  1. I believe the rabbit (cotton tail) was also called "Hoover Hogs" during the depression, in the South... places like Louisiana and Mississippi.
  2. Bravo! Good job! Now that took some creative thinking... very funny. I hope everyone has had a very Merry Christmas.
  3. OK guys, Here's the latest on sending my Taurus PT-22 back for repairs. I sent it UPS last night around 6 PM, and it got there a little after 10AM today. With handguns, you ARE required to send it next day air... $48.15 with UPS last night. This was broken down as $40.50 for shipping, $3.60 for insurance, and $4.05 for fuel surcharge. As soon as I get the gun back, I'll give a report on the things I was concerned about. This may help someone else decide if they want to send theirs in for needed repairs.
  4. GunTroll, good advice. I have talked with them a while ago on another PT-22 I own, and was told they would trade "part for part". When I call, I'll ask about the missing parts. Thanks again. I may be better off to just send them the whole gun. Decisions _ Decisions.
  5. Thanks for the additional information. It looks like it would be a lot of fun. I was wondering about that "upsetting" possibility by a passing bass boat. That water is awfully cold when there's ice around the edges!
  6. Thanks for the information guys. I bought this one used, with broken (grips), missing (barrel release and safety spring and spring holder) from an individual, and have no idea how old it is. I've scanned lots of forums, and have had some say they were sent parts, no questions asked, but the date on most of the posts were pretty old. I feel confident I could replace the parts, but was afraid they might not supply , or even sell them to me. If anyone has been able to get any parts, other than grips, sent to them by Taurus lately, I'd sure like to know how you accomplished it. Thanks.
  7. Nice choice David. The only carry I do is a front pocket carry, with my KelTec P-11. I imagine it's about the same size. I had Gary Bowman (an expert craftsman) build me a "pocket carry" holster, very similar to the A-holster, and it works great in all type of pants pockets. Of course, the trick is to not carry anything else in the same pocket. I see it working great in a confrontation, where you already have your hand in your pocket, and on your gun. I experienced just such a confrontation last Christmas eve! Thankfully, I didn't have to draw, but could have done so very quickly. The man threatened to put a bullet through my head, but did not have any visible gun drawn! It was very comforting to know my hand was already on my weapon, and that I could have drawn and fired in a split second! I think you'll get used to it being there in your pocket quickly, and will have an extra sense of security knowing it can be drawn and fired very quickly, if need be.
  8. I have a Taurus PT-22 with broken grips, missing barrel release, swapped out safety with parts missing! Has anyone on here sent a handgun back to Taurus under their "Lifetime Warranty"? If so, here's some questions I have, before I send mine. 1. Does it have to be sent or received back through an FFL? 2. It sounds like there's going to be a minimum $35 fee... yes or no? 3. What was the turn around time on your gun? 4. I've heard they won't sell any parts to dealers or gunsmiths. Will they sell to the gun owner? 5. Was there a big hassle factor to it, or did it go pretty smooth? Thanks for any input. Also, if you know anyone that might have these parts, I'd be interested. Many thanks. Chuck in Murfreesboro.
  9. Nice duck hunting rig. I don't know anything about Kayaks, but this appears to be a different design. Would you mind telling us a little more about it? For instance, where could one get such a craft, and how much would a model like this cost? It appears it would be the cat's meow for an individual duck hunter that hunts alone on the lake, river, or duck pond. Thanks.
  10. Congratulations, and enjoyed reading your yote hunting story. I'm still waiting for that "first yote down" feeling. I'm counting on my Bushy AR-15 in .223, with the Winchester Varmint round to get the job done. hope you get the "bold" one that comes up on your porch, before he steals any more of your yard birds.
  11. I hope the TWRA, or someone gets it figured out before there are none to hunt at all. I would like to see an extensive study done in Tennessee on our quail situation. I'm sure most quail hunters would do pretty much what it takes to bring them back... whatever the problem.
  12. I've had good luck with Hoppe's No. 9 and four ought ( 0000) steel wool. Put a drop of Hoppe's and move the steel wool in a straight line. Do not use circular motions, as this can put swirls on the gun. After a couple of "light" passes, wipe it off with a clean soft cloth and see where you are. Repeat as necessary. Then, naturally apply some good grade gun oil. Take it easy... don't rub too hard! Only do this until you get the rust, and hopefully the shallow pit. Good luck. Hope you get to keep the gun... or your dad buys some ammo, so he can protect himself!
  13. I'd be curious at all of the opinions about what has wiped out most of the "wild" quail populations in Middle Tennessee. I've heard Coyotes, turkey, Red Tailed Hawks, Stray House Cats, and someone even mentioned Deer, don't understand that one. But what do all of you think happened? Just curious. I understand "Quail Unlimited" has all but shut down! It's terrible.
  14. 101, thanks, I'll take you up on that invitation, and i appreciate it very much. I'm available pretty much any time as I'm somewhat semi-retired. I've got a "spitfire" and some mouth calls, a MoJo Critter and Wiesel ball, rifles, shotguns, dove blinds and even a pop up blind! I'm looking forward to it. I've done quite a bit of research and studied lots of videos, and it looks like the "team" concept works better. You just say when,,, except for tomorrow afternoon, as I have a commitment I can't break from 5 to 7 PM. It's a benefit for a friend dying ( given 4 months about 2 months ago) from pancreatic cancer. You just say when. cjwaa1@msn.com
  15. WD-40, sounds like you hit the jackpot! Sure wish I had that scenario here in the Murfreesboro area. Was chatting with a couple at the Lascassas Fish Fry, just outside downtown metropolitan Lascassas last Saturday. He raises beef cattle, and has a pretty good size spread out that way. Says he has coyotes out there, but when I hinted I'd be glad to come out there and help him out with those yotes, he never offered an invitation. I did leave a business card as I left, and told him if he ever needed any help to let me know. So, who knows... maybe he will invite me out one of these days. He doesn't know me, so he might be afraid that I might shoot and hit one of his cattle. One can always hope! Right?
