Yes you could. However, ignorance, in this case, has actually worked in our favor. There have been times that I have walked past those signs because they are not legal, and it's not because I am giving them my business (such as visiting someone in the hospital.) Places like that post because they don't want guns, but they are so stupid that they can't even post properly. Just like the Knox County libraries which have posted, but the sign isn't even close to legal. If this passes, it will be a legal posting. My tax money is going toward the library, but I can't use it unless I disarm? Matthew

Because to post properly you have to either find the sign to print out or you have to find some place that has the proper sign to buy. Where as with just the gunbusters sign, all it takes is googling "gunbuster sign" to find a sign or going to Home Depot/Lowes. Here's what's scary. What does "plainly visible" really mean? Does that mean a 2" sticker on the door? Have you seen how much stuff some businesses have on their doors? Any sign required should have the gunbuster signs AND the verbage with a min size of 8.5x11". This isn't like smoking where you know it's illegal in any building open to the public unless it's a 21 and over joint (which has been very clearly marked at every place I've seen.) So can the house strip those amendments out, vote it through, and send it back to the senate? Matthew

Why don't we require background checks to buy alcohol? It seems like anyone with a DUI conviction, domestic violence, drunk assault, or another conviction that proves you'd be dangerous if you have alcohol shouldn't be able to buy any. That logic seems to go for guns, why not alcohol? It seems to kill more every year... Matthew

See, I don't doubt WND over the fact that something like this will get signed. Didn't Obama already talk about enforcing some deal that was signed under Clinton and firearms? However, I think the world might be surprised how some Americans would stand up and fight if things did get pushed too far. I'm either going to fight what's right or end up living in heaven (that sounds better anyway any more.)

Yeah, I just went and had an eye appointment there and didn't realize until we went back later for my wife's appointment that they were posted. Went ahead and got her appointment since it only cost us a dollar. Will be getting glasses at Wal-Mart or some place else now and I guess eye exams too. Too bad since I did like them and their prices are good. Matthew

The anti-gun zealots in Washington D.C. are at it again.

How exactly are they going to ban sales that don't cross state lines and are done by private parties? -
This is exactly how I feel. I am to the point where I rather not get anything passed than a flawed bill that gives us just a little something (which, I believe has a great chance of getting struck down again due to the 50% rule that's based on something already illegal) but takes away a lot. There is far too much that can go wrong with those little signs that could land a law abiding citizen in big doo doo. We now need to push hard for them to pass the other bill or remove the amendments (adopt the house bill I believe.) Let them know that we will not stand for this crap. Trust us entirely (AKA: stop treating us like criminals) or give rid of permits entirely and see how that works for crime. I am sick of these games and people with no back bone. Matthew

Actually, not a stretch at all. There are tons of restaurants like Moe's which sell beer, but you wouldn't know until you got to the little in counter cooler right next to the cash register. How are you supposed to know if they sell when they don't advertise it? How am I supposed to know if it's really a legal sign? Posted signs should be at least letter paper size and include both the state prescribed text AND a gunbuster symbol. Posting should have to be ON any door you walk through to get into a place. I don't know why the republicans don't stand up to these idiots. They could have had this over and done weeks ago and be focusing on more important things. Matthew
-
The worse part is that everyone who voted aye on pushing the bill forward with this crap, except for Jackson, are republicans. I'm hoping that they just didn't understand that they just made things FAR more confusing and also made it possible for a court challenge. Even if Rayburn doesn't sue (yeah, like we trust him at his word), what's to stop someone else from suing? BTW, what's the other bill that's out which is better than this one because it simply deletes the whole part of the law about alcohol carry? Matthew
-
But consider this... how is a business owner more less responsible for safety when it comes to legally carried guns/banning them and say some spilled water on the floor? It just seems like if you take away someone's self-defense tool, then you are taking upon yourself to provide enough security to provide "equal to what they had" defense. I am trying to think of a real example of this kind of thinking with other things, but nothing is coming to mind. Matthew
-
I still don't understand how a property owner can't be held responsible if they ban legally carried weapons weapons and someone gets hurt because they can't defend themselves. It seems like the only way for them to not be held responsible if they have a secure area with metal detectors, therefore showing that they've made efforts to make sure no one is armed. Here's another thought I just had. Can the state constitutionally allow private property owners to "legally" post? They only have the power to regulate carry with a "view to prevent crime." So where do they get the power to let private property owners have power? I don't see private posting preventing crime. Matthew

How about we have the state actually enforce the law! I am sick and tired of places that shouldn't legally have a license continuing to operate basically with the state's "blessing." So here's the bigger question. Would it be illegal to carry in a place that SHOULD be posted, but isn't? And it still doesn't really make clear about places that aren't restaurants (theaters that serve alcohol, etc) Are they supposed to post? If they don't, what happens? We need to make it very clear to the pro carry reps/senators that the original bill was fine just the way it is. Most of those "bars" would probably post anyway, so let them post, and then ones which don't want to won't have to an will get our business. Matthew
-
So basically, it sounds like if a place doesn't post, then it will be allowed carry..no matter what the real % of alcohol served is. I actually do have an issue with having "real" bars here in TN. We have enough issues with DUI, so why are we wanting to encourage it? Seems like these type of places encourage over drinking, and already are breaking two laws by not really being a restaurant and over serving people. Matthew
-
So what exactly did they add? a 50% rule? Isn't that what supposedly got us in trouble the first time? What about carrying in places that aren't restaurants, but have liquor license like "clubs" or civic centers? Matthew

Hypothetical Question- Restaurants and Carrying
macville replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
The problem is you are using the same argument as the anti's are and if you think about it logically, there is no basis. IF HCP's were going to be lax about it, wouldn't they have been during the 4 months it was legal. Not to mention that if they would be willing to break the law in the future, what's stopping them from breaking the law right now? Because I haven't seen any reports EVER from someone with an HCP being caught carrying illegally in a place that serves alcohol or being caught drunk out with a gun. It hasn't happened, and I believe there is very little chance of it happening considering how few permits are revoked each year. Matthew -
I beg to disagree. The idiots will be out spending their money on the 16th instead of voting. We would have only people who truly cared about their country voting. Heck, we might as well do it the day after thanksgiving or after Christmas. We would REALLY get rid of all the losers (they would either be hung over or out shopping:)) Matthew

Can You carry at the Nashville airport?
macville replied to Bloodbought1's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
The funny thing about the law and the airport being properly posted (Knoxville is too) is that I am pretty sure you are actually breaking the law by going past the signs even if you have the handgun/rifle unloaded, in checked baggage. Nothing in the law says that an unloaded gun is okay while loaded guns are banned (see intent to go armed.) It says firearms are banned. So the bright people running our airports are making you commit a criminal act by choosing to check a firearm in your luggage. If I am wrong, please show me how the law would let you legally have a firearm in your checked luggage past a properly posted sign. Matthew -
2009: Nearly half of US households escape fed income tax
macville replied to G27's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Let's just remember that the current income tax really started as a flat tax. And how is that treating us now? We need a system that allows us to speak our mind the next day by stopping spending money. Matthew -
2009: Nearly half of US households escape fed income tax
macville replied to G27's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
See, that's the problem. Every single person in America is actually paying far more in taxes than what their paystub and 1040 shows. There is this thing called a "business tax" that the feds, state and local govs inflict on businesses. The problem with that is businesses don't pay a single penny in tax. All they do is COLLECT the tax from the consumer and pass it on to the respective gov. I'm a small business owner and I simply include all taxes levied on my business in the cost of my product/service. It's that simple. But most Americans don't know that (which is why we always hear "tax businesses!" from them.) The FairTax would eliminate federal business tax and make up for it in the straight tax at the retail level. Right now, it's really a hidden VAT on EVERY item you buy. People are going to start asking questions when they see a 30% exclusive tax on every receipt. Matthew -

macville replied to G27's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
But that's the beauty of the FairTax. Yeah, it won't straight up by law stop the spending. However, I firmly believe that it will by showing people, especially the avg american, how much they ACTUALLY pay in taxes and they will hopefully step up and stop the spending. Knowledge is power and it should give people PLENTY of knowledge when they see $15 tax on a $50 bill. Not to mention that you will be able to speak very loudly by simply not spending any money or by buying items used. Matthew -

macville replied to G27's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Don't think we will actually be paying any in income taxes this year. But we are also building up a small business and are smart in how we pay ourselves to get the lowest taxable amount possible. But let's be honest. Even though many people do not pay "income tax" does not mean they are not paying Federal Taxes. Every time you buy something in the store, about 20% of the item's cost is embedded business taxes. So take your visa bills from last year and figure up what 20% of what you spent on that is... I've spent something like $20k in hidden taxes over the past two years that could have been spent much better on my business thank giving it to the idiots in washington. Matthew -
I want to note that while this story does seem really odd (like the Knoxville newspaper has ever gotten the full story of any story...) Campfield is a very good supporter of gun laws. In fact, he is the ONLY state rep/senator who showed up to help fight the City of Knoxville about carrying in the parks. Edit: After I wrote this I went to check his blog to see if he had posted anything about it. He had. The newspaper once again is showing it's highly liberal bias I believe. Read his account: http://lastcar.blogspot.com/2010/04/this-is-huge.html Matthew
