  1. Thought I'd bring this thread back up, since the match is getting close. Any more news? Who is going? DanO
  2. Yes, that really, really hurts. Ask me how I know. I think I'm going to have my FN lifter welded up by Jeff C. C-Rums while I'm shooting HM this year. His work has apparently saved much blood among seasoned 3-gunners. DanO
  3. Bummer, still no Men's Division. Oh well, I'll still haul out the Heavy Metal gear and at least make a lotta noise. Hope my arm can make it through that many rounds with the pump. DanO
  4. Okay, I just got the go ahead from the MD to offer this so here goes. I've been trying to promote a multigun Production-type division, and I thought the Amateur match would be a perfect fit, since we should have many newer shooters (read: haven't started being gamers yet ), and the prize table is random draw. I'm offering an independent prize (in addition to whatever you get from the actual match prize table) to the top finisher in the AM match that shoots the match with guns that meet the criteria for a proposed Production division. The equipment rules are as follows: (all guns must also conform to match rules) Rifle:Maximum 30-round magazines, iron sights or 1 non-magnified optic (red dot, etc) are allowed. Shotgun:Shotgun must be manually operated (i.e. pump action) Handgun:Handgun must be a "duty-ready" weapon. Guns that are legal in USPSA Production, Single Stack, or Revolver divisions, or IDPA SSP, CDP, SSR, or ESR divisions should be good to go. The only other requirement is that 1.) you send me an email at DCloudy777@aol.com with your name, contact info, and a quick rundown of the guns you're going to use. I'll make a list of the entrants, and the top finisher on the list wins the prize. and 2). All participants must be at least 21 years of age or have a proxy to accept the prize, because the prize of an alcoholic nature. See, I know the true fuel of 3-gun! Here's the good part, I'm bringing a fifth of 12-year old single-malt Scotch, and a 1.75L bottle of Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey (distilled not 20 miles from where I sit). The winner gets his/her choice, unless there are 50 or more entries, in which case I'll gladly hand over both! So there it is... sound like fun? Just drop me an email if you want to sign up or have any questions. See you in August! DanO
  5. Okay, I'll play, my No-Ruger 10/22 TacSol X-ring action, WhistlePig barrel, Kidd trigger, Boyds Evo stock, Weaver scope, YHM Wraith suppressor. Not a squirrel is safe, and the neighbors none the wiser. DanO
  6. You are correct sir. The actual USPSA classifier "El Presidente" (CM 99-11) is to be shot with fully loaded magazines, but with a mandatory reload after the first 6 shots. Pretty much the same result as using 6-round mags, except the slide will not lock back. When used as a training drill, however, it's usually shot with downloaded mags, so as to force the shooter to practice the emergency (empty gun) reload. DanO
  7. Give Conrad Berry a shout at www.gungrips.net He laser etches any image you send him onto Alumagrips or synthetics. Barry's good people, I've ordered a couple of sets from him, he sends you a proof image superimposed on the grip and goes back and forth with you on the artwork until you're satisfied. DanO
  8. To the OP: I'm not sure of TGODavid's intent (didn't read the thread it was pulled from) however; it should be noted that drills like the "El Presidente" are done with magazines purposely downloaded so that the reload is done when the gun is empty. Learning to reload an empty gun as fast as possible is pretty important, whether in the middle of a string of fire or not. In fact, the more targets there are still targets in front of you, the faster you probably ought to get rounds back in the gun. Now, as to the "tactical reload/reload with retention/IPSC drops loaded mags so IDPA doesn't" reload, well, I'll default to the "if you don't have anything nice to say..." rule. DanO
  9. I understand the rationale behind it, and I really don't have a problem with the state checking the backgrounds of permit holders annually, or even more often, provided it's done in a revenue-neutral manner. UPDATE: I found the relevant part of TCA that requires a licensed dealer to go above and beyond BATFE requirements: TCA 39-17-1316 C3. (3) The gun dealer shall request by means designated by the bureau that the Tennessee bureau of investigation conduct a criminal history record check on the purchaser and shall provide the following information to the bureau: (A) The federal firearms license number of the gun dealer; ( The business name of the gun dealer; © The place of transfer; (D) The name of the person making the transfer; (E) The make, model, caliber and manufacturer's number of the firearm being transferred; (F) The name, gender, race, and date of birth of the purchaser; (G) The social security number of the purchaser, if one has been assigned; and (H) The type, issuer and identification number of the identification presented by the purchaser So I guess I dug a little deeper and answered my own question. I think I have dispelled a very commonly-held misconception though: The fact that HCP holders in TN have to go though background checks has nothing to do with our permit vetting process, or any other part of federal law. According to the feds' rules, our HCP's would work in lieu of NICS/TICS checks. Tennessee's own law is the only thing costing HCP holders 10 bucks a pop to transfer guns. DanO
  10. I had always thought that as well, but I can't find any mention of it anywhere in UCA or CFR. DanO
