Selecting a muzzle loader bullet/powder charge combination
GKar replied to kckndrgn's topic in Hunting and Fishing
Been pretty pleased with 250 gr Barnes Expander MZ over 100 grains BlackHorn 209 in my CVA Acura. Nice groupings out to 200yds, unbelievably easy cleanup. Never shot PBs (had too many friends talk about lack of expansion with them), but also had good results with Hornady SSTs and Barnes Split-Fires over that load, too. -
Another show-stopper in TN with regards to the proposed language above - in TN, there is no differentiation between concealed carry and open carry, in that the permit is simply for "handgun carry". Don't believe under the current construction of TN law, you could carve out that distinction: that then would mean such a proposal would apply to both open and concealed carry...and you can bet your bottom dollar THAT won't be palatable to the Chamber, nor to Haslam, Harwell, Ramsey, McCormick et al.

Willis - in for two, both regular blade, serial #s 26 and 32 if available (those were the serials I got from the first order).

Hmmm...cocobolo might be nice.

Runco, I agree with you totally: but Big Business and the Chamber want none of it. THAT is the reason it wont happen - "property rights" are a convenient distraction from the actual dynamics. Even just witnessed a [former] state legislator most eloquently make the exact argument many have made that what is inside your car is YOUR private property unless/until it appears outside of that car...yet, he was complacent in the killing of the very legislation that sought to codify that approach.

Unless there is a significant upheaval in the ruling junta's leadership roster (very unlikely), we're basically pissing up a rope hoping for any substantive change in the status quo. Last year's sesson made that abundantly clear, and the key player's haven't changed.

Harwell for Gov? Kiss your 2A desires goodbye...
GKar replied to GKar's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I'd like to think Green would be a good pick, but I wasn't terribly pleased that he ran the Rs three parking lot bills last session. -
http://knoxblogs.com/humphreyhill/2014/10/27/harwell-governor-campaign-coming-soon/ If you like what Haslam has done with regards to 2A efforts in this state, you'll just loooooove what 'Haslam-lite' will do for you....

I went by Sunday morning and spent a couple of hours there. Standing there looking at the B-17, a guy beside me offered that he was fulfilling a promise to his recently-deceased uncle to come and see one whenever he had the chance. Turns out his uncle was a B-17 pilot for 30+ missions, and had survived being shot down 3 times over Europe. After crawling around inside for a bit, I came to realize that I simply couldn't comprehend managing all the necessary tasks in those tight spaces while was hitting the fan... Did get to see the take-off for one of the tour flights (already full, darn it)...music of the heavens.

Have to give kudos to my home range, Kettlefoot, for throwing the highest number of registered trap targets in Virgina (both total number and targets/field), as well as the highest total number of targets in TN (2nd in targets/field) in the 2013 trap year: 127,350 birds on 4 fields (avg of 31,838/field). And sources say we're "on target" to meet or exceed those numbers in the 2014 year, which closes later this week. Wayne Wills, Keith Vance, Richard Colley and a host of others do a fine job of hosting ATA shoots and Big 50 shoots year-round. Come to this lil corner of TN and get you some!

I disagree here. IMO, this shill argument falls apart when you are talking about storing an otherwise legally-owned firearm in your vehicle. I can understand (not agree with, just understand) the argument with regards to CARRY IN THE WORKPLACE, but to extend that fear to a situation where the employee would first have to leave his work station, go to his vehicle, then return is stretching it too far. Sounds like an creation straight outta MTAS... But, following that argument for a second just for s***s and giggles: if you, Mr Employer, cannot trust that employee YOU hired any further than that, then why on earth should I trust him to execute a transaction with your store...hmmm?
-
The change in state law in TN only provides protection against criminal prosecution for such employee. Does not affect employers ability to terminate. RE carry by store employees - he was told that carry by a store employee was not allowed (open nor concealed). Again, was purported to be corporate policy by store management. As far as search permissions: I don't know. Good question. I do know that each employee was told they could/will be searched before leaving the building after their shift.

With the opening of a new BPS here in Bristol, one of my son's friends applied for and was offered a position. The last day of training, they were reviewing store policies, and the new employees were advised that they cannot store an otherwise legally-owned firearm in their vehicle while parked at the BPS - to do so will be grounds for immediate dismissal. He questioned his understanding of the policy, and was told that he did understand it correctly - and that this was BPS's corporate policy. He politely handed his "uniforms" back to the manager and told them that he would not be taking the position. Hopefully, the Cabela's that is building a store just 6 miles up the road will have a bit more common sense.

