  1. Wow! You did have your work cut out for you, didn't you? How did it turn out? I'm thinking, lots of elbow grease, and probably money too, to make her proud again!
  2. Great heirloom gun! I'm sure it's something that will be passed down through more generations. What a legacy for your dad. Would love to see a pic of it, when you're done with it, if it's convenient. I have my granddad's old J.C. Higgins Model 20 12 gauge pump gun, and cherish it as though it was an expensive gun. He used to take me hunting with him, when I was too young to own a gun, with this gun. Made me step in his foot steps, so the dry leaves wouldn't make noise. Great memories.
  3. Alleycat, sounds like a fun small game setup. Do you have a scope on yours, or do you just shoot iron sights. I might start looking for one of these. What kind of price do you think I could find one for? I'm guessing this gun uses and internal box mag...if so, how many rounds. I'm also thinking the round could be reloaded with a different bullet than a flat nose...being it's not going in a tubular magazine. What else have you taken besides coyotes with it?
  4. Seez52, do you reload the 25/20 round? Some say it's tricky because of the thin case. Out of your Winchester 92, what range would you say the round is effective at...50 yards, 75 yards...or even 100 yards?
  5. kckndrgn, it's possible...there's a video of a guy taking a doe at short range on u tube. Does your Marlin have an octagon barrel? Have you shot it? Might be a good coyote round?
  6. Thanks for the listing Greg. Have you shot one of these? Looking at the dates, I'm thinking some of these weapons are pretty pricey. I had read that it is the .32-20 case, necked down. I just like odd guns and odd rounds...some of them at least.
  7. Alley cat, I'd be interested in hearing more about your Savage 23 that shoots this round. What do you use it for? Have you taken a deer with it, or is it too light for that, even at close range. Is it a hundred yard round for something like coyotes?
  8. It's loose, so it's hard to say. I'm considering trying to find an affordable gun that shoots it.
  9. Found some old .25-20 ammo, and would like to know what guns it was shot in. The big ammo guys still sell it, so it must be shot in some current firearms. Anybody know if there's a Contender barrel chambered in the round? How about a bolt action? I believe the round is a necked down .32-20. Anybody currently shooting it? Looks kinda light for a deer round. Some of the ammo is cased hollow point, and some is semi cased, with a lead nose that is flat.
  10. Now the Savage 242, that I'm talking about here, is an over under shotgun in .410. You may be thinking about the Savage 24, which is a combo gun with a rifle caliber on top of a shotgun barrel in .410, 20Ga. or 12Ga..I have some of the Savage 24s, and my savage 242 .410/.410 barrel will fit one of my Savage 24s that's chambered in .30-30/20 Ga..
  11. Graycrait, that's an unusual Savage 24. Most have done their duty, because when they came out, they were a cheap utility "meat on the table" gun. Of course, most guns were that when I was a kid. I don't think I ever owned more than a box of shells at any one time.
  12. Yea, I'll keep looking for one. I have a .22 Hornet barrel for my TC Contender.
  13. K191145, mine came with a pistol grip, in case you'd like to remove the buttstock, for a home defense weapon.   In fact, mine is a lot of fun to shoot...but, I'm considering trading it for a Savage 24 chambered in .22 Hornet / 20 gauge, if I can find one. it would have to be a nice one, as my Circuit Judge is like new in the box, with a very low round count. I might just keep the Circuit Judge, and buy the .22 Hornet outright, if I could find a real nice one. I hate to part with the Circuit Judge, as it's so much fun, and I have over $500 in the package. But, I would part with it, if that's what it took to get that nice .22 Hornet / 20 Gauge, Savage 24 combination gun I want.
  14. Will Carry, mine does not have a donut hole, with the .410 choke tube installed. Are you talking about the Judge? I'm not sure, but don't think it has changeable choke tubes. The .410 choke tube in the Circuit Judge, stops the shot from spinning in the rifle lands. Mine shoots a good pattern with bird shot.
  15. I'm not sure where you're located in TN, but the Old Fort Wal-Mart, in Murfreesboro, had a bunch of 100 round boxes of Federal FMJ on the shelf tonight, for around $40...before taxes.
