I try to buy a few boxes of the weird/less common calibers when I go to gun shows. This makes it easier to get a bulk order done with everything else I need. Ammoseek, F/CF shipping filter, brass only. Sometimes I check places I've ordered from before like Wild Horse or AE Ammo, although I think both charge sales tax now.

Like others have said, knowing your purpose would make it easier to give a recommendation. You have several "generic" AR-15s. Are you looking for just a factory rifle that'll handle whatever you throw at it that you could trust for long term SHTF? BCM, although there's an argument that you could just get a BCM upper and a quality spare LPK. Are you looking for better accuracy? A drop in trigger or better quality barrel in an upper could be all you need. Want to shed weight? Change stock/handguard, or swap to a lighter profile barrel (which has its own pros and cons). Want a standard expensive AR-15 that'll blow you away in comparison to a PSA/S&W/Anderson/IWI/similar? I think you'd be disappointed. You'd likely need to go less standard to have that wow factor, such as going for a specific build like the WWSD project gun or a different platform altogether like the Hellion, but I'd still temper expectations in terms of performance. As far as battle rifles go, most have trade-offs. I think the Ruger SFAR is what I would get due to the weight, price, and good reviews. 308 is still an excellent caliber, widely available with a variety of bullets.

I'll believe it when I see it, but that would be nice.

From what I've heard any of them are excellent. I've personally only shot the Shield Plus and it's also easy to find holsters for. I do have to point out the TP9 is closer in size to the C75B Compact, and is thicker. Might not be ideal if you are having trouble with the CZ75B Compact already. The other two are closer in size to your Walther. If you can try them as rentals at a range first, I'd recommend that before making a purchase. Also take a look if your preferred holster brand/style is available for either. If you aren't carrying at all right now the Walther would be better than nothing even if it's not ideal. Federal Punch if it runs reliably in your gun performs surprisingly well for 22lr. -

Some 22s preferring certain brands means less failures, haha! For a second I thought you had trouble with some brands and thought something was wrong. Aguilas's been great stuff for me and very cheap sometimes. Give the 38gr HP a try if you see any. Glad to hear you are enjoying the TX22, I love mine. Sometimes Taurus will run a sale for 6 mags and a mag pouch for $99, something to keep an eye out for.

I've never been to such an event. Following the thread just in case.

My most recent order was from Wild Horse- I've ordered from them a couple times now without issue. My last order I even got a couple surplus Yugo ammo crates for dirt cheap.

Check out Steve's Rimfire if you are ever in Clarksville on a Saturday. Picked up some Barnaul 223 for about 40cpr last time I was there. I think he had some brass case for decent prices too but don't recall off the top of my head. Online I basically use anyone cheap who can qualify for free shipping. Ammoseek filters F/CF, new ammo only, and ignore any seller with a low star rating. I prefer to buy local when I can get good prices though, especially weird calibers people don't stock like 7.62x38r. That way I can keep online orders to as few calibers as possible. If you frequent gun shows look for Shadowsmith Ammo if you need stuff like that, they usually have a very wide variety at average or better prices.

Oh my. I don't know how I haven't seen these before... Now I really want one. It's certainly an easier to swallow price than a WW1 M1911.
-
I'm surprised that German stuff shoots that good. Most of the listings I've seen for it seems to imply it's been poorly kept and for collecting only. 8mm Mauser and 308 have extremely similar drop at 400 yards so I'd imagine the BDC reticle works great. I've never even looked through a LER scope so I'm interested how you like it after getting used to it.
-
Definitely a WW1 Mauser 98 that was reworked in 1920. Provenance after is harder to trace, especially since the barrel and stock aren't original. You'd likely want to check under the barrel (after removing the stock) if there's any other markings to figure out more about who did the sporterization or when, but it's hard to say. Lots of these were converted for civilian use in the interwar period, and eventually made their way to the US where they were further sporterized. Some stayed in military or police service. No way to tell for certain. It's a very pretty rifle and has some neat history behind it. I bet it would be a great shooter, .270 remains an absolutely fantastic cartridge and a decently cared for 98 action should be smooth and reliable.

