Amen! You'd be surprised how many people act like I'm an idiot for ownong a decent pair of binoculars. "I just look through my scope!" is the money saving advice I get. Everything doesn't need a loaded high power rifle pointed at it...I know I don't!

I don't know, but I have one ordered. I'm a lefty as well. I understand they range from drop in to a bit of filing/sanding.

Love my Rock Island commander! I've owned a bunch of guns, but for the money, the Rock Island is hard to beat.

I just love big ole N frame Smiths, but I have little desire to carry one all day every day.

I bought a Forschner boning knife from Smoky Mountain Knife Works, mainly because that knife was what I kept seeing in butcher shops. I could not be happier with it! It wasn't very expensive. It takes and holds an edge very well. The handle is comfortable. I believe these are now labeled Victorinox.

One deer will keep me busy for a day or two. I see no reason to shoot three on a single day. I do not begrudge somone else doing it, I'm just too lazy.

How about a web belt and a milsurp flap holster made for a model 1917?

Colt Woodsman, most any High Standard semi auto, Smith and Wesson 41, Smith and wesson model 17. Hammereli makes some nice competition grade 22 target pistols.

Buggered up screwheads and punch marks around pins tell me someone has been inside the gun who shouldn't have. If those giveaways are absent, there's no bulge in the barrel, and the action seems to work correctly, I figure the inside to be in at least as good condition as the outside. One exception would be old police turn ins. Most of them have been carried a lot, so they'll show holster wear, as well as banged up grips, but they are usually like new functionally.

My small 8 year old loves shooting a Marlin 1894 in 44 magnum, as well as an M1 carbine. Heck, everybody loves shooting an m1 carbine. Buying ammo for it is an expensive proposition however.

The only reason I carry a handgun anywhere is because it isn't prudent to carry a rifle in that situation. Having a rifle negates the need for a handgun in my mind.

If I'm out, the wife and kids, and the dog sre out as well, the rest is just stuff. Stuff can be replaced.

You are correct! First aid skills, supplies, and knowledge are very important things to have available. I let that slip my mind when I made the post. I've covered this before, but my point is aimed at the whole "bug out" scenerio that seems to repeatedly come up here. It seems that there are a lot of people who for some reason plan to grab their gun and bag and head out into the wilderness in the event of an emergency. That just isn't a realistic scenerio. I'm not sure what can happen to trigger this, but the people out in the country, at least where I live, will not be happy about "foreigners" camping, hunting, etc. on their property. I do not mean to sound condescending; just realistic.

That would be my choice for carrying. I'd probably be a bit more confident shooting the Savage, however. As for power, think how many deer fall to a bow and arrow each year. Which do you think has more power; a bow, or your 7.62x39. A well placed shot with an expanding bullet will anchor a deer. You are aware it is illegal to hunt deer with full metal jacket ammo, right? Nothing you said made me think you might use it; the thought just came to mind.

When just knocking about in the woods, I can be found carrying one of several rifles, depending on my mood. When I'm serious about deer hunting, I'll have my model 70 Winchester Featherweight in 280 Remington.

Which barrel will be loaded?

You want to hone your survival skills? Make and can a garden. Hunt; kill, process, and eat the food you produce. Go to a gun show with $500 and turn it into $1000 before you leave. When your car breaks down, fix it yourself. Produce something with your own hands and sell it for a profit. These are survival skills; not camping at a park.

Many, MANY ,more guns have been damaged from cleaning than from shooting. Shoot it. When accuracy starts to wane, clean it. Rinse, and repeat.
