  1. My daughter was shooting a Taurus 94 with a 4" barrel at 10. It is the same weight as most steel j-frame guns. She complained a bit about the weight the first outing, but she quickly grew accustom to it. I took my step-mother and wife shooting last weekend and even using semi-wadcutters in the Taurus Ultra Light, they still complained about the recoil and hand slap. I think if you want to go with a j-frame, go with the steel and go with a 3 or 4 inch barrel. You may also want to look at the .327 mag. Then he could shoot lightweight .32's to start with.
  2. The crappy weather has kept me home. I don't have the itch bad enough to hunt in bad weather this year. GunTroll and I were talking last night about 2 years ago when we hunted the Missouri rifle season and it rained every single day. It broke me from wanting to hunt in the rain for a bit.
  3. Nothing about the felonies should prevent him from buying a hunting license. Possessing a firearm is another story, and one I can't answer. He can bow hunt if inclined...
  4. WD, they aren't just north of the river anymore. I was hunting an area south of the river during Muzzleloader season and found unmistakable hog sign. This wasn't on the refuge, but is managed by JG's employer. Well, it's supposed to be managed by them, it doesn't get many patrols. Not that it matters, we can't shoot them there either. My guess is that "the management" doesn't even know there is a population of hogs in there. I was surprised to find sign south of the river, I haven't heard about anyone seeing a hog in the area. My guess is that they have been released there. It's not impossible that they swam the river, but highly unlikely. I figure that since the refuge is getting attention, that they found another place to establish a population. It is still legal to shoot them if they attack me, right? Have you ever seen that South Park episode? "Look out, he's coming right for us!"
  5. I read a quote that they made this decision based on recommendation from other states with hog problems and wanted to model management plans that had worked in those states. Well, if you look at Florida, Texas, Georgia and Oklahoma (states with long established hog population, long term management programs) they all allow liberal hunting of hogs, including baiting, night hunting, no limit, no closed seasons. But hey, what the heck do they know about hogs... One thing they will all tell you is that if you make the wrong choices early, then you will forever have hog populations that will continue to grow in multiples. Hunting/shooting wild pigs with or without bait, night and day, is not enough to control a hog population and will never be enough to eradicate wild hogs. This has been well proven, but it has also been proven that hunting IS a great compliment to trapping. You can't trap them all, you can't shoot them all. You have to do both to make a dent. Here is a good breakdown of laws per state: Wild Hog Hunting for Wild Hog Hunters - Hog and Boar Hunting for Real Hunters - Hog Hunting Laws If you want to learn more about the truth about having wild hogs, read a few of these: http://www.myfwc.com/media/1357551/WildPigManagementAL.pdf http://www.berrymaninstitute.org/pdf/managing-feral-pigs.pdf Animal Industry Services Feral Swine: Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food & Forestry Good informative video: MSSTATEwfaTV's Channel - YouTube
  6. I am not going to type the evil things I am thinking I would do in this situation.
  7. I would suggest that this owner may not be the one that abused the dog. Hunting hounds are often sold many times. I can't believe the guy doesn't want the collar back, even if he truly doesn't want the dog.
  8. Well you got a revolver guy, and a couple 1911 guys recommended, but we still don't know what you are looking for. So, I will recommend a rifle guy. Home
  9. well, I typed a long response about my dislike for this type of activity, but I hit the wrong button... The jest of it was, unless you have reasonable suspicion that I am breaking the law, then wait by the truck to check my license. I am not likely to be all smiles if my hunt is interrupted for a license check. Deer hunting ain't like fishing and dove hunting, where a license check cause no interference.
  10. Good idea. I used to salt chicken livers to toughen them, but putting a hunk of chicken skin on there would work well too.
  11. skinned, sliced thin, rolled in flour and pan fried... Yummy.
  12. You need to immediately clean that deer, cut out the backstraps, wash carefully and bring to me for disposal. The rest of the meat will be fine, I just need the backstrap for my testing.

  14. I don't usually call. I will blow a grunt tube right at day break on a windy day. I will turn up a doe-in-heat can if I see a buck passing by. Other than that I just like to sit still and be quite.
  15. Sorry, I don't do foot rubs, I'm more of an S&M guy. WD, if you need anything, you got my number. Don't be shy.
  16. Check out the CZ rifles. I have Howard's lots of good reports. I read a website recently about a guy that was building a 1000 yard rifle for less than 500.00. It was interesting. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk.
  17. Well, they don't give classes. It was just 1 class for employees and spouses, but it is a great local bank. They recently changed from a Federal charter to a State charter which forced a name change. They were First Federal Savings Bank, now it's First Advantage Bank. Local to Clarksville. 18. I use the Cumberland City branch. However, if you bank near Barksdale, give First Advantage ( formally First Federal) a try. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk.
  19. My wife works for a local bank. I took my CCW class at the bank with the majority of the bank's officers and their spouses. I haven't seen the signs at our local Region's, but I will be checking.
  20. I have only done 1, but I found a step by step online. I remember I first cut and scraped away all I could then boiled the skull. There was a mixture of Elmer's glue that I coated the skull with at the end. It wasn't hard but I did it over a few weekends as time allowed. I was in Florida at the time so the very first thing I did was stick it in a fire ant bed. Yours looks about like mine did coming out of the ant bed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk.

    Painting sights

Brownell's sells a Bright Sights paint kit for less than 20.00. I have lots of good reviews about them. They come with a cleaner/primer too. If you go with wallyworld paint, make sure you get acrylic paint and use a wooden toothpick to fill the indents on the sights. Let it dry overnight. Orange in the back, Green in the front is my favorite.
  22. You questioned if he is responsible enough for a gun yet. I'd say no. Not because he is less responsible than other 9 year olds, but because he IS 9 years old. My kid was very careful with her gun at 9, but not good enough to be left unattended with it. You just have to keep him at arm's length till you are sure he is mature enough to be alone. I was about 11 when I got to walk around the farm with a .410. I had a BB gun since I was about 7. I shot a few cows with BB's and got my butt beat, but I was a kid and would sneek and do it again. I nearly shot my foot off when I was 11 with the .410. I was probably safe enough at 13. I was just lucky before that. I would highly recommend the Henry lever action. It has been my daughter's favorite gun since the first time I let her shoot it. She picks it over semi-autos and bolt guns. She is also a good shot with it. She bet me she could hit a squirrel in the ear hole at 40 yards last year. She did it too. My point is that she loves that gun and has great confidence with it. Confidence is the key. He's probably gonna have "fun" with any gun you get him. He will love a gun that he can hit what he wants with. He's old enough that you can get him a .22 this year and a .20gauge pump next year.
  23. I am left handed and just purchased a Remington 700 SPS in 7mm-08. I like Savage too, as well as the Ruger. All are available in left handed models. I am a short action fan so I stick with .243, 7mm-08 and .308 usually. I am happy with the Remington. I have also owned a Tikka that was a nice gun. They offer them in left hand now.
