Seriously, y'all? I saw the first response to Brooks' post yesterday, and knew that we were going to wind up here. I thought it might take a little longer than it did. But, nonetheless I'm closing this thread to keep a bunch of you from saying things that, even if you do actually believe them, you really ought to keep them to yourself and spend some time really thinking about the outcomes of your "logic". There is certainly some truth to the fact that a lot of the conversation surrounding Islam today is being hijacked by a very small percentage of "believers". It's not that most Muslims are good or bad, it's that most are just like you - they don't really care that much, because they don't see how it affects them right now. Thus, the radicals are getting all the spotlight, and that gets the press. Don't delude yourself into thinking however, that all Muslims are somehow evil. The Westboro Baptist Church professes to be "Christian" and speak the "truth". Do they speak for you? They don't speak for me. I don't want to be painted with that brush, and expect you don't either. As to separation of church and state, it goes both ways. We all say that it's a good thing to keep "religion" out of government. But the reverse is also true. It's to keep the government out of your "religion". There's a difference between these two points, and it's worth spending some time thinking about. I'm a Christian, but I'm all for banning public prayer in schools. Not because I'm against prayer in school, but because I don't want the government dictating what/how my kids pray. When you start demanding that everyone do like you, and conform to your standards, you're sowing the seeds of your own demise. Because someday, you're going to be the one who's different. And where will you be then?

Unfortunately Dave, because of my chosen profession I know the speed, violence and willingness to use violence of the criminals out there today. I'll generally stand by my above statement. My "getting the jump on you" was meant to express being surprised by a situation. You shouldn't have your head in the sand when you're carrying a weapon and suddenly find yourself in a situation where you have no idea where you got there. Avoidance is the best deterrent to becoming the victim of a crime. Gangbangers these days are amazingly efficient. And, overwhelmingly violent. Obviously you can't avoid every random crime, but this is the exception as opposed to the norm. A lot more lives are saved by people paying attention and getting out of the way of trouble before it happens than lives are lost due to violent events like this. It does serve as good warning for everyone, though. I expect everyone should think about why they carry and what they would do in a situation like this.

People do stupid things sometimes. But you can control being overtaken from behind. Keep your back up against the car when filling up at night. Or better yet, get gas in the daytime. Really, as a gun owner, you owe it to yourself and society at large to be hyper-aware when you're carrying. There is no excuse for someone getting the jump on you when you're carrying a weapon. You have a higher responsibility when you strap on a weapon. We carry to change the outcome in situations like these, but should behave in a manner to avoid them at all cost. Know that if you EVER surrender your gun, you're very likely to be shot with it. You're simply handing this street thug the ability to be the arbiter of your life. Those odds almost never work out in the victim's favor.

Yeah, refer back to my original comment on this needing to be criminal. How about this for term limit reform? You can serve for more than two terms if your constituents will elect you. But, if you serve more than two terms, when you leave, you report to the nearest Federal penitentary to begin serving your mandatory sentence for corruption...

It's ridiculous! I wonder how much money is wasted on this? I know the answer to this question, but how hard is it to hire competent people and expect them to get it right the first time? I have no doubt that there are a lot of claims that need to be denied. But, to make it standard policy to deny everyone just to weed out the fakers is morally wrong. I know you won't always get it exactly right, but having to go through the appeals process should be the exception, not the norm. If this was a private company as opposed to a government entity, there would be Congressional hearings into how they were screwing people, and people would likely go to jail. Do the job you we hired you to do, and get it right the first time. How tough is that? [/sOAPBOX]

No. I can "take up the slack" on my J-frame, my LCP and a couple of other weapons that have really heavy pulls when I'm plinking cans out in the back forty. In a defensive situation however, the only thing I would advocate or practice is a slow, steady intentional pull straight to the rear. Even if you had the manual dexterity in a defensive situation to hold it right on the edge of the sear, which I would challenge anyone on, you're asking for trouble.

Which if I recall correctly was exactly how they described the Missouri's 16 inchers during the first Gulf War. "Capable of taking a shell the size of a Volkswagen and dropping it on a tennis court at 25 miles." Not bad when one HC shell would create a crater 50 feet wide and 20 feet deep. There are stories from Vietnam of the U.S.S New Jersey (BB-62) firing a single shell into the jungle to create a helicopter LZ. It's said that it would clear and area 200 yards in diameter and defoliate trees 300 yards beyond that! Are there any South Dakota or Iowa class sailors on here?

Maybe you can replace the word "business" with "private enterprise". I'll speak to this as a small business owner. I'm not in business to "serve the community" or "for the public good". I'm in business to make money and better myself and my family. In an ideal world where the government keeps their hands off of me, then I need to serve a public need well or someone will come along, do it better and replace me. But, at the end of the day, I'm in business to make money. This is exactly the argument the administration used three years ago to nationalize a bunch of banks. That mindset that "we've evolved" cuts both ways. It's really dangerous. I'd spend some time really thinking about that.

This is a great conversation to have, and poses a question people really need to think about. Without private property rights, you have nothing really. Threads like this remind me that America is still a grand experiment, and that we shouldn't take it for granted. We can still screw it up.

Your 2nd Amendment rights are worthless without private property rights. I don't make a habit of calling one right more important than others, but while you may not like it, the ability of that property owner to tell you that you can't bring your gun there is one of the foundational ideas that makes this experiment that we call America unique.

Oh, okay. I guess I didn't read the update the first time through. I had it in my head that they were just asking customers to switch ammo. This still doesn't inspire confidence. Man, I so want to like this pistol, but just can't get past the fact that it's a Kel-Tec. They are such an innovative company. If only they could just let things fully bake before they release them and spend some time on really getting QC issues handled on their line. I don't ever recall seeing a 50gr .22WMR round in a store. I've seen them online, but always backordered. I'd love to find some, though.

When I really studied my options and first set my desk that high, I stepped back and thought, "no way!" Ideally, at a normal, feet shoulder width apart posture, your forearms should rest comfortably flat on the desk, with your elbows at your sides. They build desks a common height so they mate up with other office components, but people aren't all built the same. Everyone needs a height that's right for them. I also actually started going barefoot in the office. I know that not everyone can get away with this, but that's the benefit of owning your own firm. My theory was that we spend all kinds of money putting all kinds of cushions in our shoes when the good Lord put the most elaborate system of bones, muscles and tendons in our whole body right there. I figured that he probably knows better than shoe designers who work for companies that are really more concerned with product cycles and profit than they are about my feet. After a solid year on a hardwood floor, I can report great results. I won't go back. For people who do have to be on their feet, and don't have the luxury of going mostly barefoot, it's definitely worth the money to buy shoes from a company that really does care about people's feet. There's a reason all those nurses and salespeople wear Dansko's. They're ugly, but apparently worth every penny. The right pair of shoes will change your life.

About a year ago I changed my desk at the office to a standing desk. 45 1/4" off the floor. Unless I'm in the field on a case, I'm at a workstation all day. We're not made to sit in chairs all day. I sat in a Herman Miller Aeron chair, and that other really expensive one for two years, but they're just trying to mitigate the damage from doing something that you aren't really made to do for that long. Neither of those $1000 chairs has anything on simply standing up to work, and really concentrating on your posture while you do it.
