  1. Sorry to hear about your wife's illness. Prayers for your wife...and you and your family. Hope the Doc finds the problem and fixes it soon.
  2. I met a lady about a week ago that Dr Ming Wang had put the regular (single focal) in one eye, and the Forever Young (multi-focal) lens in the other! Talk about messing her head up...big time! She said he tried several times, but never got it right. Finally, she was too concerned to go back! Cost her big bucks, and she's now wearing glasses. Hope your doctor does a better job. I've heard lots of good stories from others that have had theirs done elsewhere. I'm considering going to Dr. Loden, to see if he can straighten out my right eye. If he can, he'll be the one doing the cataract surgery on my left eye.
  3. Shawn, I don't think they allow firearms there, do they? Or were you talking of another area around there, other than the park?

Thanks Lester Weevils, I'll give the acetone a try.
  5. Buck 1032, I left a message for you at the first link you posted. I'm an old "airdale" too. Was aboard the USS Oriskany CVA-34, with VF-162, for three deployments into the Tonkin Gulf (Viet Nam) in the early to mid 60s. Knew lots of ADRs and ADJs, over the years. I just thought I probably should have PM'd you. Sorry for the thread trashing. Sounds like this guy, Laughter, is John Kerry's first cousin! Remember, how Kerry claimed medals he didn't have...and look where he is today! Hope they nail this guy to the wall of the brig. I'd enjoy hearing from you to discuss old times.
  6. That looks nice! I'll trade you my BB gun for your BB pistol! LOL. Tell us about this beautiful (9mm Luger?). Wish I had one.
  7. Like I've said, I've ordered the Crosman 2240 .22 Cal Co2 powered pistol. According to some forum folks, it's about the most modded air gun on the planet! I like that, and plan to do a couple of mods myself to improve it's performance. I'm considering the receiver mod, so I can put a scope on it. There are some really good U-tube videos on these mods, but I was wondering if anyone on here has that specific model...and if so, have you done any of the mods? I was actually interested in the results of those mods. Also, they say the Co2 models don't work very well in colder temps. Looks like that would make it useless for winter hunting.
  8. I had right eye cataract, astigmatism, and a Mittendorf Dot surgery with Dr. Ming Wang in Nashville. Some good, some bad! Overall, I'm disappointed in the results. I can do 20/15 in his office. But, when looking through that right eye, it looks as though I'm looking through dirty or smudged glass. My right eye is my shooting eye. I'm also a pilot and have voluntarily kept myself grounded since the surgery, that was two years ago in January. I did not go with the "Forever Young" lens, as they were $5000 above insurance for each eye! With the complications, I'm still almost $4000 out of pocket expense on my right eye. I will not let him touch my left eye! I feel something went wrong on his end, and he's not making good on it. I have encountered others with the same story. He's supposed to be the best... but, it didn't turn out that way for me. Buyer beware...as they say!
  9. Ugly, according to a video I just watched on U-tube, how the break barrel/spring action pellet guns are held greatly affects the accuracy. He showed five shots using what he called the "artillery hold", and put all shots inside the bull's eye...all holes were touching! Then he put the gun in a gun vise and fired five shots, and none were even close to the bull's eye...they were all over the place! I have a Gamo break barrel and have wondered about it jumping around when fired. Apparently, it needs to be allowed to recoil without on it's own, with a very light touch, for extreme accuracy.
  10. By the way, after a few years of idleness, I had to reseal my Sheridan Blue Streak. I bought a reseal kit, and did it myself. No "O" rings...lead rings! Now it shoots fine, and will take 5 to 8 pumps. I ordered my Crosman 2240 .22 Cal. Co2 powered through Wal-Mart.Com yesterday afternoon, and paid for it at my local store. If any of you are in the Murfreesboro area, where do you buy your "Pel-Gun oil" locally?   I've enjoyed reading the post thus far, and imagine others have too. Hope everyone will keep up the exchange of information. It looks like "Zombies Fear Me" has a hunting buddy for life! Lucky man.

    Painting sights

I have a revolver that I'd like to get the paint off of. The front sight has serrations and is white, and the rear sight is red. What do you folks use to remove the paint, that won't harm the bluing? Paint thinner? Acetone? Mineral Spirits? Turpentine? Grandpa's coffee? Just kidding Gramps! I just want the sights back original. I'm afraid I may have to retouch with some cold bluing afterwards. Anybody been through this? If so, please share the information. Thanks.
