Flying to Europe for the first time..
Handsome Rob replied to suspiciousmind's topic in General Chat
Experience lesson: No matter what your cell provider tells you & how much you pay....it won't work in Europe. Jules & I keep hold of a couple of dirt cheap UK phones for the odd times we have to fly back to England. If you smoke, be careful in Europe. In a lot of places it's outright banned, in most others it's frowned upon. A lot of cities have no smoking in public laws & they DO enforce them. If you dip, make sure you have a spitter bottle. Spitting is hugely rude in Europe. Get a bus timetable for every city you'll visit. European taxis are crippling expensive ($8-$10 per mile is not uncommon) and are very good at 'detours.' Public transport is cheap, quick, very regular & clean. Everything is expensive compared to the US. VERY expensive. Last time I was in England a pack of Marlboro was $15! Tipping in restaurants is not expected our required. Wait staff actually get a decent wage & are not tip-reliant. Don't forget the time difference. Not actually the clock change, so much as the daytime cycle. Here, most folk start work earlier & stores are open earlier & later. The European norm is that most places don't start until 8-9 & many close between 5-6. Eating out is a much later affair though. Going out for an evening meal at 9pm is usual & many people don't think of going out for a drink until 10pm -
Just got done annealing 200 pieces of 6.5x55 brass. By hand. With a blowtorch. Is there anything more tedious? Thank the gods I don't have to do this again for a few more loadings!

How pissed would you be if Wal-Mart banned private gun sales & transfers in their parking lot? Same deal. ;)

30/30 I took a WAG on the Crockett though!

Here's how I measured my 'jam' length (no gadgets required) Remove your bolt. Take a bare bullet (no case, bullet only) & gently push it into the breech with a pen/pencil/stick until it won't go any further. Just slight pressure, don't hammer it in! Insert your cleaning rod down the muzzle (it helps if you can block the thread hole here. I use the threaded portion of a cleaning jag, with the jag cut off) until it contacts the bullet tip. You may end up pushing the bullet out of the rifling, so be prepared to hold it in place. Mark your rod at the muzzle. Knock the bullet out & replace the bolt. Close the bolt & dry fire so your firing pin is out of the way, then reinsert your cleaning rod from the muzzle. When the rod contacts the bolt face, Mark it again at the muzzle. If you measure between these marks, it'll give you your jam length (max COAL) with that particular bullet. I'll admit, it's not perfect due to meplat differences bullet to bullet, but I've found it to be 'within a thou' consistent. Once you have this, you can figure your jump to lands & experiment up & down.

I'd offer the government $900,000,000 for a citizenship for Jules & I, then retire. 30 mill would keep me pretty warm for the rest of my life!

Apparently he was in violation of YouTube & Google's terms of use agreement by 'advertising' firearms for sale. That's the best I've found out so far anyway.

Summit Goliath if I don't have to carry it too far. Lone Wolf hand climber if I'm going in a mile or four. The Summit I modified with a Hazmore Silent Seat (sheds a pound & much quieter) & I can sit in that big bastard all day long! I've probably spent as much time in it asleep as I have awake. The Lone Wolf packs up to about the thickness & weight of a postage stamp, but it's a 4 hour stand, maximum (& preferably less) I LOVE carrying the lone wolf, I LOVE sitting in the summit.

Hmmm. Honestly, for a non-interchangeable barrel, break action, single shot, I'd look really hard at Rossi over CVA. On most of the Facebook gun pages, Gunbroker & Armslist, you could easily save a hundy. Personally, at that price point, I'd be looking at the Savage Axis. Far better quality, outstanding accuracy, superb reliability & customer service & with savage's rebate program.....$250

I just save the confusion by buying the Annul Sportsman's licence. Covers me for all of deer season, fishing, trout, turkeys & doves. The only thing missing is a federal duck stamp & I don't hunt those anyway. -
I can't believe Obi Wan gets killed!!

This morning is way too pretty to not be seeing any deer :( I think I'm probably the only person hunting in Moore co. that hasn't shot yet! -
Welp... I don't know where this thread has meandered off to, but I keep my shorty .44 lever gun behind the seat of my truck for the occasional coyote, fox or coyote I come across. While I'm away in Florida, Georgia, Alabama or Texas it serves as an impromptu "Oooh....a hog!" gun. I'd never really considered it as a self/truck defense weapon. The .45 between the seats, the .44 under the seat & the .22 mag in the ashtray have me covered for that. If it goes beyond that, they can have the damn truck!

Even so, over that time span I'd be amazed if the meat had actually started to turn. They maybe smelled gut & assumed it'd started to go off. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk -

I had it explained by a butcher friend of mine & it may or may not be true, but it sounded plausible at the time & I've always stuck by it. His theory is that as you're field dressing, hair & other large solid fall into the cavity. You're also separating the anus & can't always get 100% of everything out right away. The thing is, these contaminants tend to stick to the outer surface of the drying cavity & not move much. They're also contaminating a tiny area that is developing a dry film, essentially protecting the underlying meat. By spraying or washing the cavity, you're prolonging this drying process & swilling the contaminants over a larger area creating a larger likelihood of further bacterial contamination. Sounds plausible to me, but I wouldn't be surprised to find it's utter bunkum either! I do know a lot of guys that wipe the interior of dressed deer with a clean cloth soaked in a vinegar solution & swear by this method too. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk -

I always gut mine in the field, however I never wash the cavity (water = bacteria = spoilage) I've hung them at 40° for 7 days before & that was the tenderest, tastiest meat I've ever eaten. Even in early bow season, with temperatures in the 70s, I hang them overnight. I hang all my deer in a relatively stable basement, but the temperature is pretty much controlled by the outside ambient temperature. -

Might I suggest a different processor in future? There is no way in hell a deer is going 'bad' overnight at 45° If it was inedible, you really would've known when you gutted him. I've intentionally hung deer for 24+ hrs in temperatures up to 50° & higher. -
Kindness & generosity repays kindness & generosity. Not to blow my own trumpet, but a couple of years ago I offered to process a friend's deer, as thanks for letting me hunt his property. I processed a lot more than I hunted, because to me, the opportunity was worth it. His thinking was the exact opposite. The permission cost him nothing but the processing saved him a fortune. Christmas last year, he presented me with a stainless butcher's table & a brand new chest freezer as thanks. As far as I'm concerned he has free deer processing for life. You get back what you give in this life.
