  1. Way to go Cody. Glad to see he got the 7mm-08.
  2. I'll shoot one if they wonder by my deer stand during archery, but I don't go after them in the fall. I might shoot a silver hen or a bearded hen, but I'd usually pass on hens. I am sure we would benefit from fewer hens, I just can't bring myself to end my hunting day with a hen.
  3. Never hunted it, but I have hiked a lot of it. I am always looking for deer sign while hiking. There is a lot of acorns and other mast this year.Good luck, let us know how you do.
  4. Nice piggy Dave. Glad to see you got another one.
  5. There is a local guy that has an albino crow he raised. Not legal at all.
  6. Congrats on the deer. I am always out of town on the opening weekend, but hopefully I can get up a tree this weekend.
  7. Rock Island is pretty, but the hike to the swimming hole/beach is not a cake walk. Fall Creek Falls is awesome, but like stated, it's usually crowded. Big South Fork has a nice campground, RV style. The day hiking would be great at Big South Fork. You can see caves, huge overlooks, mountain streams. Tims Ford State Parks is nice. Hiking wouldn't compare to the others though. South Cumberland has some great hiking, but not sure about the RV camping.
  8. Rebel Crickhopper - a black and a brown one. RoosterTails - various sizes and colors, but always a black one a couple of the smallest weighted bobbers and a few popper flys.
  9. Did you get your gun? I suggest hitting the skeet range a few times before heading out for birds. You will be a happier hunter.
  10. LBL has some low impact trails that are easy hiking with good lake side camping opportunities. If you want better views, with less fishing, check out Big South Fork. If you go to BSF, just go to the welcome station and tell them how far you want to go and how long you want to be gone. They will help you map a route.
  11. We have two employees that raise wolf hybrids. They try to keep them at a high percentage of wolf. That said, they are worthless individuals for the most part and when they raise a litter and can't sell all the pups, I am sure they release them. They can't afford to feed too many of them, even picking up road kill deer. I believe this is a hybrid mix.
  12. I heard a fair amount of shooting around the house, but the weather has been spotty here. I didn't make it out to hunt. First opening day I have missed in several years.
  13. Lots of opportunities in Tennessee. Are both of you experienced backpackers? Big South Fork has some good options. Land Between the Lakes is good too, much flatter, but much less "wild". How many miles do you want to hike?
  14. I may head over to the Robertson County lease field. It's only a couple miles from my house. The field looks good, but I didn't sit there to see if there were any birds.
  15. I don't think you would have any trouble trading a canoe for a small john boat. I've ran lines in both and the flat bottom wins out. It's just too shaky pulling a big cat into a canoe. Watch craigslist for a small flat bottom.
  16. Sorry, I don't buy into the "go heavy or go home" for hogs. If I had a 400 pound boar charging me, then I would want something big too, but that isn't likely. If you have the option of carrying a large bore handgun as a backup, that wouldn't be a bad idea. However, anything you use to hunt deer is sufficient for hogs. Shoot them in the neck and be done with it.
  17. Nice bulls Troutburger! Nothing better than a big strong run of bulls to get the blood flowing.
  18. I'm not sure if blue runners are an upgrade or downgrade from crocs Nice yote.
  19. Check out the Ugly Stick intercostal series. I have an ultralight rod i used in south Florida and it held up great. I'd say look for the longest ultralight you can find. Te problem is that most are under 6 foot poles. I like a 7' in the ocean.
  20. Thanks for the link Rob. Let me know how you like the set up. I don't have the advantage of fly fishing experience. I did give it a go in Alaska, but quickly switched back to spinning rods after a few frustrating weeks.
  21. Anyone have any experience with Tenkara fishing? I saw a guy fishing with a Tenkara rod on the red river during a canoe trip a few weeks back. He was wearing out panfish. The idea is very appealing to me. Many of the rods can be broken down into a small package, no reel, just lightweight rod, line and a fly. I'd like to add a set up to my backpacking gear for small rivers and creeks. Ultralight and easy to carry. I thought of WD-40 and his new found trout addiction, this would be just the ticket on those FTCKY streams.
  22. The backcountry permit at BSF is simple as pie. They really just want to know your trip plan incase they have to come look for you. The 5.00 probably helps pay some bills. I'd happily pay 20.00 for the same permit to use such a nice, uncrowded area.
  23. This is around the corner from my house. Glad we're moving out to the country in a month.
  24. Land between the Lakes offers what you are looking for. Big South Fork is WAY more off the grid. I hiked 20 miles on the 4th and 5th of July and never saw another person. The views are, IMHO, as good as the Smokies, without the crowds. Savage Gulf/South Cumberland is a beautiful back county area with great views too. You should try all 3 because they are all worth the drive.
