Home Defense Shotgun - What is your take
dcloudy777 replied to Pete123's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
An AR15 is a much simpler weapon to "learn" than any shotgun, for a novice or an expert. -
Well, if you ever happen to see a "NO SPEARGUNS ALLOWED" sign on a public range anywhere near here, odds are pretty good that I'm the reason why it was put there. :pleased:

Keep in mind that even something low like a Deltapoint/clone sitting on a saddle mount is going to be a lot higher than a bead or rifle sights. You might need to add some height to your stock to get the cheek weld right.

Okay, I now have video... This is a live-fire training exercise. Secondary target is a human silhouette on the left... so far away you can't even see it but trust me, it's there, and I put a clean double tap on it. The primary target is a large foam monolith... very buoyant, so the kind of thing you're likely to encounter during maritime ops. They're invulnerable when vertical, so they have to be taken down a peg or two before they can be successfully engaged. Watch as this one goes down hard, and the coup de grace doubletap is cleanly administered. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WF6U1LHKY7g

Hmmm... Preloading shotgun tubes (not chambers) saves enough time to be worth doing, provided you have a good table to put the guns on afterwords and enough staff to keep an eye on it. Running a bay with hot pistols? Not even close. You're gonna save what, maybe 15 seconds per shooter, tops? Not worth the risk, IMHO.

Home Defense Shotgun - What is your take
dcloudy777 replied to Pete123's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Modern autoloading rifles are much, much better for this sort of thing, but if you insist on the shotgun (or it's all you have, I've been there), please: Forget about the pistol-grip only guns. Hits stop fights, and at the kind of range you can reliably git hits with a PGO gun, you'd be better off with a bayonet. Seriously. At anything past bad-breath range, PGO shotguns suck. Don't use any shot smaller than #1 buck. Anything smaller CANNOT reliably be counted on to penetrate flesh deeply enough to incapacitate the human attacker. If it won't penetrate drywall, how is supposed to keep someone from killing you? Commit to serious training. The shotgun, especially the pump shotgun is THE HARDEST SMALL ARM WITH WHICH TO LEARN HOW TO EFFECTIVELY FIGHT. Buy cheap birdshot by the case and practice loading, shooting, and loading more. The shotgun starts every fight low on ammo, if you aren't actively engaging targets you should be stuffing shells in. Buy/make dummy shells and practice loading some more. As for which gun... try some and see what you like. The Benelli Nova and 870 are my pumpguns of choice. The offerings from Mossberg, Winchester, probably others are just as good... there's a lot of personal preference involved. Same with pistol grip shoulder stocks. I always recommend the shortest LOP stock you can find... shotgun stocks are almost always too long. If you need extra length, ad a recoil pad like the Limbsaver. -
Too hard to load and cock when underbarrel mounted.... I thought about that route. :pleased:

I did some work on a adding more solidity to the mount. It's pretty sturdy now. Bring it, lake pirates.

Trimmed the pistol grip down this morning.... still a few tweaks away, but I'm on the right track.

They make a lot of different sizes of pneumatic gun, I had no idea. It's a pre-charged, captive piston type system. You just push the spear into the muzzle to "cock" it and it's ready to go. The tank stays pressurized unless you drain it for maintenance, and there's a hand pump included to re-charge it once it's purged. Pretty cool, really....and more powerful than I thought the little pistol version would be. The spear easily penetrates a few layers of sturdy cardboard from 5-7 feet away (haven't tried longer ranges yet, still working inside). I got mine from Amazon... http://www.amazon.com/SEAC-600-Parent-Asso-Pneumatic-Speargun/dp/B00LZTLT6O

Thanks. I do too.... but I don't know why. This is just a "rough draft", so to speak. Now that I have an idea of how everything fits together, the pistol grip on the speargun is going to get shaved off, so the whole thing can get moved back and use the magwell as the speargun grip, like the M203. I also have some ideas to try out for an additional mount on the tube of the speargun itself to make it a little more sturdy. James Bond's got nothing on me.

I have no idea why I did this... but I did it.

There isn't a better "service-sized" handgun in the world.

It's just a training issue. Disengaging a thumb safety is no more a "gross motor skill" than pressing a trigger, drawing from a holster, finding a sight picture, using a magazine release, or a bunch of other stuff you had better be able to do if you want to defend yourself with a gun. I can't even pick up a drill anymore without "thumbing off a safety"...

April Fools: Glock to Announce Premium Line at NRA Convention / Nashville
dcloudy777 replied to Pete123's topic in Handguns
I do like the flat backstrap... it's an improvement over Glock's current shape. :pleased: -
Okay... the G36 is utter garbage. The L85 is slightly better garbage since they were completely rebuilt. The AUG has typical terrible bullpup ergos (as does the Tavor, SAR21, and likely the Chinese gun). The FAL is a .308 select-fire battle rifle, and that entire concept is just dumb. The SCAR and AK5 probably offer the same level of performance as the AR system, but don't offer any significant increase in any useful metric. It's not cool and new anymore, but the M16 family still does the job as well or batter than anything that anyone else issues.
-
The M16A4/M4A1 system is easily a better battlefield performer than any of those, except maybe the Chinese gun... nobody really knows much about it at all.

Trouble timing muzzle brake

Shim sets are cheap, and work well. -
Meh... the short-stroke piston is a step backward. There's not a better system in widespread use today than the M16A4/M4A1 combo.... except maybe the Canadian C7.

Semi Scientific examination of 45 ACp from a pistol caliber carbine
dcloudy777 replied to zgunbear's topic in Long Guns
Every cartridge is going to have a barrel length "sweet spot" at which all of the powder is burned, and no energy is able to be added to the bullet. Any additional barrel length beyond that is actually going to remove energy through friction, and (albeit slightly) decrease velocity. Obviously this length is going to be dictated by many factors... mainly the amount of powder and the burn rate. -
Because pistons belong under the hood, not the handguard. :pleased:

Never heard of these guys, and they're out of stock right now but taking backorders. http://www.buffaloarms.com/8MM_Nambu_Ammunition_it-158148.aspx?TERM=nambu

Tritium sights are available in several colors now. Green is the brightest, but I've seen yellow, red, orange, blue. My current carry gun has a set from Trijicon that uses a green (brightest) front sight, and orange (for contrast) rear. I love them.

I want one... but not that badly. :stunned:
