rob, I used to bowfish a lot on Tims Ford when I was a teenager. On hot summer days I had good luck in the mouths and backwaters of feeder creeks. Woods has some good water for carp hunting up towards Prairie Plains in the river backwater and Bradly creek. My only double was on a pair of breeding carp that were rolling through the shallow water in front of me. I was in Taylor Creek where they built that new walking trail park in Estill. Back then it was a cow pasture and the road would flood. We would walk the flooded road and shoot carp. Lots of fun. I have also had good luck down around the boat ramp in Dechard. My mom still lives in T-town so maybe we can get out and do some bowfishing this summer.

Well Sunday wasn't a total bust. We didn't go out and sit in the rain early but we did get to the woods for a few hours. We hadn't had any luck finding turkeys today and we were picking up to leave when we heard a gobble close by. We hunkered down and saw a young gobbler headed toward us in the woods. We had him in to 50 yards, but just couldn't get to the magic 35 yard mark I feel that her 20 gauge needs to be deadly. When we got back to the truck and were driving home around 1:30pm we saw 3 nice longbeards with about 40 hens. It's still too early to draw those big boys away from the pack. Still a great weekend in the woods with my daughter. I am hell-bent on getting her a bird this year. I am not going to hunt until I can get her one first.

The 25's actions are made like the rimfires instead of the other centerfires. Not fancy but functional. I didn't think they were that much cheaper. Comparing list prices on the website doesn't show much difference between the base models. Sorry, I don't own one yet, but I would like to have one in .223 also. Look forward to some user reviews.

No shots, but we were on birds. We got into place about 30 minutes too late this morning so we had to sacrifice our set up plan. No blind, No decoys. We got in a ditch in a windrow of trees between two fields. The birds pitched down to the far field so we belly crawled and laid in the mud bank of the ditch. As soon as I hit the slate two medium sized gobblers thundered with a couple of gobbles. The hens worked their way across the field while the gobblers took turns chasing a few Jakes out of the field. Then the two started our way. I purred and clucked them into a frenzy of strutting and gobbling. My daughter was too my right and the birds were too my left. She did not have a shot to the left at all with our dismal set up. I just hoped I could get the birds to walk across the field in front of us and give her a shot. They did not. They both strutted around for 20 minutes and stayed just 5 yards too far to the left. They finally wondered off and we decided to move uphill and try to head the group off at the top of the hill in the hardwoods. We called a couple hours and no more gobbles or turkeys. We threw in the towel and decided to go back to the big field the birds pitched down in and set up for tomorrow morning so we could just slip in early. On our way back to the truck I took a short cut through the woods and popped out at the edge of a field road with a double bearded gobbler 30 yards from us in the field. He had heard us, but not seen us. We tucked in behind a couple trees, standing, no face cover. He was a little spooky, but when I hit the call he turned at started right back to us. I let him work his way within 15 yards of us, but again she had no shot. I just needed him to come up the road maybe 4 more yards and clear the big tree that was in her way. No dice. He turned and went up the field edge, dropping down out of sight. I couldn't get him back again. So close. So much fun. We will be back at it again in the morning, this time 30 minutes earlier.

That is one of the best looking hog mounts I have seen. You really did a good job.

Other than closing one eye or wearing a dot on your shooting glasses, then you are left with learning to shoot with the dominant side. I just close one eye. I know it's not the tactical thing to do, but I am a hunter, not a SWAT officer.

What happens on the FTE? Is the extractor pulling the brass from the chamber, and then the slide coming forward on the spent shell before it clears the chamber? That is usually what happens with limp wristing. Is the slide coming back far enough to pick up the next round out of the mag? If so you may have an ejector/extractor issue instead of a recoil spring/limp wrist issue. Maybe not. Does it happen through out the mag, always the first round, always the last round? A lighter recoil spring is a cheap easy fix. I would start with a good cleaning of the slide internals and a new spring.

Dave, I will check with my buddy about the situation on the NWR. He has been out of state training, but I believe they were setting up feeders to try and kill them out. Not sure if they have done any killing yet. I should be able to find out next week. If not, I will get the low down and maybe we can get up a hog hunt.

14 were there at 5:45pm tonight. 3 gobblers. No sound though

Anyone taking their youngun' on the youth turkey hunt March 27th & 28th? My daughter is 11 and this will be her second year turkey hunting. She didn't get a bird last year, but we had fun hunting. We had hoped to get some trigger time on the Mossberg this weekend but the cold wet weather has postponed that. She doesn't like shooting the 3" turkey loads so we practice with #8 leftover dove shells. I only make her shoot a couple 3" loads for practice. I really hope I can get a bird in for her on the youth hunt. We have a great place to hunt with lots of birds, we just have to get a good setup and do our part.

I may squeeze in an Alabama hunt this spring. My dad lives there and between his and the neighboring farm there are usually some turkey around.