Any markings underneath the scope mount? It looks like a Mauser 98, not a VZ24. Should be some more markings under the front of the scope mount if they weren't removed when the rifle was sporterized.

My power has been restored! No Internet yet but I'll take my house not freezing. It's been a crazy few days. If anyone needs help, Northeast High School has tons of supplies. The community has been amazing with donations and assistance.

I'm lucky to have no damage, besides my car tire picking up a screw. If any fellow members in Clarksville need anything, let me know.

Unfortunately williamv's safe won't work out for me but I appreciate the heads up. I've been browsing around the used sites but haven't found much. I'm keeping an eye out but might end up having to order one shipped. Home Depot seems to have free shipping on some not too heavily marked up options, but their shipping makes me leery after some prior bad experience.

@10-RingYeah, that's what I've been thinking. Break in risk is already low in my neighborhood and frankly my collection isn't exactly high dollar. Maybe by the time I look at another safe years down the line that risk analysis will change. @pop pop I've been looking at a safe almost exactly like that. Only difference being I'd need it to be delivered- I could maybe borrow a truck, but don't have a trailer nor do I think I could haul it alone. I might check out Parker's Safes before I make a purchase. Thanks for the replies y'all.

I've been looking for a safe since I need more storage space and it seems like a great time to get one with the sales tax being waived and all. I can't afford a proper one like from AmSec, unfortunately; nor can I haul a safe myself. It would be going in the garage, so hopefully it would be well sealed enough for a small dehumidifier solution to keep it rust free. I've been looking around but it feels like everything I could get is the same 14ish gauge steel around fire board construction, with an e-lock of debatable quality and sometimes backup physical keys. So my question is, is a cheap "safe" like that worth the almost $1k cost? Are there any brands or retailers you'd recommend over others based on ease of bulk shipping or customer service? Or is there a used safe shop or something I should look at instead?

Looks like I'm not alone bringing my TX22 to every range trip. Super fun gun, reliable and cheap to shoot.

A beautiful piece despite the refinish. A dream gun for a collector like me, alas I can't. GLWS, I'm sure it'll go quick.

If you find .223 underpowered, you could always look into cartridges like 6.5 Grendel. Quite a few cartridge options for ARs, and swapping is pretty quick (upper, sometimes bolt and magazine). Ammo can get expensive and hard to find though. If ya like wood, I've seen some lovely wooden furniture around for ARs. Best of luck with the trainings, weather looks like it should be quite nice this weekend.

.223 Win chamber can only fire .223, .223 Wylde and 5.56 can fire both just fine. There's a couple schools of thought for bullet selection too, even for self defense. Note that most 5.56/223 bullets will very easily pass through multiple interior walls with little issue. Overpenetration has been a hot topic for ages. Some Hornady TAP rounds for law enforcement use a VMax bullet extremely similar to the one used for varmint hunting in order to assuage such concerns. Others use heavier bullets more regard to balanced terminal performance, like 77gr Sierra Matchking bullets (ie, IMI Razorcore ammo) or 62gr bonded soft points (like the Fusions in the Federal MSR ammo you got). Another idea is to use what you train with and since M193 and M855 are readily available and proven, just stack those. I think the Fusion ammo you got is a good multipurpose round. With prices still stupid and stock levels changing by the day due to recent events and false rumors, having ammo in hand at all seems like a win. Springfield seems to have a rebate going on for some extra gear. Might be worth looking into. https://www.springfield-armory.com/gear-up-2023-saint-hellion/

I remember hearing stuff about the early batches (and saw some review videos that at times had some strange issues; don't recall any followups after though). Overall I'm in agreement with leroy. SFAR feels great in the hand and Ruger has a good track record of customer service. The SFAR's on my very short list of "battle rifles" I'm interested in.
