  1. Yeah, after doing a bit more reading I'm finding other people are having the same problem with these mags when used in new 580 series Mini 14's like mine. Supposedly if you have an older Mini they may fit and function better. I have a friend with an older one, I may bring them to him and see if they work okay in his. If so I'll probably just give them to him.
  2. So I keep hearing positive things about the Tapco 30 round magazines for the Mini 14. I hear that with the revised gen ii version they fixed the initial problems and people are very happy. They're quite reasonably priced, so I decided to order two of them. My box from CTD arrived this evening. Wow, that was a waste of money. Good thing they were cheap. I decided to give them a quick test by seeing how well they would hand cycle ammunition. I loaded one with 30 rounds of 55 grain brass cased FMJ and the other with 62 grain steel cased JSP (Brown Bear if you're curious). I've fired both with the factory 5 round mag with no problems. The first thing I noticed is the magazines were difficult to seat. Not just one, but both of them. I slid them in and they wouldn't lock in place unless I really gave it a good solid shove. The factory 5-rounder locks in place effortlessly, so the rifle is fine. After playing with it a bit I figure out how much force it takes to seat them and decide to move on to cycling the bolt. First I tried the brass. I cycle the bolt and it grabs the first round, but it's slow to move into position. I cycle it again, it ejects and grabs a second round. Again and it ejects but it doesn't grab the top round. I pop the magazine, reseat it and it does the same thing - cycles two rounds, then stops. I tried emptying and reloading the mag and got the similar results. Now for the steel case. Short version: very similar results to what I had with the brass. It would strip a few rounds and then stop feeding. Anybody have a suggestion as to what the problem may be? If not I guess I'll have to pony up for some factory Ruger mags.
  3. Apparently there's a little more to it. You didn't mention the "naked" part ... http://news.yahoo.co...elebrities.html
  4. If they put him under the jail will he be Deeper than the Holler?
  5. I'm not a LEO, but I'd think that like anything it's a matter of how you handle it. There's a world of difference between these two scenarios: "Officer, thank you for getting here so fast. As I told 911, I've been involved in a self defense shooting. My holstered firearm is over there. Here's my driver's license and my handgun carry permit. As suggested in my HCP class I've contacted my attorney and he has advised me not to discuss this matter any further until I can confer with him." "I got nothing to say to you cops until I can talk to my lawyer!!!"
  6. Depends on what's important to you. Accuracy: On paper the AR is more accurate than the Mini. Your mileage may vary, however. With iron sights I'm a better shot with my Mini than with my AR. Advantage: theoretically AR, but YMMV. After market accessories: There are quite a few accessories for the Mini - stocks, rails, rings, etc.., but nothing like the AR. The AR is the lego of the firearms world. Advantage: AR. Aesthetics: No contest. The Mini-14 can be dressed up to look like a tacticool black rifle just like the AR, but there's no way to make an AR look like a classic wood & steel rifle (the oddball wood furniture you can get for the AR hardly counts). Advantage: Mini-14. Magazines: There are huge numbers of inexpensive, reliable AR mags out there. Mags for the Mini-14 are significantly more expensive and anything other than factory Ruger mags are of questionable reliability. Advantage: AR. Reliability: Mini-14's are ridiculously reliable and will eat pretty much any ammo vaguely shaped like a .223 cartridge. AR's can be reliable, but can be much more picky about ammo. Advantage: Mini-14. Parts availability: You can order every single part that makes up an AR from many, many web sites. Ruger is one of those annoying companies that refuses to sell a lot of their parts to anyone. Need the part replaced? Ship your gun to them. Advantage: AR. It used to be that AR's were significantly more expensive, but that's no longer true. Advantage: Neither.
  7. Welcome fellow Smyrnite. Or is that Smyrnanite?
  8. So called "people" like this guy (and any other white supremacist types) are the worst kind of subhuman sludge. It's not like any of these guys have the guts, or are skilled enough, to go out and try this crap with a pack of gang-bangers on Milwaukee's North Side. It's inevitably some elderly black man, an Asian/Indian etc. that they victimize. It says a lot about these self-professed "race warriors". Cowards, one and all.
  9. Same thing I carry every day, a Kershaw Scallion. It's nothing fancy, but it cuts nicely, opens easily and the half serrated blade has been useful many times over the years. The pic isn't the one on me, but it looks like this:
  10. Mine didn't used to be. They'll request an update and get it eventually.
  11. Interesting article. Everyone reading this thread should go check it out.
  12. If you want a removable mag buy an AK. I have rarely seen an SKS function properly with anything other than the original 10 round mag. I'll take a reliable 10 rounds over a "maybe" 30 any day.
  13. Except they can and do. If you make your living off of other people choosing to spend money with you over your competition, then saying controversial things can have major effects on your business. Sometimes positive, sometimes negative. Just ask the Dixie Chicks.
  14. Like most subcompact 9mm's, mine seems to be picky about hollowpoints. It feeds ball all day long, but it likes some hollowpoints better than others. I want to try a couple of boxes of HCD to see how they work. After all, a "lesser" hollowpoint that feeds and fires beats a "better option" that malfs any day of the week.
  15. Does anyone know a local (Nashville/Murfreesboro area) shop that carries Hornady Critical Defense 9mm in stock? I wanted to grab a box to try in my PM9.
  16. I just tell them I have a security system already and I'm not looking to change. I've never had a problem with them taking no for an answer. Of course, I've never had one knock on my door that late.
  17. First off, I never say "not possible." Murphy will FIND a way. Second, I don't put anything else in there because in an emergency I don't want to have to fumble around ANYTHING else. If my hand goes in that pocket it should find one thing and one thing only. When fractions of a second matter, sticking my hand down there and having to maneuver around another object is not acceptable.
  18. Rule 1 of Pocket Carry: use a holster. Even a cheap little nylon Desantis will do the job. Rule 2 of Pocket Carry: nothing else, and I mean NOTHING ELSE goes in that pocket. EVER. Follow those two rules and you're golden. Break them and you're begging for a negligent discharge. I carry a S&W 649 like that all the time in my right front pocket and I've never had anyone notice. You'll notice it when you look in the mirror, but other people just don't unless you point it out.
  19. The last time I was beardless was 1994 when the company I worked for dropped their no beards policy. I can't grow something quite as impressive as some of you guys, but I do like it. I keep mine trimmed short with an adjustable beard trimmer and scissors.
  20. This. I'd like to think that I'd have dragged my fat butt close enough to him to pull out my J Frame or even try to tackle him, but having never been in a situation like that I have no friggin idea how I'd react. For all I know I'd completely freak, brown my pants and curl up on the floor. I suspect the truth would fall closer to the first option than the last, but hopefully I'll never find out.
  21. BTW, since this is your first time, this is the form the FFL will have you fill out and sign: http://www.atf.gov/forms/download/atf-f-4473-1.pdf
  22. Note to self: never to drink coffee with Dolomite.
  23. Depending on details at the time, I'd yell at the guy that the police have been called and they're on their way. Hopefully that would make him take off - my immediate goal is to stop the threat after all, and him running away accomplishes that without me having to deal with the the legal and financial issues that attend shooting someone. If he ignores me and continues the attack? Well then, I've got plenty of time to take a nice aimed "just like at the range" shot.
  24. We still have a right to a speedy trial. In this particular case Zimmerman waived that right, presumably at the advice of his attorney. Yep, here it is: http://articles.latimes.com/2012/may/08/nation/la-na-nn-zimmerman-waives-speedy-trial-20120508
