A German Shepherd would be a fine choice. So would a Labrador Retriever. I would recommend a female. Males are usually good with children as well, but a female seems to have that motherly instict to take care of them.   I see no need to have an intelligent dog formally trained. Spend time with it, and it'll try to do what it thinks will please you. It'll likely train you a bit as well.   We have a Lab. He is part of the family. I'm on my on if trouble strikes, but although he's gentle as a lamb, I have no doubt he'd do everything possible to protect my wife and kids.

Get one at least twice the size you really think you need. I have two overflowing and am considering a third. My wife says I need to sell some stuff. :shake: That's just crazy talk!

Why not shoot military surplus ammo?   I imagine the new manufactured commercial ammo is loaded with .308 bullets because, if I'm not mistaken, newly manufactured rifles such as Ruger Mini 30, Interarms Mini Mauser, etc. will have a .308 bore. I don't know how much extra pressure .003" in bullet diameter would cause, but I think it could possible cause a problem.   What I wish is that there was a readily available source for inexpensive brass for this caliber.   I have some Norinco ammo, and thought I've never measured a bullet, I can attest to it's stellar accuracy; at least in an SKS. I don't recall firing any in an AK. Like you said, however, it has gotten expensive enough that I hate to shoot much of what I have left.

If it'll feed into the chamber, I expect the old Star will fire it without incident (reloads of dubious origin notwithstanding).

Is your sizing die adjusted to where it touches the shellholder?   I expect you aren't pushing the shoulders back quite enough when resizing.

I'd start with a defined budget; what kind of money are you willing to pour into this endeavor?

Yes, it is the "Survival and Preparedness" forum. So far, I've managed to survive and am fairly prepared for most likely scenarios which would cause problems. I've found that the location of one's home is of more importance than it being built like a military fort.   I've yet to suffer a "drive by shooting", but have dealt with floods, tornadoes, and ice storms. Sickness or job loss are two of a myriad of likely possibilities one will have to face.   Total societal breakdown makes for entertaining conversation on an internet forum, but honestly, it isn't likely to be the thing you'll need to be prepared for.

I enjoyed the first two, and look forward to the third. I also enjoyed the book. To me, the movies do the book justice; more so than most books I've seen converted to movie.
