I'd buy it. Looks a lot better than some I've spent too much money for!

I used to carry my Taurus 617 about 1/3 of the time, but I sold it and upgraded to a Ruger Alaskan. I only occasionally carry it.
-
Sounds good. Now I just have to save / sell off some to get it. Might be a good replacement if I sell my old Winchester 94. I actually found it through Jeff Quinn at gunblast.com. Love watching his videos on YouTube.

I recently stumbled across this version of a 1892 lever action in a take down version. Given the price, I'm guessing they're fairly rare. Anyone had any experience with this company? Edit to add link : http://www.taylorsfirearms.com/long-guns/cartridge-rifles/1892-alaskan.html

Yeah... quick wouldn't be the word I would describe for follow ups. More like moderate. Maybe with some practice, and when the bruise on my palm and thumb heals....

I can honestly say after the range, .454 and wood grips do NOT go together! I had gel pad gloves on, and that was still brutal. I did carry it crossdraw all day while hiking in the GSMNP. It was actually really comfortable. I almost forgot it was there.
-
I'll have to get back to you on the wood grips after a range trip Monday. I didn't make it out there this week. Off hand, I doubt I'll shoot many hot loads with them, unless I have gloves on.
-
Not to discourage you from it, but bear in mind, this thing is pretty big. A redhawk in 44 would be a little easier to carry, I would think. The extra bulk would help soak up the recoil, though. So it's a trade off... I was looking hard at a RH backpacker before buying this one. I just had to have the .454.

As to the holster.... I like it well enough, but I'm considering the Mernickle for crossdraw carry. With the Simply Rugged, crossdraw is far too verticle for me. Strong side carry is perfect, though, so I may just stick with it for now.

Sure, I'll post a couple when I get home this morning. I ended up ordering a couple different grips- the non gel pad hogues, and a set of badger rosewood boot grips. Haven't tried them out yet, though. The gel version seem too big and too soft in my hands. I'm going out to the range Monday to test both and some ammo.

I emailed him today, and he said he thinks it's on his "out for delivery table". Hopefully I'll get it in by mid next week. I'm really looking forward to carrying this beast while hiking etc. I'll probably pick up the Chesty Rig later in the fall. I did end up having to order the heavier 300gr hard cast rounds off of Midway. No one locally carries anything bigger than a 260gr hollow point in .454.

Thanks. I ordered a Simply Rugged right after a got the pistol. Should only be another week or so until it gets here. I can't wait to be able to carry it hiking, and occasionally around town. Love the bear paw design. Who makes that one?

Finally figured it out. I love the look of the non fluted cylinder! Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk

I'm loving it so far. I took it over to the indoor range at On Target. The 454 felt like a punch to the chest. I've never actually had the blowback push my shirt back and flip my hair up.. pretty cool Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk

It's the 454, which is a pretty hefty round. I'm having a little trouble uploading the pics right now, mainly due to my 4 month old son.... I'll try again after he heads off to sleep,

This one has been on my wish list for a few years, and everything just kind of fell in to place for it to be the right time to pick it up. I've got to give it to the guys at Guns and Leather in Greenbrier. They're great to work with, even if it is a heck of a drive from the Boro.

Sorry to hear about the Bersa. I've been a big fan of them since I bought their .380 about 10+ years ago. I know i'll likely get berated for this, but my current mouse gun is the Taurus TCP, and it's great. Never had a misfire, and it's a great size when you absolutely have to stay concealed. That being said, you might consider the Ruger LC9. Almost as small, and you get a boost in ammo size.

Just bought a new revolver, but can't find ammo...

Thanks for all the info guys. I'll be looking into a Lee for now. We just had a boy, so I can't go all in on an expensive set up right now. I did manage to track down both rounds, and yes, both are pricey. Turns out Outpost got a few boxes in, and Gander Mtn. had some as well. By the way, did y'all buy your reloading set up locally, or just online? -

I've been toying with the idea of reloading for a while now. I thought the price of 45 acp was bad, but some of the prices with this new gun has made up my mind. Thanks for the input everyone. My wife will be happy. She has been pushing me to get into it as well (gotta love that). What are y'alls' thoughts on using relaods for self defense, ei- legal ramifications if I were to have to shoot someone? -

Thanks. I'll look into them. I was hoping to grab some .454 locally to hit the range this week, though.. Thanks for the tip on the cowboy loads. I think I remeber Bass Pro carrying some. Might be worth the drive into Nashville again. -

I just picked up a Ruger Alaskan in .454/ 45 Long Colt, but I'm having trouble finding the .454 casull in any form and .45 colt in target ammo. Anyone know where these can be found? -
Ok thanks for the heads up, I might try to get up to Clarksville this weekend if nothing else. Thanks for the tip about Outpost Armory Oriental, I'll check it out this week....
