So, I was in Kroger this morning (West Knoxville) after church buying some flavored beer for a present for my wife (first, I'm Presbyterian, second my wife likes the girly stuff;)) and the girl who was running the self-checkout asked for my id. I showed her my HCP for ID and she asked how hard it was to get a permit. I was then able to tell her where to go to class and what to expect to get a permit. Turns out her husband had given her a Ruger .380 for Christmas and she wanted to get her permit. Next time I see her I'll find out if she's going forward on getting her permit. Matthew

Schedule of Bills being considered 2/17/10
macville replied to waynesan's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
So what exactly does this mean? Would it allow those of us with HCP's to carry batons without getting a baton permit? Would it allow us to carry knives longer than 4" in places that ban firearms? Matthew -
Why start a whole different system of police that's going to need more computers and people. Why not just hire more officers for the police force and post them in schools? You will save money by not duplicating all the support staff/equipment that it takes to run a LE office. Matthew

"Open" Forum in Memphis - Gun Violence
macville replied to railfancwb's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Last time I checked, we don't have weak laws...we simply have laws that are not enforced against criminals, and when they are, judges/DA's offer stupid plea bargains that only help the criminal. Matthew -
Here's a question... do we really want true "bars" in our state? I would love to see the stats on drunk drivers (caught) and where they came from. I am betting that 75% came from these places that are supposed to be restaurants, but are in reality bars. I have no problems with people drinking (I do so myself), but the amount of people who drink way too much and then drive is astounding. How hard is it to realize if you've had more than 1-2 drinks an hour, your drunk? Matthew

It seems like to me, if you want to have your firearm in your car while on school ground and NOT picking up a student, it would have to be unloaded and the ammo separated. Basically, the same situation as someone who doesn't have a HCP but wants to transport firearms in their cars. Really, if you don't have the ammo near the gun (intent to go armed) then at worse C1 applies. However, I don't know what "possess" means in this case. It could mean simply locked up in your car or both the weapon and the person is in the car. Let's just fix this by eliminating a ban on school carry. The current ban across most of the country doesn't seem to make the schools any safer. BTW, if you B1 you find out that knives up to 4" are legal to carry in schools because you can't be accused of going "armed" since they aren't considered "dangerous" weapons. Matthew

The question is what the word "operate" means in the law. Can you park your car and go inside and still be consider to "operate" the car? I read it two ways... first as someone who is picking up a student and is actively driving the car (not sure about parking for a minute to walk int o pick up your child, etc) and second as an adult who drove the car onto the property (not a student) so they were the "operator." We really need to spend some time cleaning up our laws in this state. Matthew

Well, think about this. Many people have given up on politics because it's not state govs that are most involved in our lives...it's the federal gov! Do you feel, without the help of a huge org, that you can have a voice in washington? I sure don't and that's EXACTLY what the founding fathers didn't want either. Consider the fact that in their day it would take a long journey to even GET to washington, so they didn't want to be ruled by someone thousands of miles away. All they wanted the fed gov to do was protect each state from the other states, and all the states from other countries. Add in the post office and the census and that's all they were supposed to do! You should have to go to Nashville for 99% of the gov that SHOULD be affecting our lives instead of the 99.9% of Washington that's affecting our lives! Matthew

Which is really funny considering that Jackson's bill still allows carry in places that many people consider "bars" (any place that serves liquor.) Matthew

You know, how amazing would it be if they could submit bills that wouldn't be allowed to have amendments added onto them... Matthew

Yes, because he has absolutely no clue what he's talking about. The $60-$80 extra in your paycheck wasn't from the stimulus, it was from the employer simply not withholding as much in taxes from your paycheck. You know what that means? It means that many many people are going to find out when they do their taxes that they owe money when they normally wouldn't have and now don't have the money to pay them. Matthew

15 days from Nashville to Murfreesboro?!?
macville replied to RobD's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Just because they say it was mailed on a certain date doesn't make it so. I mention in another thread here that my wife's HCP was supposedly mailed on Jan 12, but when it got here, it had a postmark of the 19th. Not to mention that it was issued on the 22d of Dec and it took them almost a month to issue and print it before mailing. Matthew -
Those metal signs cost so friggin much you would not believe. That sign probably cost $500+ to have made and installed. It's sickening that they want to "promote" how they are not getting the economy back on track. Matthew

Guns-in-bars law hurts tourism, cities say
macville replied to waynesan's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Are you being sarcastic, mocking the made up "won't release" info that the anti-gun people are saying? Or do you have stats that show tourism went up the year after they passed the law? Matthew -
Corporations Will Choose Leaders Now
macville replied to Oh Shoot's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Let's be honest, can this REALLY make our country ANY worse? We have uneducated voters putting crooks into office, so will it make any difference if corporate America puts someone into office? Matthew -
Yeah, that's incorrect. Bank employees would have to be federal employees for it to even start to be illegal. Matthew