I packed my new Tactical Tat'r vest last weekend. I have been painting the scope I added to my turkey gun. Daughter and I are going to pattern the guns this weekend since we both got new sights this year. I put a fiber optic ghost ring on her gun and left the 4x scope that I used for slugs on my gun. I have painted it to match the woodland camo. Just a quick rattle can paint job, but it matches nicely. Just a couple more coats of clear and it will be ready. I picked up a few new calls last month and I have been playing with them the past couple of weeks. We still have to get her some new camo since she has out grown everything she owns. I wish I could find a ladies sized leafy camo suit that she could get a few years out of. Daughter and I went out and scouted a spot for the youth hunt March 27th & 28th. We will probably roost the turkeys the night before the youth hunt, just to give us a little better chance and let us know for sure where they are sleeping. Hopefully she can get her first turkey this year. DEATH TO THE TICKS!!!!

Make sure you check out some of the shot placement differences between hogs and deer. If you are using a 45-70, than you have more options. My favorite set up is a .44mag pistol or lever action and I shoot them in the center of the neck. The neck shot is a lot higher percentage shot than a head shot and I have never seen a .44cal neck shot pig take a single step. For years I would shoot them just at the bottom of the ear with anything from .22mag to 30-06, but I will admit that I missed a couple hurried shots and once hit too low blowing the jaw off. It took all day tracking to get a second killing shot. If you are taking 80-120 pound meat hogs, then the neck is perfect because you don't ruin any meat and you don't have to track. If you are a taking a 300+ pound trophy boar, then you can shoot to break the front shoulder if you are using a hard cast 45-70. Buffalo Bore ammo makes some awesome hog thumpers.

Killed and eaten a bunch of them. I like it better than any other game. If you want a trophy, then a guided hunt is about the only hope. You can't pattern them with much success. They are hard to hunt on public land. After years and years of hunting them on public land in Florida, I gave up. Private land is easier in Florida because you can feed them. If TWRA had any interest in hunters taking more hogs than they would allow feeders. A buddy of mine is a Federal Fish and Game officer and they are setting up feeders at a local NWR so they can eradicate the hogs there. I am still hopeful that he will ask me to help You can get affordable guided hunts in south Georgia and Florida. Texasboars.com is a great site to get started with.

I bought the standard H001. It came with a plastic front sight and plastic barrel band. I called Henry and ordered the metal replacement parts. They are painted metal, much like the receiver and didn't cost much, less than 20.00 IIRC. Then I replaced the rear buckhorn sight with a Williams of similar style. It was a fun gun with open sights, but I eventually put a scope on it. I bought an older Weaver D4 off ebay for the little Henry. It fits the small gun perfectly. This is my favorite squirrel gun and my daughter loves to shoot it at the range. The octagon barrel model has a dovetailed front sight that is nicer than the standard models. I am very happy with mine. It has a permanent spot at my house.

ROLL TIDE! I wish Colt had played just so all the what if's could be hushed. I believe we would have seen a much different game plan on both sides of the ball.

I am not fat. I am overweight according to some screwed up height/weight chart. My wife that is also overweight on the same height/weight chart just out ran 30 co-workers in a 5K charity race. Even though she exercises daily and is not FAT she is part of the FAT statistic adding to the OP chart. I do see alot more fat kids and adults than I did when I was a kid. Back in the olden days, plumpness was a sign of prosperity. I may start running to the grocery store instead of driving. That way I can only buy the amount of bacon that I can run home with. My motivation will be to get stronger so I can run with more pounds of bacon.

You can check out some of the muzzle loader or shotgun scopes. They are not true EER scopes but some offer 4 or 5 inches of eye relief. Not sure if that is enough on the Mosin though. I don't recommend the NCStar. I would get a Tasco or Bushnell first. Maybe a used scope off ebay.

Savage uses a barrel nut to hold the barrel to the receiver. If the barrel nut gets loose, as it sounds like your's has, then the head space will be off, causing the misfires, and the barrel will wiggle around like you described. My first recommendation would be for you to call Savage and return the gun for repair to them just incase there is more wrong than just a loose barrel nut. If you are opposed to returning the gun to Savage, then take it to a local gunsmith. If you are opposed to that, then you need to purchase a barrel nut wrench and place the receiver in a padded vise and tighten the barrel nut. The barrel nut is visible on the assembled gun. It sits against the receiver at the start of the barrel. It almost looks like part of the barrel.

I just got a good text: 2 tickets to the SEC championship game in Atlanta $600.00 Hot Dogs, Pop Corn and Sodas $50.00 Making Tim Tebow cry PRICELESS! I guess Stoops at ND.
-
I am not a Tebow hater. I don't care that he cried, I am glad it was Alabama that brought him to tears though. I still believe that Tebow is one of the best college football players of all-time. Unfortunately for Florida he didn't have the strength to carry them by himself tonight. All week long I have been listening to the nay-sayers and telling them that I felt like Alabama had a good chance to win if we could rattle Tebow early. I am going to be in south Florida the night of the BCS championship game, sitting with all my gator fan friends. I am sure they will be pulling for whoever is playing Alabama. I am sure I will still be rubbing salt in the wound.

That is just about my dream job.
