  1. Awesome story. Nothing wrong with that 20ga. slug gun. My daughter has a Mossy with a slug barrel too, but she had the Remington 700 SPS in .243 first. It is a much less recoil than the 20ga slug and is a super sweet shooter. Remington has the same gun in 7mm-08 in youth size.
  2. 50.00 plus court cost and forfeiture of guns/treestands/gamecams/atvs/bows/decoys ect. They are lucky they didn't loose their hunting rights for a year or two also. While I DO NOT agree with TWRA on feeding wildgame, I do believe that we all have to play by the rules until we can get the rules corrected. Glad to hear Sumner is cracking down. I really wish our local wardens would find a way to stop all the road hunting here. Scares the hell out of me to have some idiot shooting from the road with no idea of what lies beyond the deer.
  3. I am sworn to secrecy. But I can tell you that they are in Tennessee and I have permission to hunt there. The first two bucks have been caught on this camera since it was put up a few weeks before bow season started. The 3rd buck didn't show up until this week. The camera is set up on a salt lick next to a pond in the woods. The new 10 pointer made a scrape right on top of the salt lick! Problem is that all the pictures have been between midnight and 3am. Enjoy
  4. I saw a 6 point bird dogging a doe on Saturday. Game Warden buddy reported seeing a 4 point hard chasing a doe on Fort Campbell. However, I have game cam pics of bucks still together.
  5. Let us see those pictures of kids with deer! We had a cold snap Friday night and it was the first good frost we've had on Saturday morning. Lana and I were in a double ladder stand Saturday morning. I set up this ladder stand for bow hunting, but after getting a lot of doe pictures off the trail cam near it, I decided to lay off it and let Lana hunt it for the first time during the youth hunt. We had deer nearby at first light. Problem was that all the deer were crossing the field in front of us instead of using the trail we were set up on. Because I had set this up for bow hunting, I had purposely left a lot of limbs to conceal me from the field. Lana wasn't able to get a clean shot. We ending up seeing about a dozen does and 4 bucks. All the bucks were small, but it was fun seeing deer for what seemed like 2 straight hours. Lana had a football game to cheer for at 10am so I took her to meet my wife and I went back to move the ladder stand for evening hunt. Unfortunately I had asked my hunting partner to lock the stand for me and he used a lock that I don't have a key for. No problem, we had a backup plan. I had placed a blind on a biologic field last weekend. I had not hunted it but did have reports of lots of does using it and one giant buck had been seen right at dark a couple times. We decided to give the blind a go since Lana had killed deer on the same field the previous two years. We had deer in the woods around us an hour before sunset. They were eating acorns on the far side of the field and I thought it was going to get dark before they came out to give her a shot. Then we heard deer behind us and this big doe came out into the field 10 yards from our blind. Lana had to wait another 15 minutes for the doe to clear some brush and then a little more for her to turn broadside. The shot was perfect. She took the top off the heart and got both lungs. The big doe rolled and was DRT! Deer Jerky and Grilled Backstrap on the menu this week.
  6. So when does everyone start rattling for bucks? I have heard reports of deer in the area starting to push each other around a little. I know that most of the bachelor groups have busted up and bucks are running alone for the most part. Usually Muzzleloader season is the best "chase phase" of our rut. So when is the right time to rattle?
  7. I stumbled across this while checking weather against Solunar tables and thought others might like to know about it. AccuWeather.com - Outdoor Sportsman Weather Forecast for Nashville, TN Looks like they compare solunar and weather conditions to make the forecast.
  8. You too Jeff. I missed you're member name, guess I was looking for something more difficult to remember...
  9. That truly sucks. I have always wanted to go out and do the old mining town trails. They look so cool watching the 4x4 tv shows. I drove home from Alaska about 10 years ago and we left Anchorage on Oct. 13th. We drove though a lot of snow in Canada and weren't able to see Glacier National Park because the roads were closed from snow. We did get to see Yellowstone and it was amazing.
  10. I hope it rained at our lease as hard as it rained on WD-40 and I driving home. I knew all I had to do was wash my truck. Finally washed it this morning since letting it remain nasty for the last month. That is usually all it takes for it to rain on me. Not complaining though...
  11. Went great! Got to meet GunTroll and RobertNashville and see my buddies WD-40 and K-Bug. The range was crowded so we didn't get to spend a lot of time conversing, but hopefully this was just the first meeting. There should be a lot less folks at the range once deer gun season opens.
  12. Well I sat through the middle of the day and did have a little 5 point buck come by about 11:30am. Didn't see much else besides fox squirrels. Tomorrow looks like a bust too. I may try it early am just because I am stubborn.
