  1. Jeff, I plan to take my daughter back to Alaska for some salmon fishing in a couple years. She was born in Anchorage, while her mom and I were stationed at Ft. Richardson. I loved the time I was there and took in as much hunting and fishing as I could. I caught my first king at Ship creek. My wife got her first king at Ninilchik. Reds at the Russian and silvers at Ship were some good times. We also did the Copper river dipnet trip a couple times. When my daughter is old enough to appreciate the trip, I will take her back. Be sure to give us a yell when you are in Nashville so we can shake hands and have a cup of coffee. I'd appreciate knowing someone to get a good fishing report from before our trip.
  2. It is legal to hunt deer in TN with a .223. I bought a .223 handi rifle for my daughter to use when she was much younger, but never could get it to shoot well. Winchester makes a 64 grain Power Point in their Super-X line that I planned to use. I have seen lots of pictures of kids with deer that were taken with their dad's AR. It makes a great platform to introduce kids to centerfire rounds.
  3. I will share with y'all a staple of my kitchen. I make this up and keep it around all year. I am seldom without it. It makes a great stand alone sauce or a starting point/add in for other bbq sauces. I have altered this over the years but originally developed it to go with smoked wild pig down in Florida. It goes good with all wild game and pork. You can add any store bought BBQ sauce a little at a time if the vinegar is too much for you or if it is too spicy for your taste. I use Neely's because I can get it locally at Walmart and I like it best in this sauce. If you don't like hot, don't use Neely's Spicy, it is too warm for some folks. You can use a sweet BBQ sauce, but they tend to burn if you are using them to baste during smoking or grilling. I keep the sugars low in the sauce to keep it from burning easily. Mix all this together is a big jar or jug and shake it till the salt dissolves. You can brush this on a little during the last hour of smoking. I just put a bowl of it on the table and spoon a little over my smoked pork/venison/ect. Hot Carolina Vinegar Sauce 2 1/2 Cups of White Vineger (or apple cider vinager if you like it) 1/2 bottle of Neely's Spicy BBQ sauce 1/2 cup of water 2 tablespoons of brown sugar (white sugar works too) 4 teaspoons of salt 4 teaspoons of Red pepper flakes (like you put on pizza) 2 tablespoon of hot sauce (Crystal or Tabasco or your fovorite) 1 teaspoon of black pepper 1 teaspoon of white pepper 1 teaspoon of dry rub (still good without this) I have my own rub, but a store bought rub is fine. 2 teaspoon of cayanne pepper Go ahead and make a double batch up in a gallon jug. You won't be sorry.
  4. This looks suspiciously like a recipe I got from a previous neighbor... It is good stuff.
  5. Buy a turkey call at Walmart, as soon as they put them on the shelf in early March. Take it out to the front of the store and start scratching on it. If your lucky a turkey hunter will come along and adopt you. Honestly, ask around at work, at the gun range, at the gun shop, ect. If you have some turkey hunting land, I'd be happy to travel down and teach you what little I know. I wish I had huge tracks of private land with hundreds of birds, but that's not the case for most of us. I do have some videos that I have watch enough to pass along. PM me your address if you'd like to watch them.
  6. Something like.... I need my toe nails trimmed...GunTroll is a big time toe-nail chewer...Perfect match!!!
  7. No experience with swackers. I did use a head that was similar in design years ago. I didn't have good results with them. My concern with the design of the swacker and other similar heads is the long "point" before you reach the cutting surface AND the wide "perpendicular" blades. I am sure that they will kill deer well, so long as you have lots of KE with your bow setup. Much like the Rage, they require lots of force to push the wide cutting surface through, but if you have the energy, then they leave huge holes. I don't have enough draw length to get high KE, so I have to choose heads that will push through easier. I have been using short tipped mechanicals like the Rocket Steelheads and Wasp JakHammers but this year I am going to try the Magnus Stingers.
