  1. Dolomite, I have two or three cheap red dots laying around that I might try just for grins. I'll probably have to spend some time in the field and woods to decide if I want anything, other than the factory iron sights. My old eyes might need a little help... we'll see how they do on Mr. Squirrel, or Brer Rabbit. Initially, I was thinking crosshairs and magnification, but thanks to the hands on experience of the informative TGOers I've kinda side tracked that idea.
  2. Lawvol, thats a nice piece you have there. The Fastfire looks impressive, but just might be a tad over my budget. I like the clarity of that dot. I doubt it would be affected from glare behind as much as a regular scope. BTW, thanks for the links. I'll check them out, even if "window shopping" is all I can afford to do right now.
  3. Thanks PackinMama, that price range is more to my liking than the uber high priced scopes. It'll be interesting to see what affect the sun behind you has if any. Do you mount yours with a set of quick release rings on your Hunter? If so, have you noticed any sighting problems after taking them off and putting them back on?
  4. Hipower, I also prefer the crosshair to a red dot. Maybe I'm "old school", but I remember when crosshair was the only choice. That said, the old eyes don't see as well as they once did, so maybe I had better go with the red dot. Were you doing any in woods hunting with yours, or mostly target shooting?
  5. Jonnin, I had hoped to be able to do some small game hunting with this pistol. I'd also like to use it to punch some holes in paper, tin cans, hedge apples, bottle caps, or whatever. For the limited range of the .22LR out of this 6 7/8" barrel, I doubt any magnification would be necessary. I have a .357 Magnum Blackhawk, but plan to keep the open iron sights on it.
  6. Jeff43, what kind of gun do you have your Millet Red Dot SP-1 on? Also, do you use it for target shooting or hunting? I've heard that bright sun tends to wash out a small red dot, when the sun is behind you. What have your experiences been in this area... any problems?
  7. Spikehunter, others have also suggested the red dot. If you're shooting with the sun behind you, do you have a problem sighting in on your game/target due to the glare/mirror effect?
  8. Cannoncocker, thanks for the insight on scopes for my Ruger MK lll Hunter. I was worried about that eye relief distance, as I had planned on shooting 0ff hand, in the field and woods. I am also worried about the glare behind me in the scope lens...the mirror effect. For instance, if you're shooting with the sun behind you, can you readily see the red dot or crosshairs?
  9. Timestepper, I hunted forever before I finally found a .357Mag/20Gauge. Paid way more than I wanted to for it. But the guy that was selling it, was selling it for a guy in a rest-home, dying of cancer, and he needed some money to pay some medical bills. I feel good about the purchase, and love the gun... in fact, I bought a .357Mag Ruger Blackhawk as a hunting companion to it.
  10. Wish I had a parts gun that looked and shot like that. My parts guns have been absent receivers for a long time. Can't seem to find any used ones reasonably priced. With Wal-Mart selling a brand new, unfired, Ruger 1022 for $234.00, it's about as cheao just to buy a new gun. I've got most parts for two guns, one stainless, but no receivers.
  11. I have the CMMG conversion, and it works fine in my Bushmaster. I have heard of them seizing, if not kept clean though. Mine is not stainless, so I keep it clean before and after I shoot it.
  12. +1 on the JB Weld! That stuff can weld anything but a broken heart and the crack of dawn!
  13. Anyone have any experience with the Ruger 1022 "Takedown" models, as far as accuracy is concerned? Once sighted in, does taking it down and putting it back together a few times change the accuracy? Anyone got one? If so, what do you think about it (the design and functionality), and do you think it fills the bill for what Ruger designed it to do?
  14. Price sounds reasonable enough. Thanks for the offer of providing the contact information, but I think I'll just leave mine original for now. I have three other Rugers, a Standard, MK ll Target, and a MK lll Hunter, so I'm thinking about trading this one.
  15. Garufa & Graycrait, The ones Numrick and Amozon have are strips of metal bent into the shape of a trigger guard. The one that came off my Savage Model 24 appears to have been cast aluminum metal. I was just thinking someone that knows their way around a machine shop could probably knock one of these out from a thick aluminum bar stock in no time. I had a friend, that had a friend, with access to a CNC milling machine... but, he wanted $159 an hour!   The guy out at the Triune Saddle Shop, told me he once saw a man make one from the handle of a silver spoon. He said it looked beautiful, with the scroll work already on it. I'm trying to go back with the original style, and material. I've been hitting some gun shops that may have had some gunsmithing going on at one time.   Thanks for your replies... I'm still looking for one.

Safeandsecure, I got my Super Comanche through Bud's Gun Shop. Have you seen the one where the guy ground down the rear sight, and put wood grips on it. Looks like something right out of "Lonesome Dove", that Ole Gus would have hanging on his hip.
  17. Thanks for the link Mdunntn. I watched enough of it to realize it was above my paygrade too! I got the heebie jeebies just thinking what I could do with one slip of that Dremmel tool! Is there in frame nuts so that you can change out the grips if you want to? Is the cost reasonable, or is it something you'd rather not disclose? They sure look good, though. Thanks.
  18. I'd be interested to hear more about how the grip mod was done. I have one just like it with the fixed grips. Thanks.
  19. Update...Yep, decided to bite the bullet, when told where a brand new one was in a local store. Bought it, shot it, wish I could have bought it for less, but happy that I have it.
  20. +1 on the grips. I have a MKlll 22/45 like that also... but it looks like yours probably did before you did the grips.
  21. Apology accepted Tanker. Just hope all of the parts are there for your gun, and that it functions as expected. Good hunting with it.
  22. Anyone ever been sitting in a blind, ground or tree-stand, and have ole Wiley Coyote come walking by...whereupon your trusty Ruger Std., MKl, MKll, or MKlll gave him a dirt nap? If there's any "bayou boys" out there, I'll bet someone has used one of these fine firearms to whack a gator! Anybody got any pics of their interesting game that they took with their Ruger .22LR pistols?
  23. Trevorst, I'm lucky enough to have one of the MK lls also. Mine is a 6" bull barrel Target model. So far, the only thing I've killed with it is some bark spots on a tree, and some spots on a dead tree log. Haven't had it long, but really like it. Did you carry yours in a holster in the woods, or just stuffed into a hunting coat/vest? Mine has the adjustable rear sight, but is not drilled for a scope mount.
  24. You've got to watch them... I hear they can be pretty stealthy...they don't make a sound for you to hear them. I've also heard they are impossible to call in...even with a Primos call. I heard that one is the limit at most hunting places. They say a taxidermist won't touch them...so you can just forget the wall mount. Bet they don't taste like chicken either.
  25. Trying to figure this out. There has only been 6 replies. Does that mean there are only 6 people on TGO that own the Ruger MK lll Hunter, or that only 6 people hunt something other than paper with theirs? Or... are people shy about talking about their "small game" hunting experiences, these days? Come on folks... I want to hear the one about the guy that killed an 800 pound bear with his MK lll Hunter, while squirrel hunting! Naturally, the bear was on the attack, so it was in self defense!