  16. I've been considering a bi-pod for my Savage Model 10 in .243. If it attaches to your sling swivel, is there an adapter for the sling, or do you have to choose between the sling or bi-pod? I love my Savage Model 10 .243... just wish I had one just like it in .223/5.56! Any preference between the short or longer bi-pods? I'll probably use mine more for hunting coyotes and deer. Thanks.
  17. Sidewinder

    a dove gun.

Just curious John, what kind of 20 gauge O/U were you shooting... barrel length and chokes? Thanks. We're just curious... and would love to see a pic of that over under. We love gun porn!
  18. Mine came from the fact that we had Sidewinder missiles on our F8 Crusaders, while aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Oriskany CVA-34, during the three deployments I made to the Tonkin Gulf (Viet Nam). That was back in the mid 60s. I started using it as a CB handle, when the CB rage and "Smokey and the Bandit" was the popular happening of the day. Even bought a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am to haul that cool CB around in. I even put the CB in my little puddle jumper airplane, using the call sign... Sidewinder. I realize there is a Sidewinder snake, but that is not the source of the "screen name"... that potent, heat seeking, Sidewinder missile is. Just think... not snake, missile.
  19. I went to the Murfreesboro Gun Show today trying to buy a Remington 1100 20 gauge Magnum with VR and Rem Chokes. I think there was only two Magnums in the building and one of the exhibitors had bought one of them before they let the general public in the door. Along the same lines, most "walk around" sales were gone in about 3 hours... most seemed to be going to the exhibitors, as they were seeking to buy them. The exhibitors I tried to deal with on the other four 1100 LTs that were there, were firm and set on price, and wasn't interested in negotiating. There was a good crowd at opening time, and it held til pretty well around mid afternoon... but most of the good stuff was gone by then. Overall, pretty good show, even if I didn't see a lot of guns being bought from the exhibitors by the public. Maybe they'll break out some new inventory tomorrow. But, I'd recommend you be there when the door opens if you're looking for something in particular.
  20. Concur with checking against the prices on Gunbroker.com. just one caveat, be sure you use the "completed" auctions. Many people ask a high price, and never get the first bid... and the auction closes. Others start at a low price, and put such a high "reserve price" that the bidders never get there and the auction closes. Use everything at your disposal, including the latest Gun Digest price catalog. Average them for comparable guns to yours, and you should get a pretty good idea. Gun prices seem to vary quite a bit, based on the region also. Guns in the North east will be higher than the same gun, say in Georgia or Texas. So, keep that in mind. Everyone seems to have a "rare" or "hard to find gun". Do a little research to see if they really are "rare" enough to fluctuate the price. Finally, if the gun is still in production, look to see what a brand new one sells for. you'll find some asking more for a used gun than what a new one sells for. A fair price is one that is fair to the seller, as well as the buyer. hope this helps, and good luck.
  21. Good score on the exclusive rights to coyote hunt the property. I believe that's the way "hunter/property owner" relationships are made... one good outcome at a time. I was dove hunting with friends on someone else's property yesterday, and noticed that previous hunters had left shell hulls laying around all over the place, and had even stuck a soft drink bottle (Coke bottle to us Southerners) on a cut corn stalk. I picked up all of my hulls I could find. I believe it's just a courtesy... I'll get off the stump now!
  22. Congrats 101, glad you got one, even though the weather has been brutal, and the ticks and chiggers just as brutal. What gauge, length and choke barrel are you using on the shotgun? I just bought another Remington 1100, 12 gauge, 28" Improved Cylinder barrel this afternoon... for a possible close in yote shotty. My other 1100 is a Modified choke, in 12 gauge, which might be better. I'll bet the farmer was glad to see one less coyote running around hungry on his farm. Where did you get the Hevi Shot Dead Coyote around here in the B'oro... Dick's? Good job... thanks for the pic. Looks like a pretty nice pelt too, for Tennessee.
  23. I've been viewing some coyote hunting sites which offer some live videos of stands and called in coyotes. Trouble is, they're all out west where a yote can be seen three to four hundred yards out. Does anyone know of any similar sites that have tips and live videos about hunting coyotes here in the eastern US? Thanks.
  24. Congrats on the Camp 9... good looking gun. Hope you enjoy it. Mine is burning up on the side of my brass with WWB, but less with Federals from WM. Have you noticed any burn marks on the outside of your fired brass? Thanks.
  25. I have a question about burn marks on the side of my fired brass. These burn marks are pretty extensive, going about half way up the side of the case. It appears to be doing it in the same clock position as each round is fired. This is factory loads and not hand loads. The burn marks are more prominent on Winchester White Box 9mm Luger from Wal -Mart than it is on Federal 9mm Luger factory ammo from WM. The Marlin Camp 9 is a "blow back" action, almost identical to the Ruger 10/22. At the recommendation of many Camp 9 owners on the forums, I replaced the recoil spring (11 lbs) with a 16.5 pound spring, I'm considering replacing that spring with a 21 pound spring. I'm interested in comments about why this is happening. None of the shell casings are split, but burned pretty bad. I thought that possibly there was a chamber irregularity, but the Federal brass is not burned as bad. Any Smiths with an opinion? Thanks.
