  1. I took a nice Nikon Monarch and a Mueller Eradicator to the range and viewed them side by side. Even though the Mueller had higher magnification, the Nikon was noticeably clearer. Edge clarity is another factor, but usually less important. The last seconds of usable daylight is when you make your money back on more expensive scopes. A couple mid priced scopes that I have been very happy with are the Bushnell Elite 3200 series (has a rainguard coating that works well), the Nikon Buckmaster and Pro Series, and the Leupold VX-1.
  2. I almost got a shot on some hens with my bow this afternoon. It was hurrying for a late afternoon hunt and caught movement in front of me. I got behind a bush and crept up to within 50 yards of the hens. I ran out of cover and time was ticking. They were heading away so I tried to cover 10 more yards when their heads were down, but they spooked. The came back in close to my stand to roost, but not close enough for a shot. I also had to run deer out from under my stand to leave tonight. It was a busy afternoon. I could have shot a huge raccoon too.
  3. LOL! I am going to toss a shotgun in the truck just incase I see one on my way to work. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk.
  4. I would be for a permit issued by TWRA to qualifying families that allowed taking a deer anytime of year, X number of deer per permit, to feed a hungry family. However, there currently is no such permit, so taking a deer outside of season/rules, is still poaching. I would also like to see TWRA start a roadkill program. In Alaska, you put your name on a list and when a Moose is hit by a car, the state troopers call you and you have to go then and get the deer. Why couldn't the TWRA have a call list for each county and offer roadkill deer to individuals that need/want food. Is there a difference between poaching and stealing? Would stealing steaks from Wal-mart be different than poaching a deer? Both are expressly illegal. Sure, our surrounding counties have an abundance of deer, especially does, but that has only been achieved through seasons and bag limits. It's easy for me to make excuses about why I speed, but in the end I am just breaking the law. If I believed that the person that shot this doe was hungry, I might could by into the sympathy for the hungry debate, but there is a much great chance that these two were just too lazy to archery hunt, too lazy to get up before daylight, too lazy to drive to a public hunting area, and took advantage of an easy opportunity. I do believe they will eat the deer, but not that they needed it to feed their family. With the price of gas and bullets, they would be better off to buy Ramen Noodles. I have broken game laws in years past, so I am not judging anyone. However, I hope everyone that poaches a deer is caught and convicted by the TWRA.
  5. Sorry! I didn't mean to keep her so long this morning.
  6. I have seen this done with a boat trailer winch also. We have tried it on hogs, but nearly pulled the 4"x4" wooden hanging frame down in the process. We were using an ATV to pull. Later my buddy put a screw in anchor eye for tying down a house trailer directly below the point where he pulls up the deer/hogs. Then he put a cable pulley on it and mounted the boat winch to the side. This made the cable pull straight down. Only problem then was running out of room once the skin got about 3/4 of the way off. The hide would get to the pulley before the animal was completely skinned.
  7. I carry a backpack. What's in it depends on time of year, where I am hunting, what I am hunting, what I am hunting with, ect. There is always a first aid kit, whistle, compass (non-electric), extra flashlight and extra batteries, flagging tape, matches, a big knife and some 550 cord.
  8. BTW, it is definitely not rifle season, or any firearm season for deer. They were definitely breaking the law. As previously mentioned, if they were close to a residence, they may have broken more laws. Call during business hours, insist on filing a report.
  9. WD, who is that ugly dude holding your deer's head up while you took the picture??? I hope your camera is ok. Congrats on the deer folks!
