the steel wool is perfect. it does not take much of anything off, rather smooths it.

my Mosin stock was the ugliest I had ever seen. I used 0000 Steel Wool and this stuff called Arrow wood finish. It made the stock look a lot better but did not lose any character.

In my limited experiences I have never heard of a Mosin being out of wack to the point it was unsafe to shoot. Who did you get it from? I have been reading up on Finn rifles and captures lately. Should be a good rifle. Even if numbers don't match, when the parts were married up it would all have been made good then. Put up some pictures.

I have to say I have never heard Makers Mark sweet before , it always struck me as hot and smoky. Beam Black Label has a kind of caramel hint to it, but I would not even call that sweet. Woodford is pretty good.