  12. Please understand, I am not singing the reseller's song. But...there is a flip side to that coin. Case in point...I went to a local Wal-Mart at around 5 PM tonight. Didn't know if there was any .22s coming in or not. But... I did know one thing...if I didn't take the time to be there when they came out, if there was any, I would not get any.   I was number one in line, and knew if there was any coming in, I'd have a shot at them. I have a bad back, and my lower back was killing me...plus, I'm one of the old geezers some of the people on here ridicule. Again, understand, I do not resell my ammo, I shoot it. At about 7:20 a well dressed man came by and I had seen him there before. He asked me if I'd sell him a box, so his grandson could go to the range and shoot his gun that he got for Christmas. I think I remember him saying that once before...at least once, maybe more. Anyway, I told him I had been waiting there since before 5 PM, and that after waiting all that time, I did not sell any of the ammo I was lucky enough to get. He even offered me $50 for a box, and I declined the offer.   Had he joined the line at that time, he would have been number four. We said they'll know for sure, and have the ammo out in a little over an hour from now. He walked off, like he was too important, or too impatient, to wait for 45 minutes to an hour. Turns out, a lot of .22LR ammo came in...at least a case of Federal 550 Value Packs, a case of Remington 225 round packs, and possibly more. By this time there were a number of people in the waiting line. Had "Mr. Impatient" taken his number four spot in line, he would have gotten at least one Federal 550 Value Pack, and two Remington 225 round boxes...or possibly two Federal 330 round boxes...for a total of at least 1050 rounds of .22LR! I wonder if he'll be on here bashing the "hoarders and resellers" tomorrow?   Folks, the bottom line is this...if you want .22LR ammo, you "can" get it. No way, are you going to walk up to the counter and say I'll take three boxes of the Federal 550 round Value Pack, and get it. Maybe sometimes, but not very often. Nor can you show up at Wal-Mart at 8:15 PM, and expect to get any .22LR that they will put out at 8:30 PM. It works like anything else with a limited supply... concert tickets come to mind, or Titans home game tickets...if you want it bad enough, be prepared to spend some time waiting in line...or buy it at the gun shows, at their price.   Like I said, I'm not defending the resellers ( again... I do not resell mine), any more than I'd defend ticket scalpers at the concert or football game. But consider there are only two ways to get those tickets...wait in line, or pay the price. I'm just saying. Good luck on getting tickets to the next big concert, or Titan's game.
  13. I've got pistols, I've got rifles, and I've got shotguns, but enjoy shooting pellet guns...and it's cheaper! I have a Gamo break barrel in .177 cal and a Sheridan Blue Streak pump action in .5mm/.20Cal. But just ordered a Crosman 2240 in .22 Cal. This is the Co2 powered version. I've done some research, and these things have been modded to run the cost up to unbelievable! I'm hoping to do a little pest control with it in the stock condition...right out of the box...or blister pack. Money is tight these days...unless it's spent on something that goes bang!   I'd like to get a good discussion going in this thread, about the rifles, pistols, mods, hunting experiences, best brands by field proof, maybe even a confession or two, from people that like to shoot pellet guns, but didn't want their shooting buddies to know.   To start the thread rolling, I'd like to hear about actual experiences with this Crosman 2240 .22 Cal. C02 pellet pistol from anyone. Anyone done any small game hunting with one of these? I've got to dispatch some pigeons...how far can I expect to take the shot from?
  14. RC3...Now you've stirred our curiosity! Yeah, we all know about that cat thing... but we want to know what it is that you're "assembling"! Pics would be great too.
  15. Thanks Westwindmike, this is good information to know, and seems to cover all of the mysteries of the Contender, G2, and Encore.
  16. Patotn, did they happen to mention if the old barrels would fit and function on the newer G2 and Encore?
  17. Westwind Mike, Thanks for the advice. It sounds like you you may have nailed the problem. I'll check out the Greybeard link too. I figured it had to be something simple.   R_Bert, It's doing it on an empty chamber. I'm not real keen on monkeying around with a loaded chamber inside the house...especially one that the hammer may fall at any minute! It acts like it tries to catch...but, I can feel it slip off. I'm thinking WestwindMike might be on the right trail.   Seez52, It has the single piece lug on this .30-30 barrel. The 7-30 Waters barrel that I bought at the same time, has the split lug and it works just fine.   For Everybody...I'm still wondering how the later G2 and Encore barrels can be identified. Let's say there are two identical barrels laying there on the table, one for the early model Contender, and one for the later G2 and Encore...how would a person be able to tell the difference? Are they marked in any way, or do you just have to mount them on the early Contender frame to see if they work? Thanks to all three of you for your help.
