  1. This is how I want to hunt hogs... WD can drive behind me picking up the sausage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOfCTWy1Xlc
  2. A new series on Discovery Channel? Sorry if I am late to the game, but I didn't remember any threads on this show. I am watching it now. The two trappers in Florida are trying to catch a 400 boar. First they tried with one catch dog. WRONG. Then they got two bay dogs and caught it, but they couldn't tie it. They ended up knifing it. They looked like a couple of morons, definitely not experienced hog dog hunters. Still makes better TV than Desperate Housewives.
  3. Happily. I am lucky enough to have a couple of hunting partners that are very good at it.
  4. till turkey season. Only 8 more weeks till the youth turkey hunt. I'll be feeding about 100 pounds of corn per week till 10 days prior. I got to make sure the big flock stays on our place. Time to start tuning up the calls and packing up the vest. I am sure there is something turkey hunting related that I need to get for this season... 8 more weeks till I can call to a gobbler and I already have the fever. It's going to be bad this year. The wife better make sure there are plenty of ear plugs in the house.
  5. The last two days have been a welcomed treat for me. I took full advantage by getting in the woods both days. Saturday I went out late morning and did some hunting lease maintenance. I took down a couple of treestands, took down a couple ground blinds and put up a couple of corn feeders. I also got to do some early scouting for spring turkey season. I saw 35 turkeys and at least 7 had beards. 3 of them were big mature birds. Today I took my daughter and her friend squirrel hunting. The action was a little slow, but we had a good walk in the woods and my daughter made one perfect head shot on a gray squirrel at 25 yards. We got to see a couple fox squirrels and 5 deer too. Later we were joined by my friend and his son. We took down a couple more deer stands and did a little more woods walking. I was glad to see that the turkeys found the corn feeder the first morning it was out and we got another chance to see the flock. All in all we had a great morning and got the kids out of the house for a few hours.
  6. Unfortunately for all of us law abiding hunters, the laws are not likely to change because it makes it harder for the TWRA to make a case against the bad guys. With the TWRA lobbying law makers to keep their job as easy as possible, we are not likely to get far.
  7. I would hunt over bait if legal. I don't since it's illegal. I hunt with a compound bow, but I don't mind crossbows. I think I have the advantage over crossbows in most cases. I do know what you are talking about though. Some of my favorites are the "internet expert hog hunters". I have killed a few hogs and I didn't follow all the internet rules, but I lived through it somehow. Just remember if you are going to hunt hogs on the internet, you have a have a .454, .480 or .500 hand cannon or a .458 double rifle with a .500 backup on your hip and 2 buddies with slug guns on either side of you.
  8. I have one that I love shooting. I put an older weaver 7/8" scope on mine, but it was more fun with the iron sights. I did upgrade to the metal front sight and barrel band when I first bought mine. I ordered them from Henry for not much money. Mine shoots the Winchester 333's pretty good.
  9. whatever it takes to get more people shooting. Women, girls, kids, gays, I don't care what they are, I am glad they are buying guns and supporting the sport. I don't like blue pickup trucks, but I know why they sell them. My daughter loved her pink crickett. She was proud of it and it kept her interested in shooting. That was when she was 5. Now she is 12 and got a pink bow for Christmas. Guess what? She loves shooting it too. Like I said, whatever color it takes to peak an interest in our sport.
  10. A scope is definitely in the "you get what you pay for" category. I have a weaver RV7 rimfire scope on a savage and I have been pleased with it. I like putting a rimfire scope on a .22 because they are usually smaller and lighter and more size appropriate for a .22 rifle. Check the classified for a nice used rimfire scope. Leupold, Nikon, Weaver, Mueller all make nice rimfire scopes. I have also had pretty good luck with the higher priced Bushnells. I haven't had good luck with Tasco, but lots of folks use them and are happy with them.
  11. LOL good thing you remain invisible cause the gay deer would be licking their lips over your spandex biker shorts... Just kiddin
  12. Allow hunting over feeding sites for deer. Must be an established feeding site that is maintained year round to hunt over. Same as Florida's regs.
  13. I got back about 40 pounds of smoked summer sausage from Hunter's Harvest. I had cheddar added to half and jalapeños added to the other half. I am extremely happy with the sausage. I cut the sticks down in thirds, wrapped with saran wrap and then foil and froze most of it. I did sample extensively last night and both flavors were well accepted with girls of the house too. I will go back next year. BTW, everyone I had dealings with there were friendly and helpful.
  14. I'd love a video of you rolling in the leaves. It is a good way to pick up some natural cover scent, I am just afraid it would set off my allergies.
  15. I am going to go off topic for one second... Go to bass pro and buy a set of Endura Skin base layer top and bottom. I wear this hot or cold weather and it is wonderful stuff. It never get a stinky smell, no matter how much you sweat into it. I have gone on extended hunts in south Florida and worn the same set for 3 days of hard sweating. Never has stunk when I put it on or taken it off. It just kills odor. I would not tell you to waste your hard earned money. If you are serious about odor control or just want to be comfortable, this is the shizz. Keeps you from rubbing raw, chaffing, keeps sweat off your skin so you stay warm in winter and cool in summer. Best thing I have purchased in years.