  16. For a good, clean, family movie I believe  "Courageous" is one of the best. Good for the parents... good for the kids.
  17. I agree with quietmike. Lonesome Dove is my favorite. Ole Gus had life figured out... at least the part that affected him.
  18. Luke E, I see you're here in the B'oro. If you have a place to shoot, I'd be glad to bring my Circuit Judge over and let you shoot it.   I was told by a well known gunsmith in these parts, that a shot of a certain size, fired out of a .410 has the same pellet energy of the same size shot, at the same distance. He said all things being equal, the .410  shot will hit game just as hard as a 12 gauge shot at the same distance...but that there's just less pellets (shot). Interesting thought, even though I have 12 and 20 gauge guns also. Just thought I'd throw that in, for those concerned about the power of the .410 in the field.
  19. I went out and shot mine some yesterday. I shot # 7 1/2 and # 8 bird-shot, from a 2 1/2 " shells. I fired 6 rounds, 2 each at 15 yards, 20 yards, and 25 yards. These were shot at 10" paper plates. The shot patterns were good out to 20 yards, with these low power shells. I didn't have any 3" shells with me.   I changed out the choke tubes, and shot 10 rounds of .45 Colt (Long Colt) factory ammo. All shots were with open sights at 45 yards. The accuracy was good. I've had eye surgery on my right (shootin' eye), but still was pleased with the off-hand shooting accuracy.   I can't wait to get to the range, where the environment is set up properly to shoot and test loads and my scope on it. I'm happy with it so far. Might even make a close in deer gun...brush gun.
  20. Anybody got one of these neat little Savage 242 over/unders? Does it have a story back to grandpa? What do you use it for? Was it your first gun as a kid? Sure would like to see some pics, and hear some hunting stories with these little guns. Anyone ever took a deer with one.... with slugs? Probably a good little squirrel or rabbit gun...and grouse for those that have them. I have a brand new barrel set...new old stock, that's unfired. I'm looking for a receiver and buttstock. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have other Savage 24 Models, that this barrel set will fit. So, I can use the barrel set on them, if I have to. Please post some good pics, if you have one of these little jewels. Thanks. Looking forward to seeing them, and hearing the stories.
  21. 79troublehead, thanks for your response. You're the only one that did! I own one in a .22 Mag / 20 Ga, but also wanted one in a .22 Hornet. I own seven or eight of these guns in various calibers/gauges, and like them very much. Just want to add the "Hornet" to my collection.
  22. Well, good or bad...I now own one of them, so I'll find out first hand. I have done some research, and supposedly the gun is pretty accurate with the .45LC, but not the .410 slugs. Something about that difference in dimension of a .45 & .410, allowing smaller .410 slug to slop around on it's way down the barrel...and then go any which way on exit. There are some you-tube vids of people using it for the bunnies with dogs. Some have indicated it might work as a tree rat harvester.   To me, it's a fun gun to plink around with. I have all of the hunting and target shooting bases covered with other guns, so the utility of this little jewel is yet to be determined. It has a 4X32 scope that I may take off and use the fluorescent tube sights, green on the rear sight & red/orange on the front. Look out tin cans...here I come!
  23. Thanks for the link xjsnake. I noticed that Tennessee was one of the three states mentioned as having reports of the tick borne virus!
  24. Oh Shoot, as I've already stated in other posts here, I'm sorry to have stated something that was, apparently, not accurate. I was merely saying what I had read, much like a person reports what they had seen or heard in a TV news broadcast. I'll admit, I'm pretty uninformed when it comes to the laws, and intent of the laws, surrounding the FFL form discussed here. All I was doing was trying to draw attention to the fact that the Supreme Court had acted...and I didn't think they had gone to all of that trouble to try to improve our rights under the Second Amendment. I was hoping other TGO members would check into it....and apparently they did. I consider that as a good thing.   I'm sorry for any misinformation I have posted, as a result of inaccuracies in the article. Next time I feel froggy...maybe I should do more research before I leap.
