  1. Thanks for asking! I absolutely agree with your points about the 6.8 SPC. What draws me to it is its versatility and efficiency, especially in the AR-15 platform. For deer hunting, I think it's a fantastic choice because it offers enough stopping power without the heavier recoil you'd find in larger calibers. That balance makes it accessible and effective for a wide range of hunters. As a reloader, I appreciate how the 6.8 SPC fits seamlessly into a lineup with other .277 cartridges. Like you mentioned, being able to work with different bullet weights and tailor the loads for specific scenarios is a huge advantage. It's practical and cost-effective, especially if you're already set up for .277 bullets. I do wish it had gained more mainstream attention, but I think its niche appeal gives it a special place in the community. It's like the hidden gem that those in the know truly value!
  2. When I chose to go with 6.8 for my AR15 conversion, I picked it because of it's ballistics over 6.5 and the articles I read. However, a lot of that info was unfortunately out of date and I didn't realize just how difficult it would be to find ammo for it. I don't reload, and I never really intended to reload either. My local stores offer only 2 different non-FMJ factory loads: Hornady 100gr CX and 120gr SST Online I can find the same plus: Winchester 115gr XP and Remington 115gr HPBT I spent several hours reading some of the big performance threads on here about the 100 CX and saw some pros and cons for that as well as the SST. I'd like to ask which round would be best assuming I need a factory load for my specific situation. (The threads on the other 2 rounds were less than pleased) My rifle is a PSA 18" barrel with a 1:11 twist. I built this rifle exclusively for whitetail and hog hunts. When I talked with some local hunters I know plus my own personal, but also novice experience, the majority of shots taken were between 50-150 yards with the 75-100 yard range making up the vast majority of them. When I read about the 100CX, the positive points are that it's a copper bullet that doesn't shed much weight and is pretty accurate. The negative side talks about how it has no expansion past 150 yards. When people talk about the 120SST, it has a lot of reviews and positive things said about its fragmentation and plenty of pictures of kills with it. However, I've also heard that used in a negative way, with people talking about how it's like shooting a grenade and the bullet basically explodes, risking damaged meat. My question is a two parter: 1. Assuming my current barrel, plus that it will only be used on whitetail and maybe hogs, and that I do not intend to take shots past 150 yards (100 yard average), could I be happy with the 100CX? I've seen the thread on clipping the tip to boost is expansion. I would rather try to use it factory setup. 2. Assuming I need to use the 120SST, is the consensus on the fragmentation a positive or negative? I like to think I'm not the type of person to cause waste by destroying excess meat without a perfect shot placement. Probably one of my biggest concerns when I got into hunting was a bullet exploding and risking lead ending up in something I plan to eat. That's why I liked the idea of the CX and its copper bullet that might fragment less. Maybe I'm overthinking this, I've shot rifles most of my life, but it was my first actual hunting season this year. I'd just like some feedback.
  3. "Seeking Clarification on Factory Loads for 6.8 SPC Ammo" Hey everyone! I’ve been diving into the world of 6.8 SPC and wanted to get some insights from the community regarding factory loads. While I understand that factory ammunition offers convenience and consistency, I’m curious about a few things: What are the most reliable factory loads for hunting versus target shooting? Are there any noticeable differences in performance between brands or bullet weights? Have you experienced any issues with factory loads in specific rifles or setups? How do factory loads compare to custom reloads in terms of accuracy and cost-effectiveness? I’d love to hear your thoughts, experiences, and recommendations. Let’s get a discussion going to help both newcomers and seasoned shooters make informed choices!
  4. Mastering the 6.8 SPC: Reloading Tips, Ammo Insights, and Performance Hacks! This could lead to a lively discussion about reloading techniques, the best ammunition options, and how to optimize the 6.8 SPC for various uses like hunting or target shooting. Here are a few tips for getting the most out of 6.8 SPC ammunition and reloading: 1. Choosing Quality Components Invest in high-quality brass, primers, and bullets tailored for the 6.8 SPC cartridge. Match the bullet weight and type to your intended use—lighter bullets for speed and precision, heavier ones for hunting and stopping power. 2. Fine-Tuning Your Loads Experiment with different powder types and amounts to find the optimal combination for accuracy and velocity. Pay attention to seating depth when loading your rounds. This can impact performance and ensure reliable chambering. 3. Testing & Refining Always test your reloads in controlled conditions to evaluate their accuracy and reliability. Keep detailed records of your reloads, including powder weights, bullet types, and performance results. This helps refine your process over time. 4. Safety First Always check for signs of overpressure, such as flattened primers or unusual case bulges. Follow reloading manuals carefully to ensure safe practices. 5. Maintaining Your Equipment Regularly clean and inspect your reloading tools to ensure consistency and safety. Use a reliable chronograph to measure the velocity of your rounds and optimize their performance.