  13. Thanks for the invite WD, but I am going to sit till dark on a stand that I know has got to produce sooner or later. I have seen so many deer from the stand, just haven't gotten the stars to align. I skipped the early morning hunt, but I am going to get in one stand by a pond and sit through the middle of the day and then switch over for the evening hunt. Hopefully I can get a doe to sacrifice herself.
  14. This morning was cold and calm, but of course that was a weekday and no chance for me to hunt. The weekend will be warm and with a unwanted south wind. I don't even have a south wind stand for mornings. Full moon and clear night doesn't exactly help get those nocturnal bucks up and about during the day. I just want a cold morning with a northern wind on the weekend. Didn't get it this bow season. Maybe I will send the weatherman some chocolates for muzzleloader season.
  15. ESEE I have a RAT-3 and a custom leather sheath that goes with me on all appropriate adventures. I would like to pick up an ESEE-5 for larger jobs. They are great designs.
  16. Well, I plan on doing some yote hunting after deer season. I have seen a couple and hear them just about every evening I hunt.
  17. It's a .50 cal. I got some Triple 7 pellets and some 250gr T/C Shockwave sabots to try. Probably going to get some 200gr sabots too.
  18. I was without a muzzleloader so I picked up a new T/C Impact at Midsouth Shooters Supply last friday. I mounted a Bushnell Banner 3-9x40 black powder scope on it today. They match up pretty well. I plan on sighting it in on Sunday the TGO member shoot at the Montgomery Shooting Complex. I am hoping my daughter can get a good buck this year and I believe ML season is the best opportunity.
  19. Congrats on your season start. I have been trying to "doe up" but just can't get them where I need them.
  20. Thanks to wd-40 for alerting me to the thread. If he hadn't I wouldn't have made it cause I never remember to check this section. So... I did a search for "Clarksville" and PM'd 9 other members that live in the area. Hopefully we can get up a crowd.
  21. I ain't going if WD-40 is going... I'll be there with my daughter. We are warming up for deer, so bringing her Remington .243, my Savage .22mag, T/C .50cal Muzzleloader, and I will toss the Henry .22LR in the truck. I am more than happy to bring a pink Crickett if someone else has a little girl that needs a gun to shoot. My daughter has about outgrown it. I could also bring a youth 20ga pump if someone has a kid that wants to shoot skeet.
  22. You are going to be happier with a S&W AR in .22. She is going to be happier with a little bitty pink gun that she can shoot comfortably. Not to mention that a single shot bolt action is about the perfect teaching tool. I started my daughter at 5 with a crickett. She didn't care that it only cost a 100.00. She didn't care that the trigger had a little creep. All she knew was that she was wearing out empty water bottles at 15 yards. In the end, it's going to be alot more about how fun you make the time that the two of you spend shooting than it is about the gun. Spend 100.00 on little pink rifle and then if she enjoys shooting, get her a .223 or .243 or both. I bought a .223 NEF to introduce my daughter to centerfire. Ended up selling it and steping up to a .243 Remington 700 SPS youth when she was 9.
  23. I love animals too. I hate to see any animal run over on the road. However, I have worked on farms where domestic animals are killed for food and I grew up hunting. I guess that once I was forced to make the connection between what I was eating and where it came from, I developed a realistic view of the food chain. Personally, I feel hunting is much less "barbaric", for lack of a better term, than domestic slaughter. Sure a deer may be cuter than a cow, but that should matter very little in the value of living beings. Don't take this personal, but when I hear people make statements similar to this (I eat meat, but I could never kill an animal). I feel that they are blocking out the reality of where the meat they eat comes from. That's fine. I think more people would be vegans if they had to kill their own meat or even if they had to view a slaughter. I understand why it's hard to imagine taking an animals life, but many hunters feel that same feeling early on. It's not manly to admit that you're upset at seeing a death you dealt, but it is a common feeling for first time hunters. For me, I remember being 12 years old and taking my first deer. I was so excited at first, then I was sad when I walked up to the deer and saw it laying there. Then the process of cleaning the deer brought the reality of the cycle of life. The deer wasn't a deer anymore, it was just meat. When my daughter was preparing to go deer hunting I explained the process to her. I made sure that she was ok with taking the deer's life. Her first deer fell within a couple yards of where she shot it and there was only an exited feeling from her. However, her second deer ran about 100 yards. As we began the tracking I could see she was shaken, so I asked what was wrong. She said, "Dad, I hope she isn't suffering somewhere". So, hunters are not without feelings for their game. They are, more often than not, very concerned with making clean kills, recovering their game, and eating what they kill. What I can't explain is the huge rush that comes with taking your first squirrel, rabbit, dove or deer. It is a good feeling. I would encourage you to take a hunter's safety course. Perhaps education into the sport would spark an interest for you. I would be more than happy to take you hunting and teach you the sport of hunting, not just the killing of animals.
