Looks like fun. I have always used a wiffle ball bat for bees and wasps. I love the swack sound when you hit one.

2015 Spring Turkey Hunting thread - Post your season updates here!

There are lots of youtube videos, but I learned hunting with others. I recommend you get out there and listen to turkeys and call very little. Learn to cluck, purr and yelp and learn when to use them. A slate call is the most versitale, IMHO. I use mouth calls too, but a slate is easier to learn on. Call less than you want to. Decoys can help, but you don't have to have them. I use them less and less each year. I just breast out my turkeys. I don't cook the legs and thighs. I have tried in the past, but quit messing with it. If you have cleaned a deer, you can figure out cleaning a turkey. I bone out the breast. Split the skin and pull it out of the way and filet out the breast into two large pieces. Give it a go. If you get frustraded, I am sure you wouldn't have any trouble finding someone here to come call for you and show you the ropes, me included. -

DaveS, I am still planning to haul your wrinkly old butt out on a turkey hunt this season. I'll wait till it's warm enough for ticks, so you have something to complain about. :D -

Considering how well the deer season thread went this past year, I thought we should do the same for Turkey Season. We are just a couple weeks away from the youth hunt and the start of regular season. Alabama opens this weekend too! I am planning to hunt Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana this year. Anyone else planning to travel this year? Yesterday I saw the first longbeard behind the house. He was across the river, but his hens were in my backyard. I heard him gobbling down river last week. I love hearing them gobble in the morning, it's like a drug for me.

I am right handed. Left eyed. I shoot everything left handed. I can shoot rifle and pistol right handed, I just have to close my left eye to hit anything.

Shaun, what constrition is your Indian Creek? I'm going to need a new choke if I go to lead. I have always read good things about the Indian Creek chokes.
-
Good advise right there. This will give you the best result with the least investment. I have a decent stash of Hevi Shot Magblends that shoot very well from my gun/choke, so that's what I am using this year. Next year, or the year after, depending on how long my stash lasts, I am going to switch to the lead longbeard XR's. They are cheaper per shot and I have seen some great long range patterns from them.
-
I'm using a Pure Gold, but it really depends on what shell you want to shoot. The new lead longbeards XR have been said to shoot best from an unported choke.

Audubon Guide to Mushrooms is a must have if you are interested in shroom hunting. The pocket sized guide is great. They also offer an iphone app for about 5 bucks. I watch for shrooms while turkey scouting/hunting. Pull the guide up and check them if I find something other than Morels.

Found a few shrooms last year. Depends on the weather a lot. Sometime they come and go in March, sometimes April. I don't remember finding any in May around here. French Lick Indiana is a popular spot to hunt them.

Pretty good show. I picked up a box call and a couple mouth calls. Looked at a lot of spandex.

Between Harbor Freight and Hooter's! Same owners as the Wilma Rudolph location I believe.

Going to follow. I've been working a lot of weekends, but will try to make it too. I've been to Casa Blanca, good choice by me.

Welcome,! Clarksville here too, well Port Royal, close enough. :)

John Hines poker gift to myself with some German Strang.

For me, it's just one more piece of information. I look at them and maybe it convinces me to go to my stand earlier or later than originally planned. That's about all.
-
I'd love to go too. Let us know how your trip goes.

I like Cabela's tactical tat'r. I have an older model and it has served me well. Cool enough to wear on warmer days. I use a Burris FastFire sight and have for the last 3-4 years. I don't want to ever be without one on my turkey gun.