  18. I recently bought a .30-30 Super 14 barrel, with front and rear sights, that looks brand new. I put it on my early model Contender frame, and when I pull the hammer back, it won't always cock or stay cocked. I've re-opened the barrel several times, and even slammed it shut a time or two, but it didn't help.   I will not do any modifications to the barrel, for fear of screwing it up, as I'm thinking this barrel may be for the later model Contender G2 or Encore. What do you guys think?   If... this barrel is for a G2 or Encore, are there any markings on the barrel that will identify it as such? How can a person tell the difference from a Super 14 barrel designed for an early model Contender, and a Super 14 barrel designed for the G2 or Encore? If this barrel is designed for a later model Contender, I'll just trade it for something else that will fit my older Contender.   Thanks for your help.
  19. I have access to a relatively small strip of woods and open fields on a friend's farm in the Murfreesboro area. All toll, I think there's about 150 to 180 acres involved. I'd be most appreciative of advice from someone that has experience hunting in the "woods" setup. I would like to use my "Spitfire" e-caller, and a mouse squeaker. The trees are mostly tall, mature, hardwoods, with quite a bit of undergrowth...can't see very far on the ground.   How would you setup, what gun would you choose, and how often would you use the same setup?   There's houses just outside one side of the woods strip. I also have a MoJo bunny decoy I can use.   Give me your best hypothetical set up for taking the yotes from this area. Thanks.
  20. Thanks for all of the information. It sounds like the 7TCU should make a great hunting round. Hope you get to try it out...and post some pics of the hunt here on TGO.
  21. I've heard some say they only "neck size" some of these wildcat rounds. I've never tried neck sizing, but may, when I reload some of my .22 Hornet, due to the thin brass. Were you neck sizing, or full length sizing these TCU rounds? Anyway, thanks for all the information on the 7mm TCU. I hope I didn't pester you too much.
  22. Seez52, why are all of the necks black? Is this from "neck sizing" a few times, or the dies from regular re-loading? Did the silhouette shooting phase out...kinda like the CB radio, or is it still active in this area? I like the idea of the .223 brass being plentiful. Did any ammo manufacturer ever make the 7 TCU round? Being that we're practically next door neighbors, I'd sure like to shoot one of your 7 TCU rounds, if we're ever in the same shooting woods or range.
  23. Don't go to any trouble...I was just curious. Lots of open space out in west Texas to enjoy all kinds of hunting. I just like the .223 base cartridge as a reloading platform. No problem with carrying a hand full in the woods for hunting.
  24. I have been down to Owl Hollow a couple of times, and really enjoyed it. It was just a meet up of TGO (Tennessee Gun Owners) folks ( I was a guest) to just do some unorganized shooting, have a sack lunch, and just visit with each other. Fun time, and great people for sure. Mine is a Contender frame also...even though I'm keeping an eye out for a Encore pistol frame. I have four barrels, one of which is a 10" .223 octagon barrel with open sights. I'm hoping to replace it with a 14" barrel and a scope. I have a .22 Hornet barrel, also 10" with a scope that will handle Mr Squirrel.   I imagine the 14" .223, with a decent scope should be just about the ultimate in varmint hardware. I'll keep looking. Sounds like you may have done a pretty convincing job of selling the Contender to your friend as a serious game getter. It would be interesting to see if he takes an interest in the Contender platform for use on his place.
  25. Seez52, I appreciate you posting the pics of your loaded ammo. Sounds like you had a lot of fun shooting competition targets. Did you do that around Lebanon, or somewhere else?  Sounds like you were pretty good to hit 38 out of 40 too. Did you have open sights on the 14" barrel? I have a 10" .223 with open sights, and it's pretty handy...not too barrel heavy. Were you shooting a Contender or Encore frame? I'm basically trying to figure out what three or four barrels will cover the full range of hunting...not bear, moose, or elk, mostly through white tail deer.   Frankmaco, do you remember what your loads were running through the chronograph? Sounds like the 7 TCU was a pretty useful round for lots of hunting stuff in west Texas. Was the deer in close, or was it a decent distance shot? I keep researching it, and it seems like a lot of the same bullets can be used for the TCU and the 7x30 Waters. Were you getting quite a few reloads before the cases started to crack?
