Thanks to all who responded. I saw the guy that owns the ammo, and apparently he's done some research. He says it's 8mm Mauser.
-
Sorry, I looked at it in his driveway and left. I didn't take a pic. What you say may very well be what it is.
-
Gregintenn, I don't have any of the ammo to take a pic. But, I did look at the head stamp under magnification and it's 7.92, not 7.62. It's a large round, with a spire point, FMJ, bullet.
-
A friend told me he had some old ammo that I might be interested in. He wasn't exactly sure of what it was. Thinking it was probably 7.62 x 39, I went over to his place to check it out. At first glance, I thought it was 30-06. But the head stame revealed it was 7.92 x 42mm. It's brass cased and quite old. What gun shoots this kind of ammo? Looks like a sniper rifle round to me. I'm just curious about it. There were no markings on the boxes. Looked like he had around 120 rounds.

The CZ 527 appears to be a class act. I've pretty much decided I want (not need!) a Savage 24V series D, chambered in .22 Hornet over a 20 gauge. But, I've not been very successful in finding one. I'd hate to buy any gun sight unseen, unless it was factory new. So, I'm basically looking in the local area... and within a reasonable driving distance. So, if you know of anyone with one, that would like to sell it, or do some trading, please let me know. Thanks.

What's the best 22 Hornet & it's Hunting Applications?
Sidewinder replied to Sidewinder's topic in Long Guns
Well, I guess I wore everyone out with so many questions! I do want to thank everyone that gave answers and foresight into my topic of the .22 Hornet. I like the positives mentioned here about the round; quieter, less recoil, decent performance under 200 yards, and a pound of powder goes a long way in these small cases. I appreciate all of the negatives that was pointed out too... especially the high over the counter price of new ammo. I'm always keeping my eye open for some yard sale priced older soft point or hollow point. -
Thanks to Luke E., for taking me on a dove shoot Sunday afternoon. We hit some and missed some, but had a great time. I want everyone to know that Luke E. is a good and kind man. He went out of his way to make sure I got to go dove hunting, put me on the best shooting spot, deflected birds my way, and gave me a box of hard to find rifle ammo. It was like Christmas in September! I've got to stop here and add that the thing that makes all of this special to me, is the big difference in our age groups. Luke is much younger than me, but made sure I had an enjoyable time and wouldn't take any pay for the ammo. He could have just gone hunting with friends in his own age group, but invited me. Being a city dweller, but having been raised on a farm, I miss taking my gun and going hunting in the field or woods. I also have to mention that the first we met, he gave me a couple of Weaver scope bases for a Ruger 1022... and wouldn't take any pay for them either! Luke puts others before himself, and that is refreshing, given the selfish...all for/about me... world we live in these days. Luke, thank you for your kindness to an old codger that misses more dove than he hits...but I absolutely enjoyed the hunt and comradery. Thank you for a fun hunt and the ammo.

Well, I think you guys are right about no Remington 760s chambered in .22 Hornet. However, I did find the .22 Hornet mentioned under the geneology of the 760/7600 in an article bt the Remington Society. I sure like the idea of a .22 Hornet in a pump action platform. Maybe I should look at a CZ 527 in .22 Hornet.

Gregintenn, now I'll have to go back and research my research, as I can't remember exactly where I read the write ups. Also, seems I saw some on Gun Broker, from a search. I could be mistaken...the ole grey matter don't work like she used to! If I can locate it again, I'll reference it here.

The data shows that they built at least a couple of million in the .22 Hornet and .223 models, so there should be some around. I would like to have one, even though I have other guns that would fill the predator/varmint hunting nich. Anybody got one?
-
Has anyone on here ever owned one or hunted with one? Thoughts on this gun as a middle Tennessee "coyote"/ varmint gun? Do the receiver rails scollop out like they do on the larger calibers? Which is the better gun, the 760 or the 7600? Thoughts on one in .223? I appreciate your input on this make and model, as I'm thinking about one in .22 Hornet.

Welcome to Tennessee and the TGO forum Senior Chief. I did both A & B school there, and did two tours of instructor duty there as well. Retired there in 1977 as an AMSC. I used to hunt all over that area in the late 60s and mid 70s. Lots of folks would let me and a friend hunt on their property back then. I have lost touch since then, but there are a lot of retirees in the area. Go out to the Charles Baker Airport and ask around. If Sonny Nivens or Frank Beaugard are still around, they might be able to help you. We all were flight instructors back in those days. They are good guys. Tell them I said hello. PM me for my name. Good luck.