Gubernatorial Candidates positions on guns

I have to slightly disagree with you. Yes, ALOT of teachers suck. But I don't believe they are all bad teachers. Teachers get almost no support from their school administration, none form downtown (at least not here in Knoxville), and not much for parents--even in "rich" schools. When teachers get no support, it's hard to want to fight for the kids because you are getting nailed on all fronts--the administration, parents, and kids. Why would you expect a teacher to do a good job if no one cares about the kids except for them? Teaching is a team sport and we've turned it into gladiator sport. Matthew -
While you probably won't be in a hollywood style bank robbery, you know, guns drawn, you never know. There have been multiple bank robberies here in west knoxville in the past year (including one at one of the SunTrust I use), but they have all, but one, been quiet, note only bank robberies. Heck, I found out that one of my friends from college was the teller at the first downtown Clayton bank robbery last year. All he gave her was a note. So using your gun against a bank robber is very unlikely, but if one was aggressive or it turn into a hostage situation, it'd be nice to have:) BTW, I was very very happy to have a gun on me when I took $20,000+ worth of gold to the bank last year. Talk about being careful! Matthew

You can spend all the money you want at the Pre-K level, and the majority of these kids are still going to be screwed up because there parents aren't there pushing them and they are very unlikely to find teachers later on who are going to push them. It's putting a band-aid on the cut instead of preventing the cut. The problem is....it's almost impossible to reverse the problem unless we take away these welfare programs that enable people who shouldn't be parents to keep being parents (aka: make them realize they need to give their kids up for adoption) or make them realize they shouldn't be having sex in the first place if they don't want kids. 100+ years ago natural selection did it's job and these people just died. Now, those of us who actually want to do something with our lives are being forced to keep those idiots alive. The worse part, is we are spending money on people who had every opportunity (free public school, libraries, job placement help and actual jobs) when there are alot of people out in the world that didn't have any options for any of that we could be helping. If we stopped helping these people they would either finally step up to the plate or natural selection would do it's job (although, I'm guessing 98% would actually just step up.) Matthew -
Is this basically removing the ABC posting requirement? Otherwise, it doesn't make a lot of sense. Matthew

Bingo, and that's what we need to be writing all reps/senators who supported overriding Bredsen's veto. What makes someone who's carrying illegally any safer at wal-mart than at Applebee's or, gasp! one of those ILLEGAL bars? Well, okay, if they are willing to carry illegally, then they probably would drink also....but then you can charge them under intent to go armed AND drinking while carrying a weapon. Now that we actually have a fantastic bill to support, we need to get on horn and let them know they should too. Matthew

Man, it doesn't make any sense how the timeline goes. My wife submitted her form and prints on 11/25. She called two weeks ago and was told it was issued on 12/22 and should be there at any time. She finally called yesterday (we've had issues with our not too bright mailman) and was told it was mailed on the 12th. Well, it came today with postmark date of 12/19! So it's strange why some take longer than others. I submitted for mine on 6/6 and got it on 7/2. Oh nashville, you are strange. Matthew

Working for a company banning weapons on property.
macville replied to Krull's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
You do know that if you have the ammo separate from the gun while in the parking lot, that it's perfectly legal for you have the gun in your car. Heck, technically by TN state law you could open carry an empty gun inside a school--not that I suggest you do that:) Matthew -
Guns-in-bars law hurts tourism, cities say
macville replied to waynesan's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Actually, I got it from handgunlaw.us. I thought MT was off-limits, but it's actually like VA and requires OC, so it's really 41 states. There was a law firm here in TN (I believe helped with the stupid lawsuit that overturned the law) that did the research also (Guns in Bars), but some of their info is wrong. Maine seems to make it illegal if a place is posted and serves alcohol (download this State Police: Licenses & Permits: Weapons Permits & Professional Licensing and search for "liquor" to find the law) and Montana says no CCW in places like alcohol, but says nothing about OCing. So really, the count should be 41 states. The states that currently allow NO carry period where alcohol is served are: LA, NC, ND, NM, OH, SC, TN, IL, & WI. Here are the states that have no state restrictions (although, a few states like CA don't have state preemption) N o Restrictions AL CO CA CT DE HI IA ID IN MA MD ME MN NH NJ NY NV OR PA RI UT VI VT WV And here are the states that you can drink while carrying up to the legal driving limit. AL CO FL ME MI NV OR PA UT VI Amazing that there are *10* states that allow you drink while carrying and hasn't been ONE murder by someone with a permit out at a restaurant or bar! (at least not that the brady campaign has found.) Even states like AL, NV, & UT which are considered "redneck" (especially AL) haven't had any issues with backwater bars and shootings. What the real issue here is is not that permit holders can be trusted, but why are all these places that really are "bars" being allowed stay in business when they DO NOT meet the requirements to have license (I guess many do meet their local beer board requirements though.) Actually 40 states allow carry in at least restaurants, and you'd be surprised at how many not only allow carry anywhere alcohol is served but also allow drinking up to the legal driving limit. I will try and post my findings here once I get my info sorted out. Matthew