  11. Many states' carry permits allow the holder to be exempt from background checks when purchasing guns. I was under the impression that the TN HCP did not exempt gun purchasers from an NICS/TICS background check because the issuing authority (TN) did not do a background check on permit holders yearly. I looked up the relevant regulation [27 CFR 178.102(d)], and I found only this... (d) Exceptions to NICS check. The provisions of paragraph (a) of this section shall not apply if— (1) The transferee has presented to the licensee a valid permit or license that— (i) Allows the transferee to possess, acquire, or carry a firearm; (ii) Was issued not more than 5 years earlier by the State in which the transfer is to take place; and (iii) The law of the State provides that such a permit or license is to be issued only after an authorized government official has verified that the information available to such official does not indicate that possession of a firearm by the transferee would be in violation of Federal, State, or local law: Provided, That on and after November 30, 1998, the information available to such official includes the NICS; It certainly looks like the TN HCP should qualify... what am I missing? DanO
  12. CED 7000 is the HEAT!!! Very small, rechargeable, and they make really cool add-ons for it like big-board displays. It's just about all you see at the big matches anymore. And it's pretty cheap too. The PACT is nice too, I have one, but I like the little CED timer much better. DanO CED7000 Shot Timer & Accessories
  13. Thanks for the offer, but Slowsure is going, and I'll ride over with him. See you out there! DanO
  14. Anyone coming from my part of the world? I'd like to go, it's a bit far to go solo. DanO
  15. That was definitely a fun day. Very nice job NTPS, a good mix of speed and accuracy. It was certainly humbling... I haven't shot a "pistol only" match in a long time, I'd forgotten how good USPSA shooters are. Thanks for having me. DanO
  16. Who is doing the work for you Mike? I just got mine back from Red Jacket a few weeks ago. DanO
  17. Sounds like fun. Are there divisions and holster rules like USPSA? I might have to make this, I need more rounds downrange before FB3G. DanO
  18. It was a good match... I never would have known it was a first attempt if you hadn't told me, great job. I wish I could have pulled my head out of my butt and shot a little better, but I did learn a few things: Really close clays are way harder to hit than I thought. Not matter how good you've been running the shotgun the last few matches, never say you've been running the shotgun well. There is no such thing as a hand-shaped piece of hard cover on a threat target, no matter how many times I shoot him in the head. Really close targets and .308s don't mix so well... never seen a paper target almost blown over before. Splashed-up swamp water from the top of a rain barrel tastes terrible. I'm sure I learned more, but those are the highlights. Again, a great match, and I look forward to seeing more three gun in Dickson! DanO
  19. Hey Rick... don't worry, we've all done this for the first time before, ask your questions. You'll only look dumb if you don't ask! As for ammo... this match doesn't recognize "power factor" like some do, so the 9mm will give you an advantage in less recoil and more magazine capacity. As for ammo, the cheap stuff is fine. You will need at least 4 shotgun slugs (I'd bring 10 or so, just in case), the rest of the shotgun targets will be engaged with shot... 7.5 and 8 shot seems to be the most popular. Make sure that your shotshells cycle your gun, some autoloaders need heavy loads, some will run anything. Cheap FMJ is fine for the rifle, if you have Russian stuff make sure it isn't steel core (it tears up the steel targets), the easiest way to do that is see if the bullet is attracted by a magnet. Now that all that complicated stuff is out of the way, I'll tell you this. Just show up with what you have. We'll take care of you. I've never seen a shooter at any sort of match turned away because he didn't have the right gear. I don't care if you shoot the whole match with my stuff, if you want to shoot, and demonstrate that you can handle guns safely, we'll make sure you can shoot the match. I promise you'll have fun, and you'll meet some great folks. DanO
  20. Thanks Greg. The divisions are pretty similar to a system that I'm been working on for a couple of weeks now, trying to hammer out the details. It only has 3 divisions, and gives just about anyone the chance to come play and have division-competitive equipment. I'll print out a copy or two and bring them with me for you guys to check out. Later. DanO
  21. Cool... I'll bring the HM stuff and just reload a lot! And with a pump shotgun to boot... I'll have all the excuses I need! Oh yeah, I got outta "the business" awhile back, so no more full-auto toys anymore, sorry RWF. You are more than welcome to borrow my .308 AR, Benelli Nova, and single stack 1911 and shoot in the Men's Division with me! LOL DanO
  22. No Heavy Metal? bummer.... Are you just using IDPA scoring or do all of the reloading and equipment rules apply? I'd love another match before FB3G, but not if I have to use all different gear. Thanks, I'm gonna try to make this. DanO
  23. Those hollow-end roll pin starter punches that Brownell's sell are worth their weight in gold as well. Takes a lot of the $*&(^!! out of roll pins. DanO

    9mm 1911's???

9mm 1911's run much better with ramped barrels. Traditional non-ramped barrel 9mm = magazine finicky, gotta be hand-built gun. Ramped barrel 9mm = much easier to make work gun. I know you said no 2k+ STI's, but how about just a hair over 1k STIs? We have an STI Trojan in 9mm that you might want to take a look at. Single-stack, 5" 9mm, ramped barrel, nice gun, we've got $1049 on it. I really need someone to come in and pick it up so I don't. The new 10-rd 9mm 1911 mags from Wilson and Tripp have really got me thinking about a 9mm 1911. DanO
  25. The BATF&E measures barrel length (to determine legality), by running a dowel rod down the barrel, action closed, until the rod contacts the breech face. They then mark the rod at the end of the muzzle, remove the rod, and measure. Kinda complicated, but that's how they do it. DanO