I, too, applaud the mods here for running a good shop. I can also sympathize with the task - I had mod responsibilities for a smaller forum group a few years ago, and I still have nightmares about it. It's not an easy task to be a GOOD mod: kinda like trying to be a GOOD referee/umpire in sports. Sock puppets - perhaps a mods greatest irritant. We had one forum member who went through 5 personas before he finally tired of the game...

Amendment to nullify gun legislation in Missouri!
GKar replied to enfield's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Sen Brian Kelsey (Ramsey's handpicked replacement for Mae Beavers as chair of the Sen Judiciary Cmte) effectively killed the TN Senate version in the last session. Sen Beavers has indicated that she will bring teh legislation back next year. -
QA is the final word only if senior management gets out of the way. Been there, done that, got the T shirt.

Better slow down a minute, folks. House bill 1399 (and Senate bill 1612, its sister) does NOT pre-empt local regulation of carry-in-parks: at least, that is exactly what the bill's sponsor, Judd Matheny, told the House Civil Justice committee in presenting the bill on March 26, 2014. Watch below, right at 35 minutes into the meeting. http://tnga.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=269&clip_id=9180&meta_id=172546 And if memory serves, he said the same thing about the bill the week prior in the CJ sub - in response to a direct question about that issue from Mike Stewart. So, looks like Knoxville City Council has nothing to address...the rationale apparently is that the legislature had ALREADY ceded parks carry regulation to local authorities, and this bill does not undo that act. Any questions should be sent to Rep Matheny and Sen Green...good luck in getting a cogent, direct response.

The coroner apparently said there was no evidence of heavy alcohol or drug use at the scene. Another officer confirmed that it was a handgun used in the shooting. Authorities said she was charged with involuntary manslaughter because she "showed reckless disregard for the safety of others by pulling the trigger". He's 26, she's 18...not the smartest way to show off your manliness...

I'll jump in as the third person well-satisfied with a Weber Smoky Mountain cooker. After going thru a couple of Brinkmann El Cheapos, I finally bit the bullet last year and bought a 22.5" WSM...and haven't looked back. For smaller cooks, I made a 17" charcoal ring out of perf metal - about 12 lb (2 starters worth) will fill it nicely. Found a local tree service that just loves to get rid of limbs from trees they harvest all over, so have a nice stash of peach, pecan, apple, hickory and white oak. Throw a few chunks into the unlit charcoal, and drop about half a chimney of lit on top (Minion method), and just let R2D2 do his thing for the next several hours. Temp control is supreme in most all weather conditions (use an old wool Army surplus blanket if its <30 degrees or real windy) - adding a DigiQ D2 temp controller was the finishing touch. I've done 4x8lb pork butts for 18-19 hours @ 225 without adding charcoal, or cranked it up to 325 or so to do a 19 lb turkey and 2x10 lb turkey breasts. I hit Lowe's, Wally World or Home Depot for their Memorial Day/Labor Day charcoal sales - usually can get 2x20lb value packs of Kingsford Blue for $10. I went thru just over 500 lbs from Memorial day thru Christmas last year... Recently added a Weber One Touch Gold grill for the shorter cooks (steak, fish, some chicken dishes, beans, other sides)...with a bit of playing around, you can use one of those as a smaller volume smoker, too.

URGENT - Permit-less Car Carry in the Senate Tomorrow
GKar replied to wk05's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
During House deliberations after the amendment was placed, the sponsor was asked that directly and replied that this bill would NOT remove local authority to ban carry in parks. I forgot which committee was meeting when that statement was made, but it was made loud and clear: pretty sure it was Stewart who asked the question, but I am old and not real sure what I just had for breakfast... -
I've lived in Bristol for all of my 50+years. I've hiked and hunted the hills and mountains around S Holston Lake quite a bit in that time, and consider this area to be quite safe - have only had 3 instances I would characterize as "uncomfortable": - a buddy and I ran upon a recently-operated moonshine still while squirrel hunting on Holston Mountain (about 40 yrs ago) - I was approached by two "wild" dogs while hiking on the mountain last year. - about three years ago, I was caught in traffic on an interstate off-ramp about 30 miles up the road one morning (near Chilhowie, VA), and a ragged fellar was waving a "Will work for food" sign around like a wild man, trying to get me to look at him and engage in conversation. A motion to my extreme right caught my eye, and I turned and saw another "straggler" with his hand extended just about to grab the RR door handle. Mr Springfield and I persuaded him that to do so might not be in his best interest, and that he should instead visit the nearest dry cleaner.
