A Case for the Full-Size 9mm Handgun
dcloudy777 replied to daddyo's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I shoot full-size guns better at any range, not just long range. -
Defensive shotgun- Do you have one? What do you load it with?
dcloudy777 replied to CQB Elite's topic in Long Guns
If you are going to settle for the shotgun for defensive purposes (the autoloading rifle is a better choice by a fair margin, but that's for another thread), at least use ammunition that is sufficient for the task. No shot smaller than #1 buckshot, or slugs. Learn how your chosen load patterns out of the gun at 3, 7, 10, 15, 20, and 25 yards. Learn the POI for your chosen slug (with your chosen choke tube, if applicable) at 7, 25, 50, and 100 yards. Practice reloading. A lot. The shotgun is always low on ammo... if you aren't actively engaging targets, you should be shoving shells in. -
I really hope they get the bugs worked out, I want one of these guns as a suppressor host. As for online reviews... yeah, it didn't take very long for them to become as useless as the gun magazines. :yuck:

A Case for the Full-Size 9mm Handgun

If I was limited (God forbid) to only one "class" of handgun, it would be the full-size 9mm, without a doubt. If I spent much time in the woods or somewhere big critters live, I might go with .44Mag/Spl wheelguns, but as I'm almost exclusively interested in defense against 2-legged varmints, the service-size 9mm is the king. -
I know everyone is pissed at EW now (and I don't really blame us), but has anyone gone by to see how the ammo is selling at the ridiculous price? The bottom line is, as long as people are buying it at inflated prices, it ain't gonna get any cheaper. A status report would be awesome. A status report that says EW is sitting on 1.9 pallets of .22LR would be even more awesome.

Theoretically, the harder nickel plating decreases shot deformation which should allow for a tighter, more consistent pattern. In the real world, I have no idea if it really works that way. -

My shotguns are pretty far down on the defensive "depth chart" (I greatly prefer rifles for that sort of thing), but I do leave my 14" 870 loaded with Federal 000 buck, mainly because it patterns just beautifully out of that particular gun. 3 slugs and 3 more rounds of 000 on the sidesaddle. -
Remington has promised a threaded barrel version, and I'll more than likely buy the first one I can find.

The main reason why I prefer the plastic mags for "social purposes" is that they might break, but they won't bend. USGI and other metal mags can get bent feed lips, and lay unnoticed in your mag pouch waiting to get you killed one day. :taunt: If the PMag or whatever plastic mag breaks, it just breaks, and it's pretty easy to tell it's broken. Basically if it's intact, it's gonna work. Besides, I've never managed to break one, and I've beat the crap out of quite a few of them.

I haven't changed it, but I have removed/replaced it to paint my stock. It's really easy, just simple hand tools, except for the barrel wrench, which could be improvised out of an allen wrench or big flathead screwdriver if you don't want to buy one (they're only like 15 bucks, but can be hard to find sometimes). The 9mm conversion is (I'm assuming, I've never done it), more involved, because there are more parts involved (magazine block, bolt, etc) but the .300BLK should just be a barrel swap.
-
Go ahead and buy the 5.56 gun, when the .300Blk barrel becomes available it's a really easy barrel swap.

I wish I would have bought a crate or two back about 10 years ago when they were dirt cheap.

Is there anyone in Middle Tennessee that works on Saigas? I have a 12" SBS that just doesn't want to run, and I don't have the time or the AK knowledge to mess with it. Thanks. DanO

Just a question, mainly for the Knife Rights folks: Have there been any studies done on the frequency of types of knives being used in crimes? I'd be willing to bet that the large majority of knife crimes are done with kitchen knives or box cutter/utility type razor knives. It absolutely wouldn't surprise me if there hadn't been a dozen crimes committed with automatic knives in the last 20 years.

I get where you're coming from TJ, but I still don't agree. Compromise is good for keeping incumbents in office, but that's about it. Make our elected officials accountable for stupid decisions, don't let them weasel around them by only voting against the scary parts. That being said, I don't think Sen. Ketron is a lost cause. He's done enough in the Senate to make me believe he's a smart, reasonable guy, he just needs to be educated on this subject, and hear from his constituents.

Let the whole thing die. If it fails it will be brought back up. If part of it passes it might not. Ketron and the other opposition doesn't take as much heat, organizations like Knife Rights don't have as much skin in the game to keep trying. Let me put it to you this way, I personally would much rather have the automatic knife portion of the bill, and don't really care about carrying something over 4". WOuld you be happy if we just got switchblades under 4"?
