Legally you should be fine, but I still think it's lousy choice. Rifles have buttstocks for a very good reason. :pleased: You can legally carry a real rifle in the vehicle... and actual "on-body" carry of even the smallest AR pistol is going to be pretty unwieldy.

The idea that .45ACP JHP incapacitates any more reliably than 9MM+P JHP is highly debatable. The 9mm is the only handgun cartridge that makes any sense for a military sidearm these days. With the .45 you give up capacity and follow-up shot speed, and gain practically nothing.

Switching to a modern 124gr or 147gr 9mm +P JHP would be a fantastic idea that would make tons of sense. So, I'm sure it will never happen.....

I don't do IDPA anymore, so I have no dog in this fight personally, but IMHO, if IDPA won't do the right thing, peer pressure should. This jackalope should be persona non grata at matches. If I were an MD I would never seem to get an entry application from him. If I were an SO I'd have to go to the bathroom if he happened to come up to shoot. And the Area Coordinator needs to be tarred and feathered... publicly. The shooting sports have zero room for crap like that. :2cents:

Lawful rifle carry in a pickup - TN & AL
dcloudy777 replied to SupaRice's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
While you're in TN, you're GTG however you want to carry it. I have a cheap "parts-bin" AR in a rack behind the seats pretty much 24/7. Loaded magazine, empty chamber. (The chamber can legally be loaded as well, but IHMO that's not a great idea for vehicle carry of long guns.... but that's another subject). -
I wonder if 8 .357s would fit in that cylinder? :pleased:

Rise in guns turning fights deadly in Clarksville

Fine... let this progression continue naturally. Fights leading to shootings is ultimately going to lead to very few fights. Problem solved. -
Home Defense Shotgun - What is your take

Sure. The problem is we rarely get to choose the kind of fight we're in. -
Home Defense Shotgun - What is your take
dcloudy777 replied to Pete123's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
JAB, I can't fault any of your arguments. My "easier manual of arms" for the AR-pattern rifle versus the pump shotgun doctrine is based on the new shooter having no prior experience with either gun. Naturally if the shooter does have experience with one or the other, that's going to make a huge difference. I will still assert that if I need to train someone that has never shot (or only shot handguns) to defend themselves with a long gun, I feel as though I can train to "competency" with the autoloading rifle faster than the shotgun. Shotguns can (and absolutely should) be "topped off" whenever the time and ammo is available. The shotgun starts the fight low on ammo... if you aren't actively engaging targets you need to be stuffing shells in the tube. That being said, reloading a tube-fed gun is a pretty "fine motor skill" process. It's not terribly easy to do, and very easy to screw up, especially when trying to go fast, do while moving, do while you're pants-pooping scared, etc. I consider keeping a conventional shotgun loaded during an engagement to be a fairly advanced skill. There also aren't really a lot of "good" ways to carry much extra shotgun ammo. There also aren't a lot of good options for carrying extra shotgun ammo. The sidesaddle works, but is a little slow to reload from, the shells can fall out under recoil (some carriers are better than others), and you still only get 4,6, or maybe 8 more rounds. Picking up a 30 round mag or two and stuffing them in a pocket is light years better. As for being easier to hit with... that's definitely the most arguable of my assertions, but I'll stick by it, particularly for the "new shooter" as discussed above. And like you, I'm basing some of this on my experiences. I've been shooting 3-gun for a long time now, and taken a LOT of shots with both weapons at "in the house" ranges (7 yards and closer). I've missed more of those shots with the shotgun (even using cheap low-recoil birdshot) than I have the rifle. As for stoppages, I hope I didn't help you jinx yourself. But I have experienced them with both auto and pump shotguns and seen them happen quite a bit. They don't happen terribly often, but they do happen, and when they happen they can be a nightmare to get the gun running quickly. The tube-fed mechanism just has too many moving parts for my tastes. Pump guns getting short-stroked is a very, very real occurrence as well, particularly under stress and with less experienced shooters. I write these things as a "converted" shotgun-for-defense guy myself. I was a big time acolyte at the Altar of the Twelve Gauge. Doing some training with shotguns and training with rifles, and then shooting both a LOT in 3-gun matches has absolutely moved my "social" shotgun" down the depth chart. It's still there in the safe, but behind a few rifles now. :2cents: -
Home Defense Shotgun - What is your take
dcloudy777 replied to Pete123's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Well. That covers about 85% or so of operating the weapon right there. Add in that the rifle has less recoil, is easier to reload, easier to hit with, easier to address stoppages... The manual of arms of a shotgun, particularly a pump shotgun, is significantly more complicated, IMHO. -
Well, if the exemption passed then TICS should be doing that many fewer background checks, so it should be a wash. Unless of course, the actual cost to the state is less than $10 per check... in which case I want to see the TBI before the legislature to defend why it costs $10. The background check fee is NOT supposed to be a revenue generator for the state. They didn't pass a $10 state excise tax on firearms, they passed a mechanism to satisfy BATFE background check requirements. If TICS is a "money maker" for the state (and I'm pretty sure it is).... than the people that oversee it need to be held accountable.

Well, first you engage the parking brake....

Incrementalism works. Over the last few years we've made great strides in getting our weapons laws headed in the right direction. If we keep going, constitutional carry might very well happen. TICS exemption for HCP holders should be, IMHO, next on the list for next year.

OP, why are you limiting yourself only to 55gr loads? I'm a big fan of Hornady's 75gr OTM.

If I had to venture a guess I'd say there was some sort of rifling defect at the crown, just far enough from the muzzle that QC didn't see it. Stuff happens.

Trijicon has a pretty stellar rep... I'm betting they take good care of you. Just out of curiosity, what made you go with the dot for a carry gun? I've found that for me, pistol dos are awesome for longer shots and smaller targets, but for close-in stuff (like I worry about shooting with my carry gun), I could never get as fast as I already was with irons.
-
I'll stay tuned to see how BHW handles this. They have a pretty good rep, but I've never had any dealings with them personally.

Given 10 shots, I figure I'd stand about a 50/50 chance of pulling it off with my P7. 2 shots is more than likely going to require more luck than skill. :2cents:

2 shots? On a human head? With a pistol? Your money is safe.

This, boys and girls, is why you develop a good machining infrastructure.... So your army doesn't have to fight with cheap stamped crap like the AK. :yuck:

Finally took my wife to shoot the ar, need some guidance

It should help tremendously. Electronic muffs are awesome, but most don't really have the dB reduction "horsepower" for rifle shooting. Plugs + electronic ears give you the best of both worlds. -

Since 1975, everyone developing service pistols except the Czechs has just been wasting time.

What the 9mm revolver really needs is a shorter cylinder and set-back barrel, to maximize barrel length in the same size envelope. Smith did this a while back with the .45ACP 625-10. Looks funny, but more barrel = more better.

It isn't cheap, especially if once you buy a few inserts, but Infinity makes a trigger with interchangeable inserts. http://www.infinityfirearms.com/1101.php?indx=5