  8. This is the best venison ever, period. The key is cooking to medium-rare to medium and not drying it out. This will do one backstrap or both inside tenderloins: 1 cup of brown sugar 1 cup of soy sauce 1/2 pound of bacon Cut the backstrap in medallions about the width of a slice of bacon. The thicker cut allows you to grill it to a nice brown without overcooking. After slicing, wrap each medallion in a 1/2 slice of bacon. Marinate the slice, bacon-wrapped medallions in the soy and brown sugar for a minimum of 4 hours. I usually fix these around lunch and then grill for dinner. Grill over hot coal for about 10-12 minutes. I use toothpicks to hold the bacon in place, or I use kabob skewers to hold several. This makes it easier to turn over and works well for me. If using the smaller inside tenderloins, you can leave both tenderloins whole and wrap both together into one bacon wrapped log. Grill whole for about 12 minutes and then slice after allowing to rest for 5 minutes or so. Just a warning, married women have left their husbands after tasting my grilled backstrap. Don't fix this in mixed company without taking appropriate precautions. For reference, this is the place i started, I just made changes to make it easier to cook and eat : Sweet Bacon-Wrapped Venison Tenderloin Recipe - Food.com - 139664
  9. I use doe in heat during the pre-rut and rut phases, or even post rut. I don't usually use the non- heat pee. I use fox pee on the soles of my boots. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk.
  10. Porcupine was my first guess. I have seen beavers cut trees that high, or higher, but only when they were standing on a few feet of snow.
  11. This rain should soak your plots good, as long as it doesn't float the seeds off.
  12. Robertson county leased field was slow on the 1st. I am thinking of checking the Haynes Bottom field today. I talked to a guy at wal-mart last night that had run out of shells on a great afternoon hunt yesterday, but it was private land. Farmers are cutting corn all around Adams, TN and Oak Grove, KY. I drove out the Middle Tennessee Gunsmithing near Springfield yesterday. I saw lots of great looking fields, but not many birds on the lines. Good luck and let us know if you find a good spot.
  13. You wear socks with your crocs?
  14. Tell her when you are able to smell a deer 300 yards away and hear a twig snap 100 yards away and gain the ability to walk silently through the woods, then you will be ready to fight fair. Till then, we only have our brains and the contraptions our brains invent.
  15. I guess we'll have to tie a string between tin cans.
  16. The only time I have had a checking station come out to look at my deer was when I killed a good buck. I used the internet check in for a deer last year. I didn't like not immediately getting the weather-proof replacement temporary kill tag. Also my printer was out of ink so I just saved the permanent tag to my computer. As to leaving the head in the woods, I'd say you can leave the head, so long as you maintain the sex organs. I would think that since the wording is that you have to "sign" the permanent kill tag to validate it, then checking in on the iphone wouldn't be much advantage.
  17. I have way too much gear. I have way too many gadgets. I am guilty of carrying way to much crap afield. I am getting better though. I got a turkey vest that holds less stuff. Thus I carry less stuff. I got a smaller hunting pack so I carry less crap. Usually the first hunt of the season I have way too much stuff. By the end of season I have dropped the pack, stuffed a flashlight and a roll of flagging tape in my cargo pocket and a belt knife. Here is what is almost always useful to me: Flashlight - I usually carry two or three Flagging tape - never hunt without it binoculars - when I don't have them, I wish I did. Thermacell - required for bowhunting during skeeter season iPhone - so I can text GunTroll to tell him I am cold and ain't seen crap all week. Everything else can usually stay in the truck. If I know I am going for a long walk, I will pack some food/water/first aid to take with me just in case.
  18. Only good report I have heard. Congrats.
  19. I took my daughter and her friend to the leased field in Robertson Co. I fired all of 8 shells. I killed two birds. The girls fired about 6 shells between them. It was slow. It was also hot. I am supposed to take a couple more kids on Saturday, but I won't unless things improve. We had fun anyway. The kids enjoyed laying out of school and I enjoyed laying out of work.
  20. I went and scouted the field we are hunting tomorrow. There were a few birds, but it was late when I was there, so who knows what tomorrow holds.
  21. Resend the directions, I must have deleted them...
  22. many fields have been updated: Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - Dove Hunting
  23. Dogs may or may not be allowed depending on the WMA. The safest bet is to contact the WMA manager. Usually we try to get on the field early if on a WMA hunt. Usually we set up as early as 8 or 9 am if allowed. The later you wait the more crowed it will be and the less prime spots will be left. I have never used a blind on a dove hunt. We just sit along a field edge or under a tree or in some small amount of cover if available. I haven't been on any terrible public hunts. They are sometimes a little crowded or a little slow, but I like a lot of shooters to keep the birds moving.
