Turkey Shoots and Gun Raffles Around Nashville
Handsome Rob replied to PA Boy's topic in Hunting and Fishing
Sorry to derail the topic, but I keep seeing signs for a Turkey Shoot between Manchester & Tullahoma. What the living flip IS a turkey shoot????? -
Load testing & evaluation range; .45-70
Handsome Rob replied to Handsome Rob's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Huh. I'm going by the data for the 1895 & 1886 in Lyman's manual, 49th edition. I think this is the main reason I put off getting into reloading for so long. One set of data completely contradicts another. It's really frikkin' confusing & not a little scary, for beginner like me! -
As far as I know (& I've been wrong before, so be warned...) the BATF states that you may store a maximum of 50 pounds of Black Powder in a private residence without a special license. I believe, although you'd have to check, that because reloading powders are legally classed as a propellant, whereas BP is an explosive, there is no federal limit. I have absolutely no idea as to State or Municipal codes though. Please don't take my word for anything though, half the time it takes me several attempts to remember my shoe size. A quick call to the ATF will answer your questions.

Load testing & evaluation range; .45-70
Handsome Rob replied to Handsome Rob's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
IMR 4198 in both. 31.5gn to 35gn in 0.5gn increments under cast .458, 405gn bullets for the High Wall (+ 10 rounds with 54gn of Varget under the same bullet) 37.5gn to 41.5gn in 0.5gn increments under 350gn Hornady JSP bullets for the Marlin. I've used CCI large rifle primers & Winchester brass. All loads have been full-length sized & seated with a roll-crimp. COAL is 2.55" I'm hoping that there's at least ONE accurate load in there for each gun! At least I got some measuring/metering practice in! -
I've just reloaded my first ever rounds. I have 2 .45-70 rifles; a Browning high wall & a Marlin 1895. I've loaded 5 rounds of each powder quantity from minimum to maximum (90 total for each gun), one set of 90 with cast 405gn bullets for the high wall, one with 350gn Hornadys for the Marlin. I'm shooting both these guns open sighted & I want to try & figure out what particular load each prefers, for best accuracy. What range would you recommend to test fire each load? Would 50yd groups tell me enough about each 5-shot group, or should I open up to 100? Neither of these rifles has previously been sighted in properly, so I honestly have no clue where they would print, or even if they'd hit a regular 8x11 printed target.

Threading for choke tubes
Handsome Rob replied to Handsome Rob's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Oh clowncrap. Could a Mod please move this to the gunsmithing section? -
Do any of the supporting Vendors/Smiths do shotgun barrel threading? I have a really well fitting 16ga that unfortunately sports the godawful carbuncle that is a Polychoke. I'd really like to have it removed & get the barrel threaded for screw-ins. I know Briley can do the work, but I'm loathe to spend $400 to make a $300 gun worth $300 (If you see what I mean!)

Legal to cut down a muzzleloader barrel?
Handsome Rob replied to spikehunter's topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
Yep, totally acceptable. The ATF don't have any regs I can find on front-loading, single shot SBRs. -
I'm a little late chiming in on this, but I was waiting for a particular customer to show up. This is one of the Wolf hybrids we bathe & groom regularly..... I believe she's more wolf than dog, but I have no idea as to the cross. We deal with several hybrids & we have one that looks pretty much identical to the photos. I'd say with 90% certainty that what you've got there is a high percentage-Wolf hybrid. Possibly gone feral, possibly owned & loved but allowed (stoopidly) to roam free.

I served with a few guys from the RNZIR. I tell you, I'd put the British infantry up against anyone in a fight, but by God, I'd NEVER want to have to fight the Kiwis. They are THE toughest, hardest & most resilient bunch of bastards I've ever met. Watching them do a haka at close range, even just the 12 or 13 guys we had, is pretty intimidating!

Emergency hog hunt need this weekend!
Handsome Rob replied to Handsome Rob's topic in Hunting and Fishing
Sorted! :D An outfitter buddy of mine in SC has squeezed me onto a hunt this weekend. Hopefully I'll be reporting back on Monday morning with a big grin & a freezer full of potential sausage & bacon! -
Emergency hog hunt need this weekend!
Handsome Rob replied to Handsome Rob's topic in Hunting and Fishing
Sorry for the crappy spelling & grammar. Stoopid phone. -
Sound stupid, but really, really need to find a not-too-expensive hog hunt for this weekend. I was supposed to be going down to Florida for a gator, but the river i have a tag for had been closed down to all traffic, due to flooding. I don't get many free weekends a year & since this one is already booked off, i figured i'd try& get over the depression of a blown hunt, lost tag & all the associated expenses by trying to ventilate something locally. Doves just won't cut it right now! I'm looking to spend around $500 got a private land hog hunt. Doesn't need to be a monster trophy, i just want to fill the freezer & salvage an otherwise depressing turn of events. Hell, it doesn't even need to be in TN! Just within 6 hours drive would work! Can anyone help a fella?

