I bought an older revolver to use as a throw around truck/hunting pack gun. Please bear in mind that I have ZERO handgun experience & yes, I realise I probably should've asked this before I handed over the small amount of cash I spent. Should there be a gap between the front of the cylinder & the back of the barrel? The gun I bought has a gap of about 1/16" & I'm a little worried about shooting it (I guess I'm a little leery of escaping gasses, misalignment, blowing my own frikkin' hands off, etc...) Should I be, or is this perfectly normal & I'm an idiot?

Here's a small example for you......If I were walking down the street unarmed in any way, shape or form, made a gun shape with my fingers & pointed at an old lady, I would be guilty of Armed Threat. How f**king ridiculous is that?!?! You don't even need to be armed, all that needs to happen is for someone to be AFRAID THAT YOU MAY BE ARMED!!! Replica handguns, blank firing handguns & certain toy handuns are classed in exactly the same light as the real thing! All our toy guns these days have to be orange!!!!! All I can say is God Bless America (and thanks fo letting me in ) but not everyone in England is as bad as y'all make out. Just them that make the rules

Tinitus. Brought on by my own stupidity on Wednesday. Shooting a .44 mag & some HOT loads without ear defenders. I gave them to a 13 year old to protect his hearing I wouldn't mind, but i was HIS gun!!! Mind you, they were his EDs too. Damn good fun was had (Better if the ringing ever stops!)

Looking at things with a little more knowledge now, it seems like I should be able to get myself set up for less than $250, but probably not for $200, with a good quality .38 revolver, which was my initial thought also. I guess it's time to start shopping! I suppose a want-ad on here couldn't do any harm either

I've checked out the legalities of what I'm wanting & because I'm on private land, it's not a problem. As soon as I hit any public trails, roads or land I'd have to unload & carry the gun seperately from the ammunition, in an inaccessible locked case. It's just when I'm 10 or 15 miles from anyone on a multi-hundred thousand acre ranch I feel like a little insurance would go a long way! The main reason I'm a little wary of a .22 (I know that it'll stop a rattler!) is from an experience I had down there a few years back. I'd parked my truck on a small sendero, leading down to a nicely wooded draw that just reeked of hogs. I probably walked a good 6 miles from the truck & hunted there all day. I shot a nice 100# hog & dragged it back to the truck to find 3 Mexican guys sat on my tailgate. Now I'm a big guy & not easily intimidated, but the way these guys acted (trying to get on all sides of me, one being very aggressive, 2 being silent & shifty) scared the piss out of me! I ended up giving them the pig to get them to go away. I've also had a friend in a similar situation coming back to their vehicles to find a full family hiding under a tarp in the truck bed! This all happened before I moved to the States & there would've been nothing I could've done if these guys forced me into a nasty situation (well, nastier) I just want the insurance that I can get myself out of a similar predicament if it should ever happen again. Oh, just as an aside, I do plan on attending a handgun safety class as soon as possible!

Unfortunately, probably half that. I know that I'm not going to get anything special or glitzy, but I don't want to have a bunch of money tied up in something that is undoubtedly going to get knocked around & scratched up and probably (hopefully) never even used. I can't imagine I'm ever getting into collecting pistols like some do, because I suspect I'll never be able to carry one, so how it looks, who it's made by or wheter it's technologically up to date doesn't matter to me in the least. As long as it'll do what it needs to do, when I need it, I'llbe happy!

Thanks folks, a good bit of info to chew over in there! I had thought about the Taurus Judge as being about the perfect handgun for my needs, but they're just a little beyond my means right now. I wish someone would make a 'cheap' copy of that! The CZ82 & Makarovs look like they may be close contenders. What's the availability of 9x18 ammunition like? How're they for reliability? (bearing in mind the gun could be bouncing around in a truck or pack for a week or more at a time) I kinda like the simplicity of a revolver over an auto, to be honest. As a complete novice to this it would appear that a revolver would be simpler to operate & clean, with lots fewer reasons to go wrong. I know there's a thread discussing this very fact at the moment for carry guns, but what about for the 'occasional' user such as myself? Are revolvers inherrently more expensive than autos? Looking through Gunbroker, it would appear to be the case, but is there anyone that makes a 'budget' revolver? (In the same way that Hi-Point makes budget Autos. Heavy, clunky, cheap, but basically good & functional firearms)

I'm seriously considering buying my first handgun. I know why I want one & I know what I'll be keeping it for. I travel to South Texas a lot & spend a lot of time in the wild hog hunting with my longbow & I run into a lot of big snakes (along with a fair few 'aliens') I have no intention of carrying a pistol in public, (Actually, being a non-resident alien myself, I couldn't if I wanted to) it's purely to throw into my hunting pack & carry in the truck whilst off the roads. It would also be handy for home-defence (although I have a shotgun for that) So, in essence, I'm wanting something I can use to safely dispatch snakes, protect myself from border jumpers & keep in the night stand, just in case. I'm also on a pretty limited budget so I'm looking at used ($200 MAX), rather than new, guns. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to makes & models, calibers & styles (revolver/auto) I should keep an eye open for? Thanks in advance!

Hopefully by the middle of next year. I haven't had the chance (or the cash, if I'm honest) to fully equip a workshop since I got to the US. I doubt I'll be as prolific in my building as I was in the UK, back there I was doing it fulltime, 6 days a week. Here I have a business to run, so I doubt if it'll ever be more than a hobby. Shame really as the business was just starting to really take off when we moved

Speaking as someone who's personally sustained two very minor, accidental (1 pure fluke accident, 1 stupid childhood incident) gunshot wounds believe me when I tell you even a light load of small shot is going to take the fight out of probably 99.999% of the population. I'd rather not take the one in one thousand chance of ventilating the wife.

I seem to have searched high & low, hither & yon but I cannot find actual black powder anywhere! I don't mind mail-ordering GOEX from Powders inc. but I begrudge the $45 HAZMAT fee. I can't imagine using 20 or 30 pounds in the next couple of years that would warrant the fee & I don't know anyone I could split a case with. Can anyone help?!

I went to hunt my little 25 acre plot this morning. Got there a litte late & the sun was just starting to show. Anyway, as I'm driving up towards the wood a nice little spike comes walking out & presents me a perfect broadside shot at 120yds. I figured that between getting there late, the wind being directly from me to him & the rest of the herd being out in the middle of the neighboring field it'd be the only chance I'd get. I climbed out of the truck, rested my little Rossi .357 against the front door pillar, took aim & shot him. He didn't take a step. Fell over on the spot. Took the top clean off his heart & blew out both lungs. I drove over to him, tagged & loaded him in the truck & drove home. Total time elapsed from leaving home to getting back with the deer, 25 minutes. Now I feel like a total heel for having not 'hunted' for this deer, just shooting it. Anyone else ever had this happen?

Went down twards Tracy City yesterday. Sat in a clear-cut from 12 'til dark & didn't see a thing. Heard someone else having a pop, maybe a mile off & heard a buck chasing on the other side of a bluff, but he went the wrong way to give me a shot. Hardly even seen a deer so far this year ???

Shot my first ever deer last night with my muzzleloader! Sorry no pics, but she was a nice fat doe that dressed out at 136#
