In a non-snarky and serious manner, let me say that it does happen quite a bit. It’s a legitimate concern and all of my cop buddies (yes I actually have a few on multiple departments including MPD) say that impersonations are a significant problem in Memphis. From folks being pulled over to home invasions. I literally just asked them to confirm before this post. That said, they all agree that Mulroy is a HUUUUUGE problem.

You’re kidding about the police imposters, right? You’re not actually serious that you’ve not heard any stories of police imposters, are you? The stories are legion and not just in the apocryphal “my cousin’s sister’s uncle’s grandmother had that happen” sense. There are literally page after page of search results of folks being arrested for it nationwide and I remember news stories about it going back to my childhood. It’s the entire reason that there are statutes regarding the kinds and colors of lights on vehicles. Unmarked cars should never be used for traffic stops. As far as the legality/constitutionality of pre-textual stops, I don’t dispute that. I still think it’s a just course of action for the people’s representatives to ban their use like how I don’t support the use of no-knock warrants. Even if something is “technically” ok, doesn’t make it just or right. I also don’t deny that it makes the job of police harder. Then again, I’ve always maintained that it’s supposed to be hard. If it were easy, it’s be an entirely different kind of terrible place to live.

On these subjects, I’m going to have to disagree with you here. The use of unmarked vehicles for traffic enforcement has long been a concern for public safety. Whether it was imposters pulling over folks to rob and or rape folks, or other factors, it has long been a controversial, and in my opinion improper practice. The use of pretextual traffic stops as fishing expeditions because of suspicions of other types of wrongdoing is on the line of running afoul of civil liberty violations. I don’t know about you, but dancing on the line of violating civil liberties of the citizenry is not something I believe a properly functioning, law-enforcement entity should be seeking. Any good officer, or agency should be able to recognize where the line is of rights violations is, be able to point at it and make the statement “it’s waaaaay over there.“

Do you still trust Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham
Chucktshoes replied to Links2k's topic in General Chat
He’s a war tourist. Claims to be fighting in Ukraine, yet is always pictured with the cleanest uniform and kit that don’t have the slightest pinch of salt to them. Never has any spare mags or ammo in any of the pictures he posts. He’s an obvious liar and propaganda mouthpiece playing a role for the cash and creds. -

All of the cable news networks are entertainment outlets aimed at a specific audience biases. None should be trusted at all for any reason. They wish not to disseminate truth or understanding. They simply want to keep your eyeballs glued to their screen and will say whatever it takes to accomplish that. It’s a good thing to understand that they’re all dying businesses.- 101 replies

ad closed Sold: Plate carrier and AR500 Armor set
Chucktshoes replied to FireMedic's topic in Gear Classifieds
Plate carriers are sized by the plate bag size. If those plates fit correctly in the carrier then it’s a medium. A carrier will generally adjust up or down to most sizes and changing the cumberbund will allow you to get to the ends you need to get to. -
Cleaned up thread. GLWS OP.

Ok. I’m a little less confused now. My initial reading based on the summary was absolutely wildly inaccurate. That’s why you shouldn’t listen to me. One thing this bill does appear to fix is the risk of being in violation if you’re in a park or other place and a school group shows up. (8) Persons possessing a handgun, who are authorized to carry the handgun pursuant to § 39-17-1351 or § 39-17-1366, while within or on a public park, natural area, historic park, nature trail, campground, forest, greenway, waterway, or other similar public place;

Thank you for posting the text of the bill. It is very helpful.

This is what was in my mind when typing that.

Hrmmm… before two years ago I would’ve said the BHP. the recent explosion of affordable clones has really changed that though. I strongly suspect this thread will definitely be filled with full sized metal framed offerings though. I’ll be really interested to see what folks come up with not in that category.

I’m already using them. A lot. So it doesn’t faze me.

I really want to take a class from Scott. But I also think that you make a very important point. There’s a lot of ways to skin this cat. It doesn’t mean that some aren’t objectively wrong, but there are more ways than one that are subbjectively,l right.

The federal statutes in the gun free school, zone act prohibit possession of firearms on the property of and surrounding K-12 schools. They provide an exception for people licensed to carry by the state. As it currently reads, the Tennessee code specifically prohibits carry on school grounds with the exception of law enforcement.

It appears to grant cops the ability to have a firearm and have a beer, but also give the regular Joe a lot of stuff. Mostly having to do with removal of certain sensitive place prohibitions. Obviously the details of the bill text make all the difference, but based on the summary, this is my interpretation. Instead of providing a defense for certain places like parks, it removes the prohibition for parks and higher ed facilities. So college campus carry. Also, it changes the text so that K-12 carry is prohibited “except for any person permitted to do so under federal law.” That seems like a backdoor way into allowing K-12 carry by folks with a HCP, but not folks under permitless carry.

When hesitation almost gets you killed
Chucktshoes replied to crc4's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I strongly empathize with the difficulty of the job. At one point in time, I considered moving into law-enforcement as a career, but chose not to upon serious self reflection and the understanding that I would be very ill-suited to the job. In retrospect, I understand that I likely would have ended up making the news in a very terrible way. I do not envy you, but the reality is that walking that fine line and putting yourself at risk in the attempts to de-escalate situations and avoid using lethal force if at all possible is a primary expectation of the job. I am very critical of how we do policing in the United States, because so often officers are not trained and held to an appropriate standard. Those that are able to do the job in the manner in which it should be done, maintained by respect, and have my gratitude for performing a very basic and necessary function required for society. -
