Blackbirds will eat sunflower seeds. Maybe your starlings haven't needed to so far, but they will. They prefer cracked corn, but if that's not available they'll go for your sunflower seeds.

Avoidance, while not necessary in 'Stand Your Ground' states, and certainly not required for the 'Castle Doctrine', shows that the SD actor did, where safely possible, avoid using SD except as a last resort. That works to the benefit of the SD actor. One fallacy is that there is a "Stand Your Ground" law. Same with the "Castle Doctrine.' There is no such thing as it falls into the category of Self-Defense and merely takes the issue of Avoidance out of the prosecution's playbook in certain states. You are absolutely correct. Statute laws mean almost nothing until a judge(s) gives an interpretation of that statute, then that decision becomes case law. It goes through the process of trial judges, Court of Appeals judges, then the State Supreme Court judges.
