, say in .223, is more accurate at say 200-300 yards than is the AK or SKS in 7.62 x 39. Without doing hours of research on ballistics, barrel lengths and twists, and the round themselves, why is there such a disparity? Is it the round? Is it the barrel twist? Or is it just the precise tolerances built into the modern day ARs? Also, how accurate is the AK chambered in .223 compared to the ARs? I don't mean to start WWlll here, but I'm willing to be educated! Thanks. "To anger a Conservative, lie to him. To anger a Liberal, tell him the truth." Theodore Roosevelt
  5. Just wondering if others run into this same problem. A guy has a gun listed for sale. I'm interested in buying the gun. I contact the guy via computer and ask questions about the gun. I also ask for more close up pics. He says the one posted is the only pic he has of the gun. He answered two very rudimentary questions: does the gun have any rust or pitting, and is there any cracks or splits in the stock or forearm. He ignored two emails after that. Then finally responded ... call me xxx-xxx-xxxx. I'm very interested in buying the gun, but want to know more before I make a long drive (2 1/2 hours) to look at it. Do you guys think he is hiding something about the gun, or that possibly the gun is stolen, or he just thinks he can fast talk on the phone? Thanks for your insight into this situation. 6. Krull, don't do it! I have one exactly like it that I've had since the mid 60s. I turned down $1500 for mine, and never regretted it. I got mine new in the box, and today it still looks brand new. Like others are saying, keep your Browning, and just buy an assault rifle outright. There's a lot of assault rifles, but to you, there's only one of that Browning that you've had since you were 9 years old. You'll regret it later if you do get rid of it. It will never be worth less, always worth more. That's more than you can say for your money in the bank! "To anger a Conservative, lie to him. To anger a Liberal, tell him the truth." Theodore Roosevelt Glad to see you've decided to hang onto your gun. Your grandson would love to have it some day! I have my granddad's old JC Higgins model 20 12 Gauge, that I was with him when he traded a young heifer and her first calf for it from a neighbor. I was around 7 to 9 years old then, and still vividly remember that day.
  7. Thanks. I've been doing some of that Jethro Bodine "cyphering", and being an ex ol' aircraft rivet smasher, I'll probably get something cheap figured out. I have a press, and lots of shop tools, so I'll get it figured out somehow. I've got an Sk I can shoot in the meantime.
  8. Just ordered the FoxPro "Skyote" online. The blasted shipping was almost as much as the mouth call! The call was $19.95, and when the smoke cleared, my total bill was $35.51! Anyone familiar with this call? I figure with the learning curve, I should be able to drive everyone within miles nuts, by the time I get the hang of it. To anger a Conservative, lie to him. To anger a Liberal, tell him the truth! Theodore Roosevelt P.S. Got in touch with Foxpro, and was told they would correct my shipping fees. The new fees would be $6 instead of $15.56. Much better.
  9. Thanks Two Lane, At those prices I would have to pass. Don't suppose he has a rental unit, do you? They look sturdy enough that even a klutz would have a hard time damaging one. Even if one was damaged, he could charged for the damaged part, out of the deposit. I'd be interested in renting one, if the logistics weren't too complicated. Thanks again. Where is he located?
  10. Hope your friend gets it straightened out. I would have thought "ID theft" right away! Hope he's checked his credit card statements closely.
  11. Anyone willing to share techniques used to drive the front trunnion rivets? I'm concerned about marring the head. I'm familiar with bucking rivets in aircraft, but this has me a bit apprehensive. Has anyone used the heat the rivet and then buck it method? If so, did it work ok without blemishing the head? My kit is a Romy G, and I just want it to look good when it's finished. Thanks.
  12. Thank you for providing this video Chief. I only wish everyone could see it. We still have this metro attitude out there, that those of us who carry a weapon are rednecks, country bumpkins, KKK members, racist, right wing extremist, and all need to be wearing the tinfoil hats. I believe the liberal elite try to brand us with this stigma, but this video and book can do much to dispel that notion. From one retired CPO to another retired CPO, thanks for carrying on the good fight. To anger a Conservative, lie to him. To anger a Liberal, tell him the truth. Theodore Roosevelt
  13. Sorry Guntroll, I haven't been hunting them before. I'm just trying to get into hunting them, here in Tennessee. I figured the loads would be different than say if I were hunting them out west somewhere. Thanks to others that have shared their "recipes" for coyote loads.
  14. Would some of you yote hunters that reload share some of the best loads for coyotes in Tennessee. I'm particularly interested in the best hand loads for the .223 and .243 caliber round. I'm considering getting into hand-loading for these calibers, and am interested in the specifics of the following: 1. Best brass... is Federal or Winchester from WM ok? 2. Best primers... 3. Best Powder... and recipe for a good stable round. 4. Best Bullets... Brand, weight, shape, and nose configuration. The economy of doing this is a factor, as well as the accuracy of hand loads. Your opinions are appreciated. I'm really not interested in dangerous "hot" loads, just something better than factory loads. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
  15. Sidinman, I apologize for getting off thread, but I have decided I need the same gun you're shooting coyotes with. I'm running ads on TGO for one now. If you'd be willing, I have a lot of technical questions about the gun, ammo, and coyote hunting. I'm close, here in Murfreesboro, and appreciate your advice. Thanks.
  16. OS, I understand what you're saying, and share some of your cynicism. However, I hope "we the people" root out the RINOs in November, and restore true Conservatism to the Republican Party. IMHO, we must not fall for the same trick (remember Ross Perot?) that gave us 8 years of Bill Clinton, and destroyed our gun rights. Let's not split the ticket, as this would surely give us more Obama in our lives. I have faith in the "common sense" of the American people, and I think they're telling the Republicans, "you had better not be a RINO...because if you are, you're out on your butt". I hope we see Republicans run and serve from a Conservative posture.
  17. Thanks for the update guys. Glad to hear it's a good show. I'm not crazy about paying $10 as all I want is about one day. Day two is like watching a movie again, IMHO, unless you need to exchange something, and then I think there should be some leeway to go to the vendor for exchange. Hope there are a lot of people walking around with guns to sell. That's another of the reasons I go to gun shows. I'm still looking for that Savage .223!
  18. If this is the same show that was at the National Guard Armory in Murfreesboro a while back, I'll pass. There was not enough space to begin with, and a big portion of that space was occupied by only a couple of dealers. They mostly seemed interested in talking about selling you a gun, and didn't seem to have time to talk about parts, or other less expensive accessories. Worse gun show I had been to in years, IMHO. There were no kydex holster makers there, which was mainly why I went there in the first place. Maybe this one will be better. Anyone know exactly where this facility is located? Has anyone been yet, that could give us an update on the quality of the show? Thanks. I hope it's a good-un.
  19. Swampcat, you're definitely stirring up memories of days gone by. I used to do some of that kind of hunting back in the 60s, in Shelby County. Used to hunt up near Fort Story, North East of Millington, and over near Shelby Forrest. It's all probably subdivisions these days. There used to be some good quail hunting around there in those days. The farmers raised a lot of cotton, corn, and soy beans, all of which made good hunting for rabbits and birds...quail and dove. Hope you find a good location and get in some good "old fashioned" hunting...shotgun style.
  20. Sorry, I didn't see the date on the post. But, it's never too late to thank you for your service and to welcome you back home.
  21. Welcome back home Chief Smitty. Thank you for your service to our country. I don't have the answer, but I'm sure you've come to the right place. Someone on here, will no doubt, give you the latest skinny on the rules.
  22. Welcome Elwood. I think you'll find a great bunch of gun lov'in guys and gals on here that will make you feel right at home. I haven't been on here too long, and they were sure cordial to me. Just makes you feel good, and want to meet and shoot with them.
  23. From the "Goat Locker" this has been a pile of dog dung from the get go. This kind of crap causes our troops to second guess their moves, which slowes them down, and could get them killed! At least a trial in Iraq may prevent Chris Matthews or Wolf Blitzer from declaring them guilty on live TV, before the trial even begins. I believe most of the press coverage is bad news for our troops. We need to bring back the draft! Had these reporters and politicians served in the military, their attitudes would probably be much more favorable to the guys that protect our freedoms. The best to all my Navy Chief brotheren out there.
  24. It cost a lot to train good military men. Crap like this, is what causes them to get out early and take all of that training and experience right out the front gate with them. Then, the military has to start all over again with a brand new, green, recruit and train him to replace the trained and experienced one they lost to political correctness. As Michael Savage says, "We need less patten leather, and more George Patton. The politically correct politicians and media have caused our military leaders to try to "wimp down" our fighting forces. This is a bad thing. We play by the rules, and the enemy cuts our heads off, burns us, and drags us through their filthy streets! Where is the common sense these days? I say, get the politicians out of the front lines, and let the Generals and Admirals run the war. Also, require the press to be in uniform, just like they were in WWll, and require all information they want to send back be screened by the military brass. Our troops hate the embedded reporters, and do not trust them. Make them "War Correspondents", just like WWll with all the same rules, or get them out of the war zone. they hurt us more than they help us.
  25. I guess we all search for good, clean, TV these days. About all that seems to be left is the Andy Griffith Show on cable. We truly lived in the best of times, even though we didn't think so at the time.
