  1. I used to hunt a riverside stand and catch deer travelling between bedding and feeding areas. From my experience, they would water after feeding on their way to the bedding area. That may have just been convenience, but that's how it worked. I have hunted water sources during hot, dry bow seasons with success. Deer would come in late afternoon till dark for a drink.
  2. The Monster energy drink cans work well too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. I don't mind doing it, but I can't say I enjoy it. I try to support local processors. :) If i do my own, I usually am happier with the end product because I spend a lot of time getting it just like I want it. I start with icing the quartered deer in a cooler for a couple days to get all the blood out. That is the single most important step for getting the best finished product for me. I don't want any blood left in my meat, most processors don't let the deer hang long enough to suit me.
  4. I'd say that should be legal. However, I'd pack the meat before the head, just to remove any doubt about wasting the meat. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. Happened to me on a wild pig I shot a few years back. Reached down and grabbed his hind leg and he promptly jerked it out of my hand and kicked the fire out of me. He lost the fight. 3 more rounds of .44mag taught him his lesson. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. Skunk Ape or an Easter Bunny snow angel. Could be either, impossible to tell which without DNA testing.
  7. I used it this spring for turkey. Worked well.
  8. They removed the barrel length and caliber as far as I know. I think this happened at the same time they removed the .24cal min for deer rifles. Now it's just center fire rifles and handguns.
  9. There certainly aren't any "guaranteed" DRT calibers, but big, fat, slow, flat points do a good job of dropping deer. I don't have an issue with folks using a .300 win mag or a .45/70 or any other big gun for deer. There are advantages to super mags if you like to take very long shots. It's not my thing, but I understand the skill needed to take 300+ yard shots. I don't practice enough to attempt it. As far as tracking, I one shot a deer 3 times with a 30/30 through the heart and lungs and he still ran 100 yards. I thought I had missed the first two shots because he just stood there. The third shot made him bolt. All three were right on the money. Never can tell. Yup.
  10. Got any apartment complex dumpsters near by? JUST KIDDING! Contact your county's TWRA officer and ask if they can help you with legal disposal options. They will have the right answer. They usually aren't too hard to get ahold of either. Yup.
  11. I am using 100 grains of pyrodex pellets and the Hornady SST sabots. Shoots really nice at 75 yards. Yup.
  12. You're supposed to make a duck face when you take a selfie. Congrats on the deer. I've been happy with my TC Impact.
  13. I sat on a rock overlooking the river for a bit this evening, but no deer. I may take a muzzleloader next time. Hehehehe.
  14. Saw a nice buck chasing a doe right before dark yesterday. I was driving home and stopped on the shoulder to watch them running around a pasture. Yup.
  15. Oh man, this picture just reminded me that I bought a bottle of dickel more than a month ago and put it in the garage fridge... Forgot all about it! Set for the weekend now. Yup.
  16. I have an old friend in Florida that lives way out and pretty much survives off wild pigs. I have seen him skin and quarter a big hog in about 10 minutes. The best I have ever done, on a small hog, was about 30 minutes. Those hogs have double stitched skin, there ain't no "grab and pull" on them usually. He says the trick is long cuts when skinning, no dabbing at it. Move the blade 1 to 2 feet instead of 1 to 2 inches.    I stopped field dressing years ago. I only do it if I am going to have to drag a deer. Otherwise, I do it similar to the guy in the video, just a hell of a lot slower. :)
  17. Awesome! Congrats to your daughter... and dad.      Soak it up brother, it won't last forever and it will be gone before you know it. My daughter was the same age when she got her first. She's 15 now and we didn't hunt this weekend. We sorta half planned to hit one afternoon, but didn't make it out. I miss those days of her sitting with me in the blind, on my lap, me shaking worse than her. I am looking forward to the next level of memory making times now. Like teaching her to change a flat tire... :)
  18. Haha, I don't want to cuddle one either. :) Yup.
  19. So long as your 30-30 is a modern gun, I wouldn't get anything else. Check out the 30-30 offerings from Buffalo Bore. If a 190gr JFP in 30cal won't kill it, you need to leave it alone. I love to hunt. I love to shoot. Get all the guns you want, I encourage that. However, nothing will be more dead because of it. Take the 30-30 and HUNT to within 100 yards of your game. Ain't no shame in that. Yup.
  20. Sounds like a good excuse to get a second truck gun. A smaller, scrub pocket friendly version. I have 3 dogs, so I bought a reclining couch for the man cave. Yup.
  21. I shot one 3 times with a .45 and XTP's and it still ran off. I shot another and I know I hit it 5 of the 9 shots in the .22 revolver and never stopped it. I shot a few with .22wmr that ran off too. However, not a single one ran off after being shot with a 300gr .44mag. We had some hunting property near Chiefland, FL and they were everywhere. They would dig holes all over the campsite and you'd dang near break an ankle going to take a leak. We decided to put them on the hit list and spent several years popping every one we saw. Tough little buggers. I had one chase me once, jumped up at me several times. I ran like a girl and jumped in the boat before shooting it. My buddy still busts on me about that day. Yup.
  22. The antithesis of the Survivor buff.
  23. I see them very often on the south side of the Cumberland River, especially along Hwy 149 between Clarksville and Erin. I don't remember seeing any north of the Cumberland. I know they can swim, I've seen them swimming swamps in Florida.
  24. I use my shooting stick in ladder stands. I took a piece of 2x6 and drilled a hole that allows the tip of the shooting stick to rest in the block of wood. I just put this on the foot rest. It lets me have a lot more range of movement to get on the deer. I like to have the shooting stick walking in or out too.
  25. I am at the point I don't want to shoot any deer. All that time spent sitting in the woods, dragging the deer, gutting, processing, cooking. I am too lazy for all that. It is way easier to go to Publix. But, I keep hunting. I don't want to let you guys down. I'm gonna drag my butt out there tomorrow just so you guys are happy. I'll even shoot a big fat old buck if he walks by, just to satisfy you guys. You see what a big heart I have? I don't like to shoot young bucks. I'll shoot any old deer. Good horns or not. I feel the challenge is in hunting the seasoned deer. However, I a not all high and mighty. I'll pop a doe in a heart beat if the situation lends itself to an easy extraction. I ain't gonna shoot a doe a mile from the truck on purpose. Y'all will just have to deal with it. :)
