  1. Unless you are active or retired military it is difficult to get the area you want to hunt.
  2. Salt Licks, salt blocks, mineral blocks, c'mere deer, deer 'cane and other popular mineral supplements are legal to hunt over in Tennessee. The safest thing to do when you are a question about a particular brand of deer attractant is to call your local game warden. Not the main office, but your local game warden. Ask his opinion on that brand of supplement. My local game warden tells people that generally you can consider it legal if the bag or jug lists the product as a mineral supplement. Another thing he says is if it melts down into the dirt, usually it is ok. Corn, Apples, sweet feed and such poured into a pile in the woods is not legal to hunt over unless the area had the bait removed 10 days prior. Usually this is well explained in the sates hunter safety program. If you have not attended one, you should. If they don't bring it up, ask them. Here is the law: 70-4-113. Use of bait, pitfalls and certain other devices in taking birds and animals prohibited — Penalty — Exceptions. — (a) It is unlawful for any person at any time to make use of any pitfall, deadfall, cage, snare, trap, net, baited hooks, poison, chemicals, explosives, set guns, spotlights, electric lights or torches, bait, which includes any grain, or mixture of any ingredients, used as or for food purposes, or other devices for the purpose of killing, injuring, or capturing any birds or animals protected by the wildlife laws of this state, except as otherwise expressly provided.
  3. Unless you have access to private land then you have pretty much have to join the masses on public hunting land. It's not all bad on public land. If you are after the experience of being in the woods more than killing a huge deer, the you can have an enjoyable experience. Check out the TWRA site for WMA and public hunting land maps and regulations. I usually recommend that adults that have little hunting experience go to the library and rent some hunting videos and books. There is a lot of good information out there for free. It's great to find a hunting buddy that can take you out and teach you first hand. A co-worker, church member or neighbor. Look for hints of camo and strike a conversation.

    Iron sight advice

Best advise for any new shooter. It all comes down to being able to shoot alot to get better. No better way than no recoil and cheap ammo.
  5. 10mm is a good choice IMHO. I use a .44mag, but ain't nothing wrong with the mighty 10mm.
  6. Since we didn't kill enough birds for a picture... Opening day of dove season 2009 Youth Hunt
  7. In my experience the "blood trail" lights do not work great.

    Iron sight advice

Just liking to shoot and not being serious about it sounds like a .22LR to me for sure. I love just plinking with open sights. Most of the factory sights leave something to be desired, but there are lots of good aftermarket irons out there. A 10/22 or a Marlin 60 or a Henry H001 or a Savage bolt action. All good choices for low cost shooting fun. I have a Savage 93G .22magnum that came with iron sights and is a hoot to shoot out to 100 yards.
  9. It was the best day ever! Only shot one dove, but I got to spend the entire day with my daughter on her first dove hunt. We both fired about 1/2 a box of shells in 6 hours. The doves were not flying well. Of the 10 or 12 doves we shot at, about 3 were legitimately within range. We still had fun. My daughter got to shoot her 20 gauge enough to figure out it wasn't going to hurt her. She is ready to go again. Mission accomplished.
  10. Anyone taking their kids to the Lincon or Marshall county Youth fields? I am thinking about making the drive from Clarksville tomorrow.
  11. '06 Hoyt MT Sport at 67 pounds. Beman ICS Hunter carbon arrows with Wasp Jak-Hammer SST expandables. I just put a new LimbSaver Prism sight on this year. It was a freebie from a sponsored Hunting buddy. It is a great sight. I have the 20 yard pin sighted and the 30 is close. I just have to finish up over the next month and get lots more practice in the process.

    Scents??

