Help! 1873 Springfield Trapdoor
Mike.357 replied to Mark@Sea's topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
Mark,I did a search on Guns America and found this http://www.gunsamerica.com/976994219/Guns/Rifles/Military-Misc-Rifles-US/1903-Springfield-Variants/Spring_field_M_1873_Trapdoor.htm $1799 i believe it is original and it appears to come with accoutriments similar to yours. I am thinking you found a good deal. I also guess the price is way less due to repairs to the stock. -
Doin, you qualify by posting. So if you wanna come on out you are in! Hope to see you there.

Help! 1873 Springfield Trapdoor
Mike.357 replied to Mark@Sea's topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
Mark from what I can find out here in cyberspace that is about half of what you would pay for a new Pedersoli reproduction. I find trapdoors in prices from 1199 to 1499 depending on barrel length and other options I guess. Of course these are NIB prices -
count me out, who would want to hang out with a bunch of gun nuts.

great, now I have to give this up too?

yanno, I have been coughing some nasty stuff up the last day or so. I guess it is tar and such that is starting to free itself up. This morning you'd a thought I had an oyster stuck in my throat and a side order of a half of stick of rotten butter. Yikes it almost scared me. sorry if this post was disgusting.

value would depend on what type of Colt it is. Is it a Navy or Army? How much rust. Actual age Condition of furniture etc... Post a pic or two

Speaking of this topic, not the typo'd topic. Are people of color very active in shooting sports? Not crime mind you but going to the range, punching paper etc? I don't go to public ranges so I really have no idea. I pretty much only see white people in gun shops or at the Gander mtn and Bass Pro Shops.

I have played with guys way worse thamn me and way better than me, it was never a problem either way. So it takes one extra shot or two per hole. If you are playing "ready golf" your extra shot(s) are not noticable really. And I tell you I have played with some pros who are painstakingly slow and deliberate, drove me nuts. One pro I worked with had the nickname "Matrix" because it took him forever to play his shot. Great player though, but the pace drove me nuts.

It doesn't matter what you score really. Any golfer should be able to play in four hours. The difference between 110 and 95 is like next to nothing. The difference between 95 and 80 is night and day. Going low and staying there takes a big investment in time. You do not need big dollar equipment, spend the money playing. I used to play a lot but cannot even remember the last time I played a round. For me it worked out that if I could not play four or five times a week it was pointless as I sucked so bad I could not stand it. I doubt I will play again unless I end up back in the industry, no way am I paying to play four times a week.

dirt track racing is at night because those racing and those attending typically needed to be working during daylight hours, well historically anyway. i did alright with my picks, stewart kind of let me down a little. Might have to move the 07 into the picks rotation, he has been pretty consistent. Of couse the first time I pick him he will dnf.

I vote for Big Eds @ 11 Shoot @ 12:30 but I am open to anything else. Dotsun why don't you bring them Atlantians with you?
-
Where do you get casings for this round?

Mark@sea posted Mark I love them things, have you tried EMF as a supplier? Anyway here is alink to their Sharps rifles http://www.emf-company.com/pedersoli-rifles-carbines.htm High dollar stuff, but I am thinking they are worth every penny. Hopefully the deal you found is a little more affordable. Will the Sharps work with a paper cartridge? Or is is brass only? One other question, will the Sharps shoot smokeless or BP?

Mark I moved this over to the C&R Black Powder board to continue discussion http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/showthread.php?p=85751#post85751

1873 Single Action Army or commonly known as an 1873 SAA. it has a case hardened frame with 5.5 inch barrel. Being a percussion revolver it is a period incorrect reproduction of a Colt SAA. The 1873 was never made originally in this configuration but as a cartridge gun. It is a .44 caliber as it shoots a .454 round ball. I don't understand why it is not considered a .45 but in Black Powder to be a .45 one uses a .457 ball. Anyway the action is really smooth on it and it is a lot of fun to load and shoot. You have to remove the cylinder to load it, and use a loading platform. Most BP revolvers can be loaded with a loading lever that is built into the gun. My favorite is the one on the bottom left. A 1858 Remington. Also in .44 cal and has a steel frame. It is a most stout revolver and is period correct. It can be loaded either by using the loading lever under the barrel or by removing the cylinder and using a loading platform. I also picked up a R and D conversion cylinder so now I can shoot .44 cal in BP or cartridges using .45 Colt cowboy loads. And of course that makes it a cartridge revolver that has no paper trail. you do not fill out a 4473 to buy these things. I have purchased them all mail order.

When did they start running on Saturday night out there? I saw it was on a while ago while playing with the remote. Doubt I will watch it. Gets too hard for an old man to stay up past ten oclock, Some races I might make the effort but out there and all I doubt it. In my race league I took Smoke, little Busch and Johnson, I hope I have a better race than I did last week.

Mark I don't imagine I am giving up on the front stuffers any time soon. I sent 48 rounds downrange yesterday messing around with the 1873. I was trying loads with a new BP substitute I picked up. Finally settled on filling up the cylinders with powder and leave just enough room for a lead ball. Anyway that load seemed to work best, hahaha love the smoke. I would give up a nut to have a Sharps. Some paper cartridges would be the order of the day.

I would enjoy shooting a flinter.
-
I don't think I would want to join any range that would have me as a member.

okay now that is just crazy talk!! You want me to go off the deep end and start shooting up the place tnmale, you can, i just decided to not have the next one. Seemed easy at the moment.

Wow I did not realize there were that many ex smokers here. I figured a few but this is a great find. Kind of like a built in support group. I really think I will beat it. I quit for 3 months about 7 years ago, but I knew It was not going to stick then. I did not want to quit, I kept telling myself how much I liked it and all. This time it is different. I want to quit so much, I hate the smell of it, the burnt freakin hole in my truck seat, empty packs laying around. Pretty much there is not one thing I like about it anymore. I have already noticed having twenty buck in my pocket that was not there before this week. I can take drinking or leave it, not really important to me. I too associate drinking with smoking so I am skipping the drinking anymore. Maybe some day down the road but not anytime soon. Don't need to do something foolish. Wow Phantom, I am glad i made it past the heart attack stage of quitting, that would be a kick in the jewels alright. This is great I tell ya, I appreciate the support!! Now If I fail not only will I not be able to look at myself in the mirror but I will have to face all of you too!

thanks for all the encouragment. I will consider it a major failure in life if I do not kick this stuff. Tobacco ought to be illegal.
