Greg, I agree 100%. I'm not going to touch any of my .22 Hornet Chambers. Some information stated that the gain was only about 40 fps! Thanks for your advice.

Clod Stomper, sounds like your granddad was a great man. I can tell he left some very honorable character traits in you, from those early years. You were lucky to have him around to impart his wisdom and integrity for those few years. I had a few more years with mine, and I'm very thankful for every one of them. You're absolutely right. The old JC Higgins is probably the least valuable (in money) gun I have, but I wouldn't part with it. Yea, I think you're right on the modifying of a chamber too. Upon second thought, common sense kicked in about who was the most qualified and knowledgeable about such things...the manufacturer.

Stumpy & Clod Stomper, deep down inside, something was telling me to just leave well enough alone. Or as my sweet little granny used to say. "Let a sleeping dog lie". She was a wise lady...born in the late 1800s, and I respected her advice. Likewise, I respect you guys advice, and have decided to just leave all of my 22 Hornets as they are. Clod Stomper, I'm glad you got your granddad's gun. I have my granddad's old J.C. Higgins Model 20, 12 gauge, pump gun in my closet. he was born in 1882 and taught me a lot about hunting, and life in general. Thank you guys for your good advice. I'm sorry it has taken me so long to respond...somehow, I lost the post.

Hopefully, dove hunting will be a lot better after the grain crops are harvested, and the spillage grain is on the ground.

A salute, to Luke E. and many thanks for putting me in a couple of dove hunts that got the ole adrenaline pumping and revealed how rusty I was on wing shots. Even with the embarrassment of so many dead doves flying away...I still had a great time, and enjoyed the excellent company. It was good to have a reason to clean my gun from a "real" hunt, and not just from clays or paper. Thanks Luke. 

Agree, Raoul... but thought we could let him know we're feeling sympathy for his loss. Nothing we can say will fill that void...but I believe it's good to know friends are thinking about you at a time of such personal loss.

Just got off of the phone with David and he's pretty sad. Lost his dog that he's had since it was two days old! Said he brought it home in his shirt pocket, and fed it with an eye dropper. So, I'll bet all of us can cheer him up a little by posting our sympathies for the loss of his well loved dog. Many of us have lost a dog at one time in our lives, and know it can be like loosing a family member. rhanks55, where did you get the lantern? Is it gas or kerosene fired. How about the cost of one? Do you have to change the blue pad like on the cell?

Thanks Wiljo05, that's good information to know. I have two of them, and have used mine inside a pop up ground blind, but was afraid the coyotes might smell it out in the open. What ammo do you use in your shotty? I can go up to 3 1/2" shells, but usually only take a rifle, as I hunt alone. Do you sell the hides...any good enough? They are pretty mangy looking here in middle and west Tennessee.

Another thing I've noticed on the two dove hunts I was lucky enough to have been invited on, is that the doves seemed to be smaller than the normal doves we see around middle Tennessee. Anyone else notice this? Also, I've not heard of anyone saying they have seen a lot of doves in the fields they have hunted. Could it be that the warm weather has kept them up north, and that the real migration has not really started yet? All opinions are welcome.

Was in the Smyrna Academy Sports about three hours ago, They had 26+ boxes of the Remington Golden Bullet 50 round count for, I believe, $4.99. They also had good 35 to 50 boxes of Aguilla (SP?) in the 50 round boxes for about, again I think it was around $4.99 a box.

Did anyone go dove hunting yesterday? Cooler air coming in may have brought the doves down from up North. Cooler air mass coming in next week... may make for some extra good dove hunting. Also, I think there may still be a lot of uncut Corn and Milo in the fields. Sure would be nice to get some updates from different areas around Murfreesboro, and Middle Tennessee.

Thanks for the information. David is going to try to get me some next week. I'd rather buy from him, and support a fellow TGO'er, than I had to buy from MidSouth and do the shipping ditty. Hopefully, his price on them will be competitive with them. Have to stretch the old dollar these days!

I wanted to go, but only needed some 45 gr soft point bullets to reload some .22 Hornet. Called David and he said he didn't have any. He's going to try to get some this coming week. So, life is good! Weather is supposed to cool down next week, so maybe the next show will be more comfortable.

David thought he had some in his private stash...but just got off the phone with him, and none. He did bring up something interesting though. I'm thinking "all" .22 Hornets are .224 diameter. He says for the lighter 45 grain, soft point bullets, they could be .223 or .222 in diameter. I hadn't thought about it much. I guess I was just thinking .224. I'm shooting them out of TC Contender barrels...one 10" and the carbine a 21". Any thoughts? Do you remember the diameter on the .22 Hornets you loaded?

Buck1032, I'm with you...Navy retired also, and not one tattoo. Early on, one of my shipmates had a sexually offensive tat removed from his forearm. Left ugly scars. No lasers during those days. To each his or her own, but wish they would consider how that tattoo may affect their lives later on in life.

Did you have any problems finding the downed birds, or did you have a dog? Where Luke E. and I were hunting, some downed some in standing corn, and could not find them.

Thanks Luke, for an enjoyable day in the dove field. Even if we didn't get to do a lot of shooting, nor see a lot of birds, it was still fun. I enjoyed listening to the volley of gunfire when a bird ventured into other parts of the field! I knew right then I wouldn't have to be too embarrassed when I missed on a shot. Like you said, I believe the heavy rains, just before opening day, played a big part in the scarcity of birds. Enjoyed it anyway...thanks again.

Is the parent brass for the 218 Bee the same as the 22 Hornet, or is it .223 brass? It could be handy at the shooting bench, if you had a private setting. Could be distracting at a rushed shooting range.

Gregintenn, I may load some on the Rock Chucker later. I've never re-loaded anything with brass this thin before, and I thought I'd like the portability. Doubt I'll be re-loading at the range, but may move around a little locally.
