True, but if it weren't exciting, why would we leave a perfectly good woman in a warm bed in the middle of the night to go climb a cold, wet tree and sit there freezing?

The parthenon is a neat sight. The state museum in the James K. Polk building is very interesting as well. I don't think you need to carry in there, however. Fort Nashboro is kind of neat. I like to visit Gruehn Guitars. Opry Mills mall is o.k. for the shopping, as you can kill some time in Gibson's Cafe or Bass Pro Shop while your wife does whatever it is that women do. The Opry is a sight to behold if you've never been. A walk through the Opryland hotel is worth you time too. A cruise and dinner on the General Jackson would be another possibility. I absolutely love the Country Music Hall Of Fame.

The following information is simply based on my 25+ years of screwing up, learning, rinse and repeat. Everyone will have different opinions and experiences.... 1)Time: The more time you can dedicate to observing and hunting deer, the more proficient hunter you'll become. When you see a deer in the woods, you will likely not see the entire deer at first. You'll see a corner of an ear, a tail twitch, or the horizontal line of the back surrounded by vertical tree trunks. Deer camoflauge very well, and only practice will make you better at spotting them. I'd bet more deer walk by most hunters undetected than are seen. 2)Smell: Deer have an acute sense of smell. I have good luck bathing in scent free soap, and washing my clothes in scent free detergent. 3)Be Still: A deer will seldom see you unless you move. They WILL see the slightest movement. 4)Be quiet: Deer rarely run from an unusual sound, but they will curiously seek out the source of the offending noise. At this point you are usually busted. 5)Stay Warm: Walking to your stand can get you sweaty, while sitting still for hours can be much colder than you ever imagined. I often carry a lot of my clothes and put them on when I get where I'm going. 6)Comfort: The more comfortable you are in your stand, the less you will move and the longer you will sit there. See #1 and #3. 7)Lots of people believe you should get in your stand 30 minutes or an hour before daylight. You can't shoot a deer before daylight. You can only sit still for so long. Why not spend that precious time while you can see to shoot a deer if one happens by. I have spent most of my time hunting mornings and evenings, yet have killed most of my deer in the middle of the day. 8)Practice with your weapon. You don't need an expensive rifle or a ultra high power scope. What you do need is a lot of ammo and range time to get familiar with it. However far you can reliably hit a paper plate offhand should be your maximum shooting range for game. It will increase with practice. 9)Don't believe everything people tell you, and don't buy all the scents, calls, super camo, ultra potent magnum rifles with see the world retciles and turrets, etc., people try to sell you. After you clean it and check the barrel for obstructions, I'd put some lead in the air with it. You have a real prize there, even if it wasn't your grandfathers! Congratulations and enjoy it. I'll bet he would have wanted you to.

I'll bet that the tags brings more than 100k!!! More than one wealthy person would love to be the first guy in five generations or more to kill an elk in Tennessee.

Sir, I hope I'm not coming off as a know it all, I just thought of some possibilities and didn't know whether or not you've considered them. I'd like to see you identify the source of the problem so we can all learn from it. Keep us posted and good luck!

The Savages are a 250-300, a 243 Winchester, and a 300 Savage. I think the top one is a 99A, the middle one is a 99F, and I'm not certain of the lower one. It wears a Bausch and Lomb Balvar. I think it is adjustable from 1.5-3x, or something like that. It was one of the first variables. My father built the top two mausers. The top one is a 280 Remington, and will shoot one hole groups at 100 yards. The pretty one is a 257 Roberts. The next one is a 95 Mexican I sporterized for bad weather deer hunting. It has the military 7x57 barrel. I have less than $50 invested in it. The bottom one is a Musketeer chambered for 243 Winchester. It hs the mannlicher style stock.

Another probably obvious question.... Are the bullets round? Could the be an oblong shape caused by something gone wrong in the casting process? A 642 should stabilize a 158 grain bullet.

Another possibility......If you are shooting a paper target with a slow, round nosed bullet, the bullet often tears the paper and could leave the impression of an unstable bullet. They don't cut pretty little round holes like wadcutters. Perhaps you could shoot something more substantial such as a piece of wood or heavy cardboard and see if the holes look different.

I'm finding some pretty good buys on firearms...prices and models I haven't seen for several years. However, I have a friend who runs a gun shop and he says business is very slow lately.

Summit Goliath SS I love my Summit Goliath climbing stand!! It has plenty of room, is very stable and comfortable, and is light enough to comfortably backpack for miles. If somthing ever happens to it, I would definitely buy another.
