We wanted a short trip, so to the internet I went. I found rooms at the Inn at Henry Horton still available, so since we'd never been to Chapel Hill, we decided to give it a try. We had a blast.
There is a pool, nice park with the Duck River running through it, hiking trails, a skeet and trap range as well as a pistol range, an award winning golf course, and a holst of other neat sights and activities. All weekend, there was a park ranger guiding tours and teaching classes on assorted outdoor activities from tree identification, to doll making, to care and firing of a flintlock muzzleloader, to various means of fire starting, to making various primitive weapons. He was awesome. I learned a lot from him, and so did my boys.
The park restuarant featured a very reasonably priced buffet of delicious southern food. Everyone there was very friendly, and the crowd was nearly non existent, especially for a holiday weekend.
I am often down on our government, but I highly recommend a long weekend at one of our beautiful state parks. Best of all, I spent less than $200 for a very enjoyable and memorable weekend for four.
