They are a sought after gun in original condition. It would really be helpful to see it. From what you've described, I'd guess in the $1500-$3000 range. However, any extra holes, sling swivels, refinishes, etc. will greatly diminish the value.

Condition and being unaltered are two key factors in determining price. How bout some good photos and a little description? Sounds like a very interesting piece.

You shouldn't have any problems taking the gun down and cleaning it yourself. I'm sure there are several youtube videos to walk you through the process. What other work does it need?

I can't think of the last governer I'd trade him for. If you look at the last several we've had, he ain't all that bad.

I'm with you except for the pre 64 Winchesters. They'll win out over the Marlin in every way. In a newer rifle, I'd go with the Marlin.

I'm too lazy to try it myself, so I'll ask. If you take the expander ball/ decapping pin out of the die and size a round of brass, how much will it undersize the neck?

Is the die marked 6.5x55? Sounds like you may have a 257 Roberts or similar die instead.

Usually, the outward condition of a rifle is telling of the inside condition. Look for buggered screw heads, cracked wood, barrel bulges, make sure the action functions correctly, etc. I've seen some with pretty stiff triggers, but than can be improved. For the most part, the Marlins were built like a tank. If it looks to suit you, it'll likely be fine. I am not aware of any specific weak points commonly found in the 36/336 series. Parts are readily available if something did happen to break, but it isn't common for them to have problems not caused by abuse/neglect.

I am not saying there's anything wrong with cast bullets, it just seems that jacketed bullet reloading is a lot more straightforward.

A good teacher is grossly underpaid. They are also quite rare. They will never get the recognition and compensation they deserve as long as they support the teachers' unions, and in turn support poor to mediocre teachers. A couple of years ago my son had a teacher, and after the first few days of school, he cam home and seemed worried. He told me he was afraid he might be smarter than his teacher. After reading a couple of notes she sent home, and a brief conversation with her, I fully agreed with his assessment. How was he supposed to learn anything from her?

I always just stand and stare at people like that as if they have a third eye or something without responding. It makes them very uncomfortable, and rarely does the conversation last very much longer. They certainly don't come back a second time. As you gain a little age and financial security, the same people go from offering unsoliciting advice to prying into your personal business to try and find out why you are more successful and happier than they are. The same response works here as well.

Garufa gave you some sound advice in your other thread. If you're wanting an M1 carbine, shell out the coin and get a decent milsurp. You'll be glad you did. We have several guns, but the M1 Carbines are favorites among my entire family.

I picked up some odd, out of production ammo from a vendor for what seemed like fair prices. Didn't find anything else interesting. I guess the show was o.k., but not as good as some.
