  1. Unfortunately, probably half that. I know that I'm not going to get anything special or glitzy, but I don't want to have a bunch of money tied up in something that is undoubtedly going to get knocked around & scratched up and probably (hopefully) never even used. I can't imagine I'm ever getting into collecting pistols like some do, because I suspect I'll never be able to carry one, so how it looks, who it's made by or wheter it's technologically up to date doesn't matter to me in the least. As long as it'll do what it needs to do, when I need it, I'llbe happy!
  2. Thanks folks, a good bit of info to chew over in there! I had thought about the Taurus Judge as being about the perfect handgun for my needs, but they're just a little beyond my means right now. I wish someone would make a 'cheap' copy of that! The CZ82 & Makarovs look like they may be close contenders. What's the availability of 9x18 ammunition like? How're they for reliability? (bearing in mind the gun could be bouncing around in a truck or pack for a week or more at a time) I kinda like the simplicity of a revolver over an auto, to be honest. As a complete novice to this it would appear that a revolver would be simpler to operate & clean, with lots fewer reasons to go wrong. I know there's a thread discussing this very fact at the moment for carry guns, but what about for the 'occasional' user such as myself? Are revolvers inherrently more expensive than autos? Looking through Gunbroker, it would appear to be the case, but is there anyone that makes a 'budget' revolver? (In the same way that Hi-Point makes budget Autos. Heavy, clunky, cheap, but basically good & functional firearms)
  3. I'm seriously considering buying my first handgun. I know why I want one & I know what I'll be keeping it for. I travel to South Texas a lot & spend a lot of time in the wild hog hunting with my longbow & I run into a lot of big snakes (along with a fair few 'aliens') I have no intention of carrying a pistol in public, (Actually, being a non-resident alien myself, I couldn't if I wanted to) it's purely to throw into my hunting pack & carry in the truck whilst off the roads. It would also be handy for home-defence (although I have a shotgun for that) So, in essence, I'm wanting something I can use to safely dispatch snakes, protect myself from border jumpers & keep in the night stand, just in case. I'm also on a pretty limited budget so I'm looking at used ($200 MAX), rather than new, guns. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to makes & models, calibers & styles (revolver/auto) I should keep an eye open for? Thanks in advance!
  4. Hopefully by the middle of next year. I haven't had the chance (or the cash, if I'm honest) to fully equip a workshop since I got to the US. I doubt I'll be as prolific in my building as I was in the UK, back there I was doing it fulltime, 6 days a week. Here I have a business to run, so I doubt if it'll ever be more than a hobby. Shame really as the business was just starting to really take off when we moved

  6. I'll stick with birdshot thanks. Anyone that can stand up to a load of number 7 at 5-20 feet away is welcome to at least one more & if that don't stop 'em they're welcome to theTV! Speaking as someone who's personally sustained two very minor, accidental (1 pure fluke accident, 1 stupid childhood incident) gunshot wounds believe me when I tell you even a light load of small shot is going to take the fight out of probably 99.999% of the population. I'd rather not take the one in one thousand chance of ventilating the wife.
  7. Been visiting this site, on & off for about 4 years & it still makes me laugh like hell! Skippy’s List Skippy’s List: The 213 things Skippy is no longer allowed to do in the U.S. Army
  8. I seem to have searched high & low, hither & yon but I cannot find actual black powder anywhere! I don't mind mail-ordering GOEX from Powders inc. but I begrudge the $45 HAZMAT fee. I can't imagine using 20 or 30 pounds in the next couple of years that would warrant the fee & I don't know anyone I could split a case with. Can anyone help?!
  9. Custom 42" Pennsylvania/Kentucky long rifle unique : Black Powder / Muzzle loading at GunBroker.com Seriously, how awesome is that? Gunsmith FAIL!
  10. Thanks Sorry can't do pictures, it's already at the processors. I can show you a spent .357 mag casing & the blood-pool in the back of the truck.....
  11. I went to hunt my little 25 acre plot this morning. Got there a litte late & the sun was just starting to show. Anyway, as I'm driving up towards the wood a nice little spike comes walking out & presents me a perfect broadside shot at 120yds. I figured that between getting there late, the wind being directly from me to him & the rest of the herd being out in the middle of the neighboring field it'd be the only chance I'd get. I climbed out of the truck, rested my little Rossi .357 against the front door pillar, took aim & shot him. He didn't take a step. Fell over on the spot. Took the top clean off his heart & blew out both lungs. I drove over to him, tagged & loaded him in the truck & drove home. Total time elapsed from leaving home to getting back with the deer, 25 minutes. Now I feel like a total heel for having not 'hunted' for this deer, just shooting it. Anyone else ever had this happen?
  12. W & W Deer Processing & Taxidermy 485 Knight's Church Road Decherd (931) 962-2238 Owned & operated by Tony & Beth Wells. Tony charges $55 for processing, including whatever cuts/burger/sausage you prefer. He als does a 'jerky' cut for $60. Taxidermy rates are reasonble & his mounts are award winning. All meat comes labelled & vacuum sealed. Turnaround time is 4 or 5 days. I just had a couple of steaks he cut me last night
  13. Went down twards Tracy City yesterday. Sat in a clear-cut from 12 'til dark & didn't see a thing. Heard someone else having a pop, maybe a mile off & heard a buck chasing on the other side of a bluff, but he went the wrong way to give me a shot. Hardly even seen a deer so far this year ???
  14. Shot my first ever deer last night with my muzzleloader! Sorry no pics, but she was a nice fat doe that dressed out at 136#
  15. SHIVA'S SHEEP!!! It's a monster! Any further details (Where, how etc...)
  16. I know it's a hardship, but if you're wanting a good stand, invest in a Summit Titan. It's a little spendy (although there are more 'spensive stands out there) but as a treestand neophite myself, I spent 6 months this year researching & trying out different options. The summit is by far the easiest to use, most comfortable, quiet climber out of every one I tried. If you're going to spend any time up a tree, a Summit would be money well spent.
  17. Lots of diesel. Drive to Texas and have a fat old time of it hunting hogs & Javies! :D
  18. Cleanup needed, aisle three!
  19. Very nice collection Joker! My 5 would be, in no particular order of preference..... Taurus Judge in 45LC/.410 Remmy 870 Henry Big boy .44 Winchester Wildcat .22 After that, I'm on a 50/50 tie between the good old L1A1 SLR (In case I really need to reach out & touch somebody ) & a good .458 Express double (In case I find myself in 19th centurey East Africa)
  20. Tims Ford wildlife refuge has thousands! No hunting allowed, so they're really quite tame
  21. Oooooh. I get it. Just read the rest of the site. What a tosser.
  22. ????? I don't get it? He's holding a severed deer head. What's wrong with that?
  23. Thanks guys, lots of good info there.
  24. I have a .357 Rossi carbine that I'm wanting to deer hunt with, but I'm unsure what I should use ammunition-wise? Due to it being a handgun caliber, it seems that just about everything available is hollow point & I don't know if that will be OK out to 75yds (Don't even know if this maybe stretching things a bit) I've been advised that the Hornady Leverevolution would be ideal, but they seem to be pretty much unobtainable! I know I'd be better off with a .243 or .270, but I'm on a tight budget & I don't know if rifle hunting is something I'll do more than once. I've bow hunted for 12 years, but gun-hunting larger game is totally new to me. Can anyone offer any advice to a complete novice?
  25. The Winchester Wildcat's a fantastic little rifle, straight from the box. Very accurate & a great triger (although non-adjustable, mine was set perfectly out of the box.)