That sounds great to me Luke. I'll be looking forward to it. By that time, they should have perfected their dodging and darting maneuvers... just right for us "sharp shooters", huh? LOL Thanks for grabbing the Hornet ammo for me. I'll pay you for it when i see you. I'll be sure to bring my knife to show you too. I think I'll try to pick up that sharpening devise you mentioned. You said it was a Smith, but can you give me the model and cost for it, please? Have you sharpened any stainless knives with it, and if so, did it do a good job? Have a good trip out to Oklahoma. I was stationed in Norman Oklahoma, when I was 17 years old! The people were the friendlist and very kind to us homesick sailors. Good people.

Congratulations Shaun, that's a good looking TC Encore. I have three of the TC Contenders with an assortment of pistol and rifle barrels. But none in the 460 S&W. What a cannon! Bet you go through a pound of powder pretty quick! It ought to get the job done for you. Anxious to see that first buck you take with it.

Haven't been on here too much lately Luke. I sure appreciate the invites last year, and enjoyed it a lot... even the one field where a lone dove could out maneuver 30 hunters blasting away...and nary a feather fell! The sound of anti-aircraft fire all around the field was exciting. I found a Case skinning knife, almost like the one that got lifted from me in a military household shipment. It's buckhorn handle and stainless. Now, if I can just figure out how to get a sharp edge on it with my stone. I like an edge that will shave the hair on my arm.First time I've tried to sharpen a stainless knife. Any suggestions? It's an older knife...model 523-5 SSP .XX.

Jwhjwh54, looks like you're on a short final there in your avatar. Is that 36 at MBT, or some other airport? I also notice you are from Nashville...and killing hogs. I'd love to get in on a hog hunt in the area. Do you hunt locally, or go on commercial hunts?

TNWNGR, thanks for the information. I haven't been on the forum for a while. One statement you made caught my attention...about the new stock possibly splitting too. This does concern me as I like the little gun, and had hoped to enjoy it for a long time. Boyds probably makes a dependable stock for it, but I don't want to have to pay for something that is covered under the Taurus warranty. If there is anyone on this forum from Taurus, please post and help me swap my cracked stock for a new one!

Caster, I don't know what project you have in mind, but I do have such a two stroke engine. If you'll PM me, I'll give you the details... and, I think I have some picks on one of my computers.

What is significance of "JM" Stamped on Marlin 30-30 Barrels?
Sidewinder posted a topic in Long Guns
We all see Marlin 30-30s advertised as "JM" models, but what does that mean? I did some research and what I found out surprised me. It doesn't necessarily mean what you think it means. In-stock barrels were used after the Remington change. Before paying more for a "JM" stamped barrel, you might want to research the situation. -
Some Thoughts on Buying/Selling Used Firearms
Sidewinder replied to Sidewinder's topic in General Chat
Lots of "gun grabber" news the last couple of days. Obama is saying that the government just needs to "brainwash" the people on gun control, like we did on gay marriage! Will the Americans wake up in time...that is the question. -
Some Thoughts on Buying/Selling Used Firearms
Sidewinder replied to Sidewinder's topic in General Chat
Don't know how you take the "emotion" out of someone asking too much for grandad's, or dad's, gun after they have passed away. Sorta makes you feel like you're walking on egg shells, especially when you want the gun... but not at that price. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has ran up against this. How do you guys handle it, without being perceived as a cold hearted jerk? Love to hear from a lot of you... especially those of you that have been successful in navigating these barriers. Thanks. -
How Do I "Unblock" Someone on Galaxy Tab 4 Kit Kat Oper. Sys.?
Sidewinder replied to Sidewinder's topic in General Chat
Omega, thanks for the help. None of that was on my screen. Somehow, I messed with some "Import" settings, and now it's working. Thanks though... I appreciate your reply. -
What river would that be XxthejuicexX? I live in the B'oro also. Would love to get in on some of that bass fishing. Are you talking about the Stones River?

Apparently this is a pretty common problem...as evidenced by the posts on the Internet. Had the stocks been made from walnut, I doubt there would be any problem. I'm a procastenator, so I haven't dilligently sought out a person to work with me at Taurus. I'd just like to remove my cracked stock and send it to them as an exchange for a new one. The shell holder feature is probably limited to the Tuffy configuration. I just wish Taurus would send me a new buttstock, with a mailer that I could tape onto the box, to send the cracked stock back to them in.