I keep Code Blue doe in heat with me in a scent bomb and use it just before and during the rut. I do believe in Fox Pee for a cover scent. I only use it on the the bottoms of my boots before walking into the woods. Just a spray or two to help cover my scent trail. I have hung the pine scent wafers from my stand years ago, but I don't think they do much. I usually keep my clothes in a giant ziploc storage bag with a few cedar limbs or pine limbs. I use scent free laundry detergent or just baking soda. I use the hunter's soap and don't wear deodorant or other smelly products. Even though I do all of this, I believe that a deer can still smell you if they are downwind. I hunt the wind, always. However, like any hunter knows, sometimes the wind whirls around. The less scent I put in the woods the better.
  13. avoid shooting skunks near your house. My friend made that mistake one night and it took a week till he could spend time in his yard.
  14. Amen. I was walking out one night and got on the wrong set of cateyes. They took me in the wrong direction and I was pretty far from the road by the time I realized what was going on. I had to back track and it took me forever to get back to the truck.
  15. I have a Henry H001, which is the basic blued model. I comes with a plastic sight and a plastic barrel band, but I ordered the metal parts from Henry for less than 20.00. It shoots so great. Very accurate and very smooth action. A lot of people don't like the plastic sights and painted receiver, but for 200.00 it is a great shooter. The ruger 10/22 has a painted receiver and I would call it probably the most popular .22 around. This summer I put an older Weaver D4 7/8" scope on the Henry and I like it even more now. The small scope fits the gun better than newer 1" tubed scopes and is perfect for the 25 yard squirrel hunting that I use it for. My daughter shot it the last time we went to the range and I am afraid I am going to have to buy another or risk not having one for myself. The Marlin is a well made, pretty gun. It also cost more than 500.00. I ain't got 500 dollars to drop on a .22 lever gun right now.
  16. It sounds like you hung the stand correctly to me. Two ratchet straps should give you a solid stand. Buy one of these! Fall Guy 20+ Retractor Treestand Safety Strap This works like a seat belt. You are fall safe the entire time and you are not on a short tether once you get to the top.
  17. While it would be more satisfying to mount it yourself, it is probably best left to a professional. I am guess that you mount a deer head. I have seen the molds and there ain't no stuffing in there.
  18. I will say that AEDC can be a terrible place to hunt if you are set on hunting in any area that is easy to access. Any road or trial that can easily be walked down will be walked by lots of hunters. The trick is to get a map and get off the beaten path. Of course this does require some level of physical fitness. I think this pretty much goes for any public hunting area though.
  19. I have been waiting for a big Fox Squirrel to mount. I like the mount that looks like the squirrel is bellied up to the trunk of a tree with all legs reached out.
  20. If you find a piece and want to split the cost with a couple responsible QDMA type hunters, let me know. A friend and I are looking for a lease. We are bow hunters and turkey hunters. I have a couple small places to hunt now, but I would like to get on a long term lease and really work it up for some quality deer.

    ticks?

I believe it is orderless when dry. I am a little freaky about smell when bow hunting and I still use it. I have sniffed and sniffed and don't smell anything. I spray my clothes down, let them dry, store them in plastic bags with fresh pine branches and then spray them with scent killer just before heading out. I hate ticks, but I wouldn't use it if I thought it was running deer off.
  22. I hunt there every year. I usually try to make the bow hunt and then get a shotgun hunt. I kill deer just about every hunt. When I haven't killed deer, it was by choice. Sorry, I ain't going to tell you my secret spots, but there are lots of deer and plenty of places to get away from the crowds if you are willing to walk. I missed a very large buck last year. I jumped him while walking out just flat missed. That was one time I wise I had not had a scope on my shotgun, he was just too close to get focused that fast. You will see a lot of small bucks killed there. I hate to see all the little bucks being taken, I wish AEDC would enact a DOE FIRST rule on shotgun hunts. All the game wardens beg people to take does. I usually kill does at AEDC because I won't shoot a year and half old buck. I drew the first hunt this year. October 17 and 18 I believe. The deer will be hunter shy by the time you get to hunt in November. Fortunately you will have the Rut on your side about that time.

    ticks?

Permerthrin, as mentioned earlier is the best thing you can use. You spray your clothes and gear with permerthrin and let it dry. Don't put it straight on your skin! If a tick or chigger or skeeter touches your clothes THEY DIE! I have sat during turkey season and watched deer tick crawl up my pants leg. I waited to see how far he could get. He didn't make it past my knee and he was cold dead. These were pants that I had sprayed a couple weeks before. The can says it stays on through so many washings, but I always reapply after washing. It does not smell after it dries. I have used this stuff for 10 years through bow hunting and turkey hunting in Tennessee and all year long in Florida. In 10 years of bow hunting, turkey hunting, scouting and hog hunting in Florida swamps for 5 years I have found ZERO ticks on my skin when using Permerthrin. I got a tick bite last year while picking blackberries because I only used OFF and some 100% DEET. I pulled 10 ticks off my clothes and one of them ended up getting me on the butt. I buy mine at Wal-Mart or Bass Pro Shops. I use the Repel Pemanone in the blue and orange can. I used to have the Army issued stuff, but ran out years ago. Both have always worked for me.
  24. I used to be the "it's new, I got to have one" guy. Then I figured out that nothing else on earth depreciates faster than a compound bow. If you buy an 800.00 bow this year that you will be lucky to get half that for it the next year. I have started being the guy that pays half price for the 1 or 2 year old bows. I have heard lots of good things about Bowtech and Diamond. If I were looking for a new bow, I would look hard at both and shoot both. I think all the big name bow guys have an "off brand" that they sell a little cheaper. Usually the riser is cast instead of machined and usually they are a little heavier. I would buy the cheaper model. I got a buddy that shoots a 20 year old Pearson and kills more deer than me every year. He is a little less picky about what he shoots though.