Would the same school also exclude a kid because he was call Remington, KIMBERley or GUNther? What about everyone with the surname Winchester or Benelli? What about all the little Tommys running around? For God's sake.........this is probably THE most ridiculous thing I've read since I hear the EU had banned the sale of 60 watt lightbulbs. Even The Wife, an ardent non-gun person thinks this is frikkin' ludicrous.

School me on Glock reloading please
Handsome Rob replied to tt0511's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I don't have any personal experience, but I have a couple of good friends that shoot thousands of rounds a month through their Glock 19s. They both shoot IDPA type stuff (hope I've got that right!) & reload their own. All I now is that they load very light; just enough to knock over whatever steel they're shooting at. They both load 120gn cast bullets, not jacketed & I believe (although I'll have to double check for you...) 3gn of either Bullseye or Titegroup. I do believe they just keep reusing & reloading the same brass & I would have to guess that most of their cases have been used at least a dozen times now. I've shot a couple of hundred of their reloads through my own 19 & I can't say that I noticed anything out of the ordinary at all. Let me send Mason a quick message & I'll find out their exact load........ -
Anyone stocking .458 bulk bullets?
Handsome Rob replied to Handsome Rob's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Thanks for the offer on the Barnes RW. I'd rather stick to a lighter bullet, I have shoulder problems & can't take too much in the way of recoil. 405s at 1600fps are about my limit for bench shooting out of my guns! From Googling around for a few hours, it looks like Hornady 350 RN/FP bullets are about the best value for jacketed rounds. I'm not sure what exactly Remington are doing, but I've had estimated delivery dates varying from 'This week' to January 2013. -
Well put it this way. you ain't getting it back! It's my 'most fondled' rifle, although I still grab the Henry when I'm out & about on the farm. I stripped it right down & gave everything a good clean & polish. It took a while to get the 50 year old grime out of the wood, but I got there in the end & re-oiled it with boiled Linseed. I installed the Skinner peep & can happily shoot 3½" groups at 100yds all day long from the bench. I gotta say, the amount of recoil compared to a .30-30 came as quite a surprise. After 50 rounds, you really know you've been shooting.

Anyone stocking .458 bulk bullets?
Handsome Rob replied to Handsome Rob's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
As far as I can tell, the FTX bullets get top marks from everyone using them, however as I understand it, I'd need to shorten my brass to load for the .45-70. I'd really prefer to leave my cases full length to give me a little more flexibility in bullet choice. -
I'm really looking for some Remington bulk bullets for my .45-70s I'd prefer the 350gn, but would be happy enough with the 405s. Trouble is, everyone seems to be out of stock. Do any of you reg'lar reloaders know of anyone who has them in stock right now? I'm open to other suggestions/manufacturers.... (I'm absolutely NOT interested in casting, lubing & sizing my own right now)

Says the owner of THE most beautiful rifles ever built......I'll trade you a few shots with it for a few with your 99 in .303 Savage! I really wish I could find a nice 99, I don't even care what caliber (although I'd love a .250-3000)
-
Big fan here too! I only have a moderate collection, common stuff really, but like y'all they just fit me. I have zero interest in black rifles, but I'd happily fill my safe with levers! Top to bottom; Winchester '94AE in .30-30 Marlin 1895 in .45-70 Marlin 336 in .44 mag Henry H001 in .22
-
I just got this delivered today! Unfortunately, due to a jacked up shoulder I haven't had the opportunity to cut loose with it yet. However, I did get time this afternoon to quickly knock up a 'Gun Bra' It's the first one I've done & I really like it! I may have to make a few more for my other leverguns
-
It's the guide model with the 18½" barrel.
-
Okay, so I picked one up on another forum. Next question is: To Scope or not to Scope? Scout scope or standard Scope? I've never, ever had a scope on a lever action before, all my others wear Skinner peeps & I love 'em, but with the .45-70 having the potential to reach out a little further than a .44 mag or .30-30, do you think I'd see any real advantage in putting an optic on it? I already have a longer range deer rifle, but I know the .45-70 would be adequate if I happen to see a deer at loner range. Oh, & thanks for the load data. I'll get a pound of 2400 & give 'er a try.

Well, the deal I had lined up has fallen flat on it's ass. However, y'all have really got my juices flowing! I just put a WANT ad in the classifieds, if any of you are looking at offloading one.......*hintetty-hint-hint*