  16. Let us know how you like the job they do. It is close to where I hunt, so I would give them a try next year.
  17. Near Clarksville... I have had a couple deer processed at a place just passed Hilltop. I didn't know the name, but it's in a workshop behind the guys house. Turn on Palmyra road next to the BP station on 149 at Hilltop. The place is just a mile or so down on the right. I was not unhappy with the job they did. They processed it the way I asked and were pretty fast. The only thing I didn't care for was the amount of blood left in the meat. I guess I am spoiled from doing my own, but I get all the blood out before I package. I wish I had asked them to let my deer hang for a few days to help bleed out. I just thaw and rinse, so no big deal. I will say that their deer breakfast sausage is excellent. I will take a deer back there next season to get more breakfast sausage. I took my last deer to a place over on HWY 79 (Dover Road) just about a couple miles off 41A. The name of the place is Hunter's Harvest. They do a lot of deer up here and sometimes are full, or that is what I have been told. I got this whole deer done in summer sausage, but I don't have it back yet, so I can't give a good review. I did eat some of their summer sausage last year that a friend gave me and it was very good. They do all kinds of specialty stuff like sausages, jerky and bratwurst. I will update when I get this doe back. There is another place that I think is called Trail's End, not 100% sure. I believe they do taxidermy and processing. I got a recommendation for them, but haven't tried them. Not even sure where they are, but I believe it is over off 48/13 near the bridge over the Cumberland.
  18. Congrats on a fine looking doe.
  19. I really like camo. I buy more every year. For me, I don't think it's as important for deer hunting, especially rifle hunting. But I love to bow hunt and I love to turkey hunt. Camo does play a role in both of those. I drew on a big old doe one day and she looked straight up the tree at me. If I had not been wearing my ASAT 3-D leafy suit, I believe she would not have looked back down and picked up another acorn. She couldn't see me 10 yards away. I like Realtree APG as far as popular patterns go. I like the ASAT leafy suit for really hiding from deer, turkey or coyotes. I have heavy fleece bibs and coat in Natural Gear camo because I think it is a good neutral color for late season when I would be wearing very warm clothes. I think the old 3 color desert camo works the best for my eyes in the winter around here. My uncle used to wear it and I could never see him in the woods. For me, I like lighter camo patterns better than darker patterns. I think the darker ones blob up in certain conditions. More than the fact that it hide me in the woods, I want other's to know I am a hunter. I want to show I am in the brotherhood. Also, I am religious about NOT wearing cotton in the woods. I spend the extra money to have good wicking base layers, wicking and breathable and fast drying mid and outer layers. I have extra light, fast drying outer layers for warm weather. I have light, mid weight and arctic weight mid layers so I can layer up and best suit the temperature. I have mid and heavy weight water-proof, breathable outer layers. Gore-Tex and micro-fleece offer hunters light weight, packable warmth. If I am going to spend the cash to have good clothing, then I am going to buy it in some camo pattern. Maybe it's just that the advertising has me brainwashed, but I like it.
  20. Beanie tracked her second deer today. I got invited out to a friend's farm for a deer drive today, the last day of regular gun season. I took "Bean" with me in the hopes that someone would shoot a deer and I would have a chance to work her. Well one of the kids shot a doe, so I got Bean out of the truck and started her where they saw the deer leave the field and enter the woods. She hit blood very quickly. She was wild as a buck today, so it was a little more work. She was hot on the trail but the woods were thick and she just wanted to get down the trail fast. I was nervous about her staying on the right trail, but she looked like she was hot, so I just let her go. I was seeing blood here and there, so I knew she was on the right trail. She pulled me up a hill to a brier patch and straight into the briers. No sooner than we got in that mess, the doe jumped up and covered another 150 yards before disappearing over another ridge. She got back on the trail, but the deer went across a creek and over a long rocky area and she was having a hard time staying on trail. She hit a few times, but there wasn't enough blood for me to be sure she was on the wounded deer. We worked another half hour or so, but finally threw in the towel. I didn't count this as a failure though. She did great and found the deer the first time, just like she was supposed to. The kid just didn't make a great hit and the deer sure didn't look weak on the run when we jumped her. Tonight we are picking briers out and staying warm. Next weekend we have one more chance with the final weekend being a youth rifle hunt. A few of us are taking our kids out for a deer drive on a farm that didn't get hunted this year. I would like for Bean to work one more trail this year and hopefully recover another deer. I really need some blood for the freeze to work her with over the off-season too.
  21. Careful, you can only chase fox at night.
  22. If I have a big deer in the area I won't shoot anything else. I may go empty that year, but I am going to hunt the big boy if I know he is there.