  10. Some of ya'll may be aware of Permethrin and Permanone, but I think it's my duty to inform the world. The way this works is, you spray your clothes, let it dry, and enjoy tick/chigger/mosquito free outdoor trips. I spray all my hunting clothes and gear. I have been using this for the last couple years and I have been tick and chigger free while wearing treated clothing. The other two things I do to help is tuck in my shirt and tuck my pants into my boots. I hate chiggers and even worse than chiggers are seed ticks. Permanone is the commercially available aerosol spray sold as tick or mosquito repellent. REPEL recently changed the name on their can, but it's still orange and blue. Coulston's sells it under the name Duranon. They all work well, but can get expensive. I found a cheaper solution on the internet. Permethrin is the key ingredient in the commercial aerosol sprays. Permethrin is also sold as a livestock and lawn treatment chemical. I buy it in the 10% solution and cut it back to the .5%. This is the same percentage used in the aerosols. I mix 1 ounce of Permethrin 10% with 20oz of water in a 24oz plastic spray bottle. Shake well before each use. DurationTM Permethrin 10% Concentrate claims to be the only EPA registered permethrin 10% concentrate approved for use on clothing. The problem is that it can be hard to find. Duration also sells ready to use .5% solutions. Amazon.com: DurationTM Caution: many Permethrin agricultural products are oil based to aid sticking. Use on clothing could result in stained clothing and long drying time and isn't recommended. Also some agricultural products also contain Piperonyl Butoxide(PBO) which is toxic. Lots of guys are using the agro products, but I have found what I believe to be an acceptable alternative. This is the Permethrin I buy: Amazon.com: Permethrin 10%: Sports & Outdoors Martins doesn't claim to be EPA clothing approved, but it doesn't list petroleum or PBO in the ingredients. The consensus I have come to while researching all the do's and don't is that most of the 10% Permethrin is probably fine when cut to .5%, just avoid the ones that list PBO in the ingredients. You can find Permethrin 10% at Rural King and Tractor Supply Company or your local CO-OP. I keep a spray bottle mixed up and spray my clothes each time I wash them. The commercial products state that they last through 2 washings, but I don't want to push my luck. I keep a can of the aerosol in the truck and hit my boots and pants legs before walking in too. This has come in handy when wearing work clothes and deciding to check a game cam or do a little spontaneous scouting. My experience is that once these products dry, they have no odor.
  11. I am using Triple 7 pellets in the black box, TC Shockwave Super Glides 250gr sabots and Winchester Triple 7 209 primers. I am only shooting 100grs of powder and getting good results. I sighted in with 100gr loads so the kick would be less when my daughter shoots. The groups were good out to 100 yards, so I left everything alone.
  12. Never been there. What are you training them for? Raccoon? Squirrel?
  13. Don't be a victim of human nature. If you hunt a stand for 3 days and don't see a deer, don't go back to that stand. Move to a new spot. I know hunters that put up a stand and hunt it all year, every time they hunt. The deer learn our patterns too. You may have the stand in a good spot, but you may just need to lay off it for a week or two. Don't be scared to get down and walk when things are slow. I love stalking when the wind is blowing or a light rain is falling. I'm just saying that if the same old same old isn't getting it done, change it up.
  14. Congrats! I missed the opening weekend. Maybe I can get out this week.
  15. I have been out to Sevenmile several times, but I wasn't hunting animals. My stepdad was working for the state and Auburn University on a Native American burial site. We would run across in a john boat and one morning I got to see a big buck swimming across to the island. We motored up pretty close to it and watched it swim. I didn't know there were hogs on the island. There may not have been way back then. That was close to 20 years ago.
  16. The Hunter Safety Systems Pro Vest is probably the most popular. However, I have tried one on and it is heavy and bulky, IMHO. Can you imagine having 3 seatbelt buckles on your vest? Imagine the old Chevy center push button seat belts... I am looking hard at the Go Muddy Safeguard harness. I like a light, barely there harness. I have one that came with a cheap lock on that I use now, but it is a PITA to put on. I think the Go Muddy will work for what I want.
  17. I picked up a pair of the Leupold Yosemite 8X30 binos last year. I am very pleased with them. They are medium sized and so much nicer to use than the pocket sized pairs I tried. I have seen them on sale online for very reasonable prices. Rural King has them too.
  18. I am thinking about leaving Regions also. However, for 4.00 a month I have a hard time convincing myself that it's worth the hassle. There aren't many local banks that offer the same level of convenience that I can get from a national bank. Note, I did not say service, I said convenience. My wife works for a local bank, so I may have to change to her bank.
  19. Looks interesting. I am going to research it some.
  20. I am going to pick up one of these tree seats too.
  21. OK, what is the one piece of hunting equipment that you need more than anything else? A GPS? A Bow? An ATV? A Treestand? I am missing a quality blind. I have a cheap one that works in some situations, but I need a better one.
  22. after doing a little research, I have been able to determine that it is, without a doubt, the territorial markings of a band of flying butt monkeys from Uranus. You may want to avoid the area.
  23. I have had a lot of first hand experience with Hornady 300 grain XTPs. I used them on hogs for a number of years with excellent results. If your gun will shoot them, they are a good choice. I am sure the 240gr version would be just as good on deer.
