1. Saw this on FB this morning. Got to do some research. Sure sounds crappy.
2. Well if we are going to call it "primitive weapons" season, then shouldn't it be only a spear or a club? Where do you draw the line? Remember the old argument that compound bows should have their own season and traditional archery should be left alone. Then along came crossbows and eventually they got added to the "archery" season. What impact has that had? The way I see it is that we get more people in the woods.    I don't care what Cabela's says or any muzzle loader website. The fact is that it is much easier to shoot consistently with a centerfire cartridge than it is from a powder charge topped by a sabot feed into the muzzle. It is faster to reload with a centerfire. There is a distinct difference. The is also a distinct difference between a sidelock and a 209 inline. Just like there is a difference between an open sights 30/30 and a hopped up 300 WIN MAG. Choose what you want to hunt with or what you have available. No one forces a hunter to choose a 209 inline. Use what you want. If you choose a sidelock, why does that need a special season? To reduce the number of hunters during that season? Certainly it's not entirely correct to lump inlines in to the centerfire category.    Honestly, I would vote for a South Carolina type season. Everything opens on the same day and it all closes the same day. I hope every hunter that goes to the woods kills his limit each day and I hope everyone that is able hunts. I hunt archery during gun season because I choose to. Hunt with what you want. I have killed deer on public land with a bow in late December. It's not that much of a disadvantage if you a bow hunter.  :2cents:
3. The most prevalent memory I have of using true primitive weapons when I was younger, before inline and sabots, is poorly placed shots and lost deer. There is a big difference between single shot rifles/shotguns and ML's. It's reloading. I am content with the current law. I doubt we see much season date changes. Supposedly the last round of changes was to make it easier for the dumb hunters to keep up with which season was active. Bow first, then ML, then Rifle till the end. You know we're too easily confused to have it any other way.
4. Sorry I can't make this one. Sitting on a plane at BNA headed to Milwaukee.
5. I think the only change that I would really like to see is the Buck limit reduced to 1 per year. I would support an antler restriction, like 4 points or better on one side, but I don't think that's likely. I have hunted states with antler restrictions, 4 on one side in Missouri, and minimum spreads in Georgia. Both places have seen dramatic increases in the number of mature bucks harvested. I don't care if someone wants to shoot a small buck, but most would rather shoot a bigger mature buck. It's hard to get a good established population of mature bucks when hunters are allowed to kill 3 1.5yo bucks per year. I didn't kill a buck last year. It's not looking like I will kill a buck this year. Not because I haven't had bucks within range, but because I haven't had a mature buck in range.
6. I really like the Bianchi line of nylon holsters. I think they are called accumold.
7. I usually see one or two a year. They are pretty up close.
8. Very strange. Wen you go back take a mirror and rub some buck pee on after you shave. Sure to get you a buck. LOL
9. Since you don't own the land or live on the land, you will be safest buying a license. You only need the hunt/fish combo, so it's not that expensive. Unless you are old enough to be exempt, you will need to attend a Hunter Safety Course before getting your license. The rules change alot for coyote legal weapons, so you need to be careful. You have to be licensed for big game if using centerfire firearms to hunt coyotes during a big game season, ect. http://www.tn.gov/twra/huntlicense.html http://www.tn.gov/twra/huntweapons.html
10. My daughter has been dove hunting with a 20ga since she was 9 or 10. He should have no trouble with a 20ga pump. If he is 5'4" or taller I would suggest looking at a full size 20ga. It will work for squirrel, rabbits and any game birds. You could also get into turkey hunting in the spring. I love a .22 for squirrel hunting, but a shotgun is more versatile. He could most likely handle a 12ga at 12, but that's your call. The 20ga will do all you want and more. If he's big enough for a full size, then it will last him a lifetime.
11. Nice job. Congrats to both of you.
12. I would change it. As Batman said, most manufacturers recommend changing your string every year if you shoot all year. I hunted with a guy that had a 15 year old High Country and I used to give him a hard time about upgrading or at least getting a new string. He always said, if it ain't broke, I ain't gonna fix it. Well we were hunting AEDC a couple years back and he draw on a doe. He heard the strands of the string starting to pop, he released the sting out of fear and the bow came apart when he fired. It slapped his arm good, but destroyed the bow. I used to work in a bow shop and I have seen a couple bows come apart. I would change the strings and cables if I were you.
13. I always hunt the wind, no matter what. The buck may not care about the wind, but you can bet those doe will. I don't like to over hunt areas and I don't like to burn an area if the wind is wrong. If you aren't worried about killing a mature buck, than you probably aren't going to hurt anything by hunting there. Big old bucks get that way by being smart.
14. What are you doing shooting a plastic muzzleloader?!
15. I'd suggest you call the local TWRA officer and ask if they can join you in the morning so you can confront them together. DO NOT sneak in behind them and dump sugar in their gas tank, that is illegal.
16. I passed on does again Sunday. I just can't shoot'em knowing the big boy is so very close. If I hadn't seen him in the area during the juvi hunt, I might feel differently. He had a new rub waiting for me Sunday. Congrats to all those that did score.
17. I have lived in states that allowed baiting and I have hunted over bait in those states. However, I never killed a deer over that bait. I did kill a lot of hogs that way. I don't call it hunting though, I call it "going to the grocery store for pork." I am going to buy a bag of deer corn later today. I have a feeder in my backyard. I don't hunt over it, but the Wife and I enjoy watching the deer, squirrels and other wildlife that come to the feeder. I have never seen a buck I would shoot at a feeder in the daylight. It's always does and 1.5 year old bucks. Planted food plots are WAY more productive at drawing deer than a corn feeder. Also, in my experience, deer will walk past corn to feed on acorns.
18. I passed on a small 8 pointer Saturday @ 9am. Didn't see any deer before that. Saw a few does later, but wasn't looking for a doe. Sitting in the stand now... Got a good buck in the area, so probably won't shoot anything except a big one this week.
19. Nice buck. Hope you bust him.
20. Anyone have any luck this morning? We saw a nice buck, but too far out for a shot. Saw 7 in total, but not what we were looking for. This is the first year my daughter has been selective when it came to harvesting a deer. We aren't hungry, so I don't mind if she passes on does and little bucks. I imagine if she doesn't have one by tomorrow evening, then a doe would be in serious trouble. Let's see some pics....
21. I can understand how it is overwhelming for someone that didn't grow up hunting. However, I believe that a Hunter Safety Course would help you understand the basics. It would also be easier to figure out what you want to hunt and focus your efforts there. Depending on where you plan to hunt makes a lot of difference also, private or public land.
22. I use iSolunar. There are sites on the web that sell calendars. I have found free one on the web too, just search Solunar.
